this hotel has charm it is undeniable but it is as if the cleaning, the state of the towels and sheets have also remained in the juice .. when outside the breakfast, it is really dirty. twice, we asked to reheat the tea served cold … given the price, it’s a bit shameful
My sister and I were travelling to Kolkata for the first time and decided to accommodate our stay at this “luxury heritage hotel” as described by Make My Trip, called Elgin Fairlawn. For this, we were charged 33,600₹ and we trusted MMT and paid the full amount upfront. On the contrary, as we entered the hotel (doing an early check-in because of an early flight), we saw that the stairway was filled with dust and stains beside it, with an almost-torn register to fill in the details. But hey, they said Heritage and many of their chandeliers looked nice, so we didn’t mind and went ahead. Here’s where it gets interesting… While booking, we saw these highly-fancied-up pictures of the room that looked like royalty and words of description that would steal your heart - ALL OF THIS ON THE MAKEMYTRIP website and considering them to be the trusted partner here. As soon as we checked in, we see moulded walls, water dripping, an unhygienic bathroom with a pot that was unbearably dirty and an overall foul-smelling bathroom. So we immediately complained, and got the option to change - we were tired, sleepless and hungry and at first sight, thought the second room was at least better than the first to immediately use the restroom after our flight. - SO WE MOVED TO THE OTHER ROOM. But when we took our luggage in and were about to freshen up we realised that the other room is as bad, the bedsheet quality deteriorated over time, the fans were dirty, Gutka spits on the wall, worn out walls, and above all a dirty pot in the bathroom and another worse and foul smelling bathroom. They said that cleaning wasn't necessary and simply flushed the toilet in front of us. There were no towels provided either which is the bare minimum for a "luxury" hotel. The toilet seat was visibly dirty and how can a lady even use it is beyond me. For a four nights stay, we checked out within the first four hours. After constantly complaining to MakeMyTrip and the hotel, we haven't come to any resolution other than the hotel saying we can shift you to other rooms (when the problem is visibly everywhere) and MMT compensating with petty amounts of 3000 INR and 1500 INR, which we don't accept nor want. All of our hard-earned money is wasted, and we're still waiting for some resolution from either of the parties. Beware before booking!…
Having just arrived we were checked into a room at 2pm that had not been cleaned. Moved us to another with the caveat we would be moved tomorrow? Why not clean it now? Why not keep us in the same room? Lobby was just fumigated. I believe they used round up. No outside tables so they sent us to the upper deck. Ordered nachos and two cokes. They only have one coke in the hotel? Nachos are out? Pizza? Maybe So in less than one hour of arrival: Booked into a dirty room Told you will have to change rooms tomorrow Fumigation isn’t that bad No tables outside to eat No drinks available Food is limited to Chinese Well day two The hotel placed us in another room and said we would not have to worry about being moved Left the hotel at 6:30am with our guide and had a wonderful day touring the city and return at 3pm to find the balcony taken over along with the entire upstairs of the hotel by a film or modeling crew. A woman said we would not be allowed to use it until at least 6pm but she wasn’t sure We head to the outdoor restaurant downstairs and told that it is reserved for a private party and we can sit inside. The private party is the film crew!!! Grab an open table outside anyways and the waitress brings one menu. I ask for two. She returns and we ask for two regular cokes. She says with a smile we only have diet!! I ask if we need to drink diet and she says yes as that is all they have. I ask if she finds this funny? She then returns and says they have Pepsi. Ok! So why did you not offer this?? I would tell you that this hotel does not deal with clients who pay for rooms. This chain only worries about earning income from other sources such as a model shoot I would suggest other hotels any other than this place…
We arrived to the hotel and they provided us a room that was dirty and told us we could have a clean room tonight but would have to move to another room tomorrow. The hotel decided to fumigate today on our arrival and it’s both toxic and horrible smelling. Tried to have lunch, but since the patio was full they requested we eat in the dining room with the fumes from the fumigation. They found a spot for us on the top patio and everything we tried to order for lunch, they were out of everything, including one coke in the entire hotel. The desk staff only partially listened to our concerns until we suggested noting our experience on trip advisor. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone as there are much better places to stay without the hassles of this hotel has provided.
Celebrated my wife’s birthday here. The hotel staff have been most helpful. Everyone from the Marketing team (Ms Subrata Nandy) to the hotel staff (Riya and team) helped plan and execute the perfect surprise birthday. The food is great, and one must try at least a few of the fish/prawn recipes they serve. The in-house chef takes requests seriously and accommodates special recipes should you feel the need for it. Also the property is pet friendly at no extra cost.
Four nights in this historic hotel were a pleasure. We even got to watch the setup for filming a Bollywood movie in the hotel. Yes, it's old and under refurbishment. But it's a real deal in the meantime. A/C works; geyser can be cranky; staff is wonderful; bookshelves full of interesting reads; elegant lounges and balconies; rooms at the back are quiet; beds comfortable; linens clean; food excellent and safe for western tummies. Highly recommend.
Ants on the bed - we discovered on the last day Trapped between very busy street - the minute you leave the room the smell is bad since some of the hotel is open area. No central air-conditioning - so you need to open windows to recycle air and there's no fly-proofing. The hotel overlooks a very busy and crowded street so forget about privacy. Power outage for almost 2 hours at 10.30pm, happened again the next day - staff claims they called every room after we complained, but we were in our rooms for over 30 minutes in the dark before coming out ourselves. We asked for candles to take up to our room - after complaining that we shouldn't have had to ask they responded with"it's a fire hazard so we don't offer" Apathetic staff - the reception just nods at everything and does nothing. If they don't do a breakfast buffet it can take as long as 2 hours to eat your meal because their dining area is understaffed.…
The room , bed linen was v dirty with paint chipping off and broken bathtub in the bathroom. There’s no air conditioning in the common areas with poor service. The rooms are old and dirty. No kidding , walls are falling down and unfortunately this is what they call it Heritage boutique hotel.
Little would you know about this place from outside, this is one of the most beautiful properties i have been to in Kolkata. With stunning natural views, this old building has been converted to a first class property where you get all the luxurious amenities that will make your stay comfortable. The rooms are spacious , well ventilated, well maintained. The price is on the higher side but is justified because of the quality that they provide. The food is even better, you can either enjoy a kingly meal or you may opt for a open cafe ambience depending upon your choice as they have 2 different set ups for dining. The look drastically changes during the night and i am still confused about which look did i like more, the morning one or the evening one. Had tried many tasty dishes, the mushroom lasagne being my top favourite. You can also opt for quick bites while you chitchat with your friends in the evening. A great place to stay while you are in Kolkata…
