The property was recently renovated & this was evident after looking at some of the common areas (that werent renovated) like the baggage storage area. I was staying in a deluxe room that masqueraded as a suite with a TV dividing the room into two. This was really only one room. The location of the hotel is very convenient close...

I stayed for one night only, chking-in on 30 Sep and chking-out on 01 Oct. This is my 2nd visit to this hotel after Shanghai World Expo in July 2010. If it wasn't for the convenience of its location and very close proximity to my relatives house near the University hospital~I would definitely be staying elsewhere. The chk-in lobby is...

The room was clean. The hotel staff speaks English well enough to communicate if you don't speak Mandarin. The food was decent. The air conditioner in the room was too weak, and the A/C in the conference room was absolutely horrible. Be sure to bring a computer that has an ethernet port if you want to access the internet in...

This is a hotel which tries hard to be a first rate international hotel but which ultimately falls short. Bring a computer whch has an Ethernet port if you plan to use the Internet in your room (thank you earlier reviewers for pointing that out). The room was up to business travel standards, nothing wrong there. If visiting for a...

Entrance and accuiel makes impression like you are in a lux hotel but it's not. You could find a dust on TV and holes in towels. They speak English in a hotel. You have wired Internet which was working rather fine. Few minutes walking to subway station line 9, few steps away from typical chinese street with cheap "restaurants". Breakfast...

A hotel past its best. The rooms are a reasonable size, but the decorations are tired (scuffed wallpaper) and the bathrooms dingy. The carpets were grubby. However, the towels and linen were clean and housekeeping was attentive. Hard mattresses! The breakfast was extensive, but not exciting, the lunch and dinner are best avoided (a rather basic buffet which looked more...

I have stayed here several times, and have a VIP rate of about 500Y for a small junior suite. There is a small sitting room with desk, tea service, chairs, and then a queen-bed room with tv and adjacent bath. The bath, although nice, cannot accommodate two persons at the same time, unless one is in the shower. This is...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
