I reached out to make my booking only less than a week prior my stay and Peter was extremely accommodating. Chai Living tended to special requests I've made (e.g. asking for an iron for the room and requesting a beautiful view) and also ensured there was a personal touch during the stay. They left a letter with all the information...

We have been several times in contact with Peter before coming there and Peter was always helpful. Our internal flight has been delayed of several hours and Kare has been so kind until we got there at 4:40 am in the morning. We discovered a fantastic view over the city from our apartment which was located at the 8th floor....

Chai Living was awesome. The location of the building is very convenient, is at a walking distance to the Bund. The staff is excellent, always willing to help out, very friendly! And the apartment was luxurious, the view of the bund was breathtaking, and it feels like home!! We learned a lot while staying at CHAI living, and it was...

This art deco building will take you by surprise. Loving and artistically done apartments keeping a very modern and contemporary interior look with all the mod cons you would need. Love the view from the windows of Shanghai. Unfortunately only for stays longer than 3 nights but the best way to experience Shanghai. Read more on A Luxury Travel Blog.

Top location, magnificent view of Shanghai's skyline, 5-star service. Interesting experience living in an iconic 90 year old building. The studio is nicely designed and furnished with antiques and art pieces.

For more details, please refer to my earlier reviews. This was our 3d stay at the Chai and we don't plan on staying anywhere else on our next trip to Shanghai. After an interlude in the spacious "Cocoon", we went back into "Rice Paper" again this time and loved it. This apartment is a bit smaller than the others, but...

I have stayed at multiple rental apartments in Shanghai now. Without a doubt, I can say CHAI Living is the best experience. From the super helpful property manager (Kudos to Peter), to friendly staffs; from the gorgeous concierge to my spacious apartment with a great view of the bund; everything is perfect. I'd love to stay with it soon in...

Amazing service, nice and cozy apartments in one of the best locations in the city. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for both short and long term stays. Chai even has a deal with a nice gym close by, so it is convenient for those who want to work out during their trip.

Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
CHAI Living is a collection of serviced residences instead of a traditional hotel, with the combination of design gallery, art gallery and events staging. Uniquely situated within an Art Deco landmark now home to many local Shanghainese, CHAI Living offers a different perspective to Shanghai and a rare window into vast-vanishing traditional ways of life. The CHAI Living Residences are all conceptually designed apartments within the Embankment Building, offering the comforts of modern life to guests with a taste for style and sophistication. As an alternative to a five-star hotel, CHAI Living strives to offer a friendly, "family-style" approach to staying in Shanghai. We provide housekeeping and concierge services, with a member of staff on site at all times to provide 24-hour assistance. ... more   less
