This hotel is on the grounds of what was once the Shanghai Customs College. It is a beautiful, tastefully done hotel. Absolutely quiet, surrounded by lush gardens with palms and flowers. The room was pristine, peaceful and very nicely appointed. Included with our room was a morning breakfast buffet which was superb. Highly, highly recommend and can't wait to come...

Fenyang is beautiful, rooms are spacious, you can often hear music playing from the conservatory next door. I tried to get involved with the hotel by exploring its facilities starting off with the buffet at 98RMB take that money and search for something elsewhere. The service is good however staff will find it useful and convenient to speak English, it...

We chose to stay in the French concession as we were told this area was quieter with beautiful streets and nice bars and coffee shops. This is definitely what we got. We really enjoyed exploring the area around the hotel and found lots of nice places to eat and drink. The hotel itself was ideal for us as it had...

I have stayed a few times on business trips. The hotel is indeed in a nice garden and a great area, walking distance from the shopping district. Rooms are just average, with a super slow wifi (when it works). Breakfast and dinner are also just average. I would suggest it for business trips.

I stayed at the Fenyang for 2 weeks while working in the neighborhood. After reading some reviews on TripAdvisor, I was glad to find that the wifi hookup is now available in the room, and it worked pretty well. I don't know if it was free, as my room was paid for by the company. I had a balcony room...

This is a nice boutique hotel located in a suburb of Shanghai. Not really close to shopping and all, but right across the street from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Rooms are clean and well appointed, though my deadbolt jammed and I couldn't open the door in the morning. Had to MacGyver my way out. Buffet breakfast is classic Chinese...

If you want large rooms then stay here. Heaps of space. We travelled with our 2 teenagers and they had their own room - close by. This may have a western look but it is really target at travel by locals (very limited English). That was okay for us but just in case. The grounds were lovely and opposite the...

Excellent hotel, rooms big and very nice beds. Didnt dine in; the gardens great to walk around in. Excellent location no noise from main road. Internet could do with a little upgrade could only get it in the lobby. All in all if im ever back that way will be checking in again.

Our 8 day stay at this hotel was everything we could have wished, with only one sour note: the overall general failure to do proper cleaning. While daily attention was paid, the dirt balls lingered in the corners nonetheless, both in the hallways and in the room. Seemingly there is no management supervision or inspection of the cleaning - vacuuming...

This hotel far exceeded our expectations. The Room was spacious and clean. The Beds were comfortable. The bathroom and appointments were clean and felt luxurious. They seemed to think of everything you might possibly need and it was already there in the room at your disposal... Including an umbrella which I didn't realize I would need.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
