The hotel was clean, modern, and set up for foreign (USA) visitors. The service at the front desk was excellent. The night shift helped me one night with some computer problems - even texting a friend, who came and helped out!! I couldn't have thanked them enough - they were not only helpful but gracious and patient the whole time...

I stayed here for 5 days during the bulk of my trip in Shanghai and this hotel was definitely the best choice amongst the others around the South Shanxi Station area. The atmosphere of the hotel grounds is peaceful and relaxing. The hotel lobby is non-smoking and despite staying in a smoking room. There was no lingering smell in the...

Not suitable for business traveler -- poor internet connect, no business office, printing, or willingness to accomodate travellers' needs in this regard. Hallways smell.... like smoke and a badly managed septic system. Breakfasts are not at all interesting. Bland, tasteless food. Too expensive for what they are offering (compared to other nearby hotels).

As a frequent visitor to Shanghai, I decided to try a different hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Nanjing Road. I found the Fenyang Garden Hotel to be a very pleasant change. The hotel offers large, nicely furnished rooms in a beautiful garden setting. The hotel was built in the 1930's with Spanish design and has been renovated...

I've been coming to Shanghai on business a couple of times a year since 2008. This is my new favorite, clean, comfortable great staff and great location. I won't look for anyplace else. I was very happy with this hotel and the help from the staff when I needed to host a business meeting. Located in the heart of the...

What takes for a hotel to be called a boutique hotel? I would not call the Fenyang Garden a "boutique hotel". Nevertheless it is a nice hotel in an old Spanish villa. It is somewhow refreshing from the high buildings that are typical for many hotels in Shanghai. Our room was on the second floor. It was clean and large....

A true gem - excellent location and sparkling clean. Rooms are quite luxurious with very comfortable beds and elegant linens. We were in Shanghai over Chinese New Year so all local restaurants were closed. Found the hotel breakfast quite tasteful and adequate. Front desk staff very helpful but they do need more english. Finding the train booking office (which is...

The gates open, you drive in, it's part Sunset Boulevard, part hacienda 30's Shanghai villa (sadly the best building is not the hotel!) ...then you arrive at an imposing but aloof reworking of a luxury hotel part Chinese corporate meets Ming dynasty! Room was spacious, but breakfast meagre. (Chinese food far better than Western). Good but wouldn't stay there again...

We had a room with 2 double beds for my wife and I and our 2 kids. The room was spacious and it was comfortable for the 4 of us. The building was stylish and very clean. And the hotel was in a great location for the shops and restaurants of the French Concession. The hotel had no facilities however...

We were so excited on our arrival in Shanghai to be staying in an old property in the French quarter, the reviews had been good and so we were expecting good things..... What we got.... Lied to by an unwelcoming pair at reception....." Yes these rooms are non-smoking" as they quickly removed ashtrays... " this whole floor is no -smoking"-...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
