The good news is that the rooms are suites and spacious and the location, on Hengshan Road, is both a great location and a very nice setting. It is a short walk to several metro lines and Hengshan Road has wide tree-lined sidewalks. There are a number of good restaurants close at hand. The hotel itself is quirky to say... More

We stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed the room and service. The location is good for those who don't like crowded area. We just notice we might left our bookmarks souvenir for our kids in the hotel which might be slipped in the sofa. Hope the hotel staff could find them.

I stayed here with my husband in September and the hotel is located in the former French concession. We stayed for 13 nights to visit our son who is working in Shanghai. The hotel is very unique and has lovely Art Deco features. The location is great, loads of bars and restaurants nearby, and there is a lovely park just... More

Stayed for one night on a last minute booking. The hotel is in a good location and just a minute's walk to the metro. I booked an Art Deco suite. Reception were friendly and quickly processed me on arrival. The room was surprisingly large, although a little on the 'dark' side given the dark timber used for all aspects of... More

I mainly chose the hotel because of its practical location for my purposes. The location turned out to be practical, too. And, the neighbourhood, with the close-by park, further increased the value of the location. The hotel in itself is a real gem. We had a large and artistic room with a real working desk, which I needed, and a... More

Firstly, this place is not difficult to find since it is next to Xujiahui and Hengshan Park. I was given the room just above the Keven Cafe. The street is busy and there is constant honking. Not loud or intrusive since the windows are closed. You can see people walk by on the sidewalk and the room gives you the... More

I stayed in a "Gallery Grand Suite" at the hotel and the room was very spacious and comfortable. The building was originally an old art deco apartment block and is very characterful. Located in a quiet part of the former French concession area, it is just a short walk away from the metro station and close to a few shops... More

We went to Gallery Suites Hotel for few nights with my girlfriend. It was a perfect stay for visiting the city. The location was great, few minutes to the metro so really near the center. Let me say from the beginning, this hotel is a nice hotel that is in a nice area. But I'm not so sure I would be rushing back to it. There is nothing wrong with the hotel itself. Sure, the passageways are dark and the lift is old, but the rooms are large, well lit, air conditioned and most of... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
