Beside the excellent location, not too many good things about the hotel. Old and dirty, very noisy, very thin walls. Main building of the hotel is in revamping since few years as I understood. Only an annex of the hotel is functional.

The room is got was a special deal for about 60 euros a night. It said i d be staying at donghu guest house but i guess its the same as the donghu hotel. Clean , simple room. Definitely worth the price. Moreover it's in a bice area on a street with several cool bars and the very trendy Le... More

The hotel is located in a distinctive district and is surrounded by a lot of nice restaurants and pubs and it is only 5 minutes walking far from the nearest subway station. The room looked a little bit worn out even if it was clean enough. The bed was uncomfortable as the mattress was hard like a stone. Good free... More

Looking for an authentic Shanghai experience but with the addition of young hip expats living the foreign dream then the Donghu and this part of Shanghai could be for you. The hotel is in what used to be the French Concession and so the area has a historical feel. It's quite close the the Bund which if you go to... More

This hotel is perfectly located with lots of restaurants, bars and shopping within walking distance. Good (chinese) standard, clean but a bit worn out. Everything works, even WiFi. Do not forget to hang out the "Do not disturb" sign on your door handle if you want to sleep longer. The room maid knocks very light before they enter. Overall a... More

Horrible room! Funny smell, thin wore out carpet! The indoor pool next door is 5 metres deep. This is the only thing I like about the hotel. My mom said the pool was belongs to someone famous in 1930's and it was one of his courtyards. He must be a very fashionable guy then!

Located off a main street, one block from a lovely park, near the metro, walking distance from streets with local night life, this hotel is in an ideal spot to experience the Former French Concession neighborhood and to explore the city. The room was very good for China and just ok by Western standards. Based on other reviewers comments, I... More

I'm a bit surprised by some of the negative reviews I've read about this hotel. OK, its not the Hilton but it was clean, well serviced and comfortable. Breakfast was a good mix of western and Chinese food, and their is a good all day coffee bar. Evening meals are not so great but many nice restaurants are nearby. The... More

Bad smells, loud neighbors, wall papers falling off the wall. Dealers at the entrance door. Cleanliness is so so in local terms. I would highly recommend to look for a better option as long as the main building is closed for repairs. If no options are available, bring ear and nose plugs.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
