We stayed at the Horizon hotel in the 1st week in November during Diwali. We booked at the last minute through lastminute with the spice route as our tour rep. The hotel has been recently renovated, all very clean and tidy. We can not fault hotel staff for their friendly nature, warm welcome and effeciency at dealing with any problems or questions we had.
Hotel is basic but caters for everything we required. Clean swimming pool, rooms cleaned daily and new towels brought. Food needs to be worked on a liitle. Not a lot of variety at Breakfast and the mini bar in the rooms although very cheap is rather confusing! We were brought a box of 12 Kingfisher beers one day!
Hotel is only 10-15 minutes walk from beach, just off main road of calangute, actually quite quiet considering location. Good nightly pool entertainment.
In all we had an excellent holiday, and definately recommend this friendly hotel to anyone visitng calangute!

Have just come back from Horizon Hotel. Excellent time, and agree the staff, everyone from baggage men to waiters were the nicest people. Two things to be aware of though. Beds are as hard as rock, but you do get used to it. Also, we bought a safe deposit box in the hotel, which is housed in a room off the lobby. On one occasion we left some rupees under a camera and locked it. When we went back next day we could not find the rupees, but we just thought we had spent/put money elsewhere. On the day before going, I left my purse with sterling in the safe, and I know it was there because two of us went through the money. The next day the sterling had gone. I think someone is going along the lines of if they take all the money they will be rumbled, but take bits and you just think you have been forgetful. We did raise it with Manager, who said it was the first time it had ever happened. Personally, I can't see any of the staff doing this, so just watch out and keep a track of your money.

It pains to write this review as we have been guests at this hotel since it opened it’s doors over 20 years ago. Although we had a “different” but enjoyable stay in 2019 hotel standards have plummeted since being taken over by OYO. During our visit this year (2020) we were told to bring in our own drinks & food because the bar & restaurant have been closed down. The pool is surrounded by badly broken unusable sun-beds, the patio area had a few old tables with food & bottle debris, the jewellery & tailor shops have been vacated, & the whole guest area was filthy. We were stunned at how far the standards had sunken. Very sad indeed.

Does not even deserve a single star. Forgot about any facilities. Most of the time no electricity. Staff behaviour is extremely rude and unhelpful. Never had such a poor experience.
P.S. Family persons don't think to come. People are drinking and shouting over the poor. Wrost ambience.

I have stayed at the Horizon hotel six times now and many have my friends have gone back to this hotel year after year. The rooms are basic as are all in Goa but very very clean. The pool area is spotless. But more important the staff are very very friendly - for those that say different try talking to them as a human instead of a waiter or a room boy they are very very helpfull and very amusing. from the room boys to the receptionist to the bar and waiting staff you cannot fault any of them. Give this hotel a try you wont regret it. If you someone who is reading this that has not been to india before North Goa is more traditional dont expect 5 star hotels they are all of similar standard. You need to stay in a Marriot hotel in south goa if thats what your looking for. If you want basic clean accomodation set in traditional surroundings then North Goa is the place. Have a fantastic time..........................

I have just returned on from a wonderful stay at the Horizon but one thing marred the end of my holiday. The discovery that my camera had been stolen from my rucksack whilst being taken down to reception or whilst in the drivers compartment on the airport transport bus. It was the only time that the rucksack was out of my sight. It was such a shame as the hotel staff and those who worked on behalf of the tour operator were very friendly and extremely helpful.

My advice to any tourists though is of course be relaxed and enjoy your holiday but also be cautious at the same time.

My wife and i have just returned from a two week stay at the Horizon hotel in Calungute,

After reading all the positive reviews i thought this would be a fantastic hotel, I have to say overal I was a little dissapointed.I will outline the pros and cons and hopefully give a fair and balanced view.

Pros,
Friendly staff.
Great location (in the heart of calungute)
TV that works.
Safety deposit box and 24hour security.
Safe to leave belongings (we left our room for 6 days to travel south india)
Large rooms.
Lots of people return year after year.
Balcony.
Fridge in room and staff don't seem to mind storing own drinks in there.

Cons,
Small,cold pool(virtually unused)
Cleanliness of rooms, towels, sheets are at best average( taking into account the 'we are in India factor') had to ask to change rooms on arrival, second room was better however not great.
Breakfast is average with no Indian dishes on offer (Dosas, idli etc)
Air conditioning is ancient and needs replacing ( too noisy to have on at night)
Water is brown when you turn taps on.
Approach road/alley is unlit.

Overall I was satisfied with this hotel, however I think it should be classed as a 2*, we paid an additional £200 to stay in the horizon as it was 3* and on reflection there are 2* hotels in calungute of equal standards.

Hopefully I have provided a balnced review, if anyone requires further info, please contact me via the calungute forums.

The Horizon Hotel is set in the heart of Calangute, 5 mins walk from the beach and 3 mins walk to the road which links Calangute to Baga, where you will find every restaurant imaginable. Upon arrival it is easy to be intimidated by the hustle of the busy street and the short dark dirt track which leads to the Hotel although you soon realise that it is very safe. There are cabs outside the hotel at all times, all the drivers are really friendly. The staff at the Horizon are the nicest you will ever meet. Rooms are cleaned daily and the room boys make a real effort to ensure that you are happy with everything. We were even rented one of the staffs moped for £1. There is entertainment at the Hotel most evenings along with a new daily menu. We basically used the Hotel as a base for which is was perfect. It is very basic and safe and warrants 3*. We would definitely stay there again.

Worried about the reviews, can you buy alcoholic drinks since it has changed hands.
Answer from Susan M
Wirral, United Kingdom2 contributions6 helpful votes
We were there in November 2018 and you could not get alcohol in the hotel then. I dont know if it has changed since then . This used to be a lovely hotel until taken over by OYO. It was an absolute dump when we were there in November. It was dirty, rooms were only cleaned when you asked them to do so. Food was awful, especially the breakfast and the staff were a joke, just youngsters messing about all day. Sun loungers were all broken, the pool was dirty. Would never go back again..
