The Taj Bengal is a typical international 4 star property with a huge lobby that no one uses, overpriced drinks and food but extremely helpful staff. It still frustrates me that hotels of this standard spend so much on the lobby area but cannot put charger or plug points on both sides of the bed. I did enjoy their buffet breakfast of mostly Indian food (there is a selection of western style breakfast choices, but don't bother. The local food is far better) with a good selection of fresh fruit. Make sure you order your tea, coffee or a la carte options as soon as you sit down as it often took quite a while to arrive. It was also nice to see some of the chefs talking to guests, explaining what some of the food was and gave me some good advice of what to try. I liked that. The restaurant then becomes a buffet or a la carte lunch venue but this is very expensive. My room (334) was looking a bit worn and in need of updating but I suppose the hotel had spent all their money on the lobby. The laundry service which I used daily was excellent and whether I needed a full wash or just some shirts pressing was so efficient. The pool area was excellent with a large heated pool, jacuzzi and small kids pool. The staff here were excellent and even gave swimming advice to my young niece. Sanjib on Concierge was excellent and gave really good advice on the local area. My wife left her phone in a shop the other side of Kolkata and he arranged for someone to collect it and deliver it to our room. He showed outstanding service skills. The location is good, a few minutes from Victoria Memorial. You can easily walk into Chowinghee for local shops and markets to experience the city on foot. Finally, if you are visiting for the first time, make sure you get some 100 more 200 Rupee notes for tips as it is expected.

Another very good trip, this time on business. Warmly welcomed as usual followed by a seamless transition to one of my favourite rooms. Sanjib was there to greet and make sure that I was settled. There were building works ongoing however they did not seem to intrude…..Samarpita made sure that she checked on me each day, to offer other options of rooms should I feel the need to, I reassured her that I was fine. Took advantage of the rewinding opportunities, particularly after stressful work related days…. It is always nice to know that you can return to the beautiful surroundings and staff for whom ‘ no ask is too much’ as well as a comfy bed. As per usual, it was a delight as usual to catch up with Tanmoy, who made sure that I was comfortable throughout and all arrangements were unhampered including the return journey to the airport. It was the first time that I was flying domestic, airport manager Arjun made sure that I checked in without hassle….this was such a relief, as the queues out of the domestic airport were diabolical! All in all, a hectic and stressful trip that was made easy by the efforts of a team that take pride in their roles. A special shout out to Sanjib, who continues to keep me updated with important dates ( particularly during the Pujo time)…..a very personalised ‘ Bengali calendar’. Exceptional experience! Beautiful hotel with impressive lobby, spacious room with balcony overlooking the grand pool. The food was delicious and what made my stay so special was the incredible staff. I received a warm the warm greeting upon arrival from the hotel manager. The concierge Sanjib Ghosh helped me organize a hotel driver to safely show me around Kalkata. He was so helpful in setting up a private yoga class for me and arranged yoga matts and water on the pool deck for my class. Another special touch was upon going to and from the elevator was a friendly staff member to greet you. The cleaning staff were prompt in cleaning my room while I was at breakfast and the toiletries were so nice, I bought full size bottles to take home. They were also very generous in giving me samples. The star of the show was Chef K who made me a special local breakfast each morning. She would come out to greet me every morning and explain each dish, which were amazing! My stay was a 5 star experience!

It began with the Concierge, who brought us to our allocated room, telling us that the overpowering musty smell was normal for so humid Kolkata. But the corridors and public rooms did not have that smell - nor did the room to which the Duty Manager relocated us
Then, we had the interminably delayed delivery of extra hangers, there having been so few in the room. Again, the same Duty Manager expedited this.
Bed-making here must be a Taj group training failure on a unique basis. On the first night it felt like getting into an “apple pie” bed. The duvet cover was very long but rather than let the extra length drape over the end of the bed it was folded back inside, under the main covering so that it was certain to be an irritation to anyone over four feet tall
The large tissue box was allowed to run out without replacement or top- up
A stopped clock was left out in a high visibility location where anyone normal would have realised this was deliberate - it needed to have the battery changed. After four days, nothing was done about it
Similarly, a used tea cup was left out prominently to suggest this. No - it was put back dirty
The stationery folder was stated to be “ stationary” - funny but demonstrates a lack of attention to detail
In some dining outlets insufficient effort was made to clear dirty, used dishes. Seriously, which guests really want to be surrounded by these as their meal progresses?
And, we did not believe that these issues related to staff shortages. No - the problem is a lack of standards, a lack of adequate staff training and a lack of leadership focus and determination to improve.
Group Management should get on top of this quickly if the Taj reputation is not to be tarnished further

This was my second long stay (5 days) at the Taj Bengal in the past year. It's one of the properties where I felt very comfortable with barely any glitches or issues. Only a minor niggle or two. It will be difficult to find any faults really
On my first night, I had to request for a change of room, because I was not happy about the level of soundproofing, with noises floating in from the road. The team promptly found me a different room which ticked all the boxes. The changed room also happens to be amongst the renovated rooms, so that was perfect. It was smooth sailing from then on. My Club room offered access to the lounge, which I made full use of during happy hours (6-8 PM). The F&B options are not vast, but takes care of the urge for some nibbles and a drink or two. The breakfast at Cal27 is fine as well. I did mention to the chef that the breads/pastries section needs to be in a warmer section. The service at Cal27, Club Lounge was great. The housekeeping was great and complaint free as well. The hotel lobby is vast and always bustling. This helps when one needs to step out of the room once in a while.

Very polite, well-mannered, and faultless staff. However, the property is TIRED. It needs upgrading, and it seems that due to Kolkata's best hotel, Oberoi Grand, being closed for renovations, this property is getting away with substandard condition. We stayed in a club room on the 5th floor, which is actually missing a club room as it's under some maintenance. They told us to go down to the business centre where they have a temporary setup. I think it would be wiser for the hotel to not sell club room products whilst the club room isn't actually available because we did not even use it due to the location of the temporary one. Have stayed in other Taj properties before, and they have always been superb. My last stay in this one, albeit 5/6 years ago, was also very good. There were various other disappointments here, including some breakfast related issues, which I will not bother going into in this review. The hotel needs to improve its product to bring itself up to the levels of other Taj hotels.

We traveled with my husband and two children ages 6 and 8. The property is in a fantastic location over looking the nearby zoo which looks like a forest from above and gives you a peaceful lush green view from the rooms windows . My son loved seeing all the birds and even the very cute flying foxes hopping from tree to tree. He got some incredible photos and we didn’t even have to leave the room! The rooms were spacious and welcoming and everything felt very clean and organized. The food was very delicious, the breakfast buffet welcoming and delightful, with the hotel offering many western options for those of us who can’t eat lots of oils and spice. The pool was clean and refreshing especially during the hot summer days and the kids loved it. The staff all greeted us by name were beyond helpful and grateful including the excellent concierge Sanjib, debjyoti, Kaifee, and Subhas! And we absolutely LOVED our driver, Trao, who was beyond incredible in helping us navigate Kolkata, visit temples , and even helped us arrange to feed 200 people in front of Kali Ghat at the last minute . Also the hotel has an excellent in-house SUV service which made us feel very safe going out into the city and made for smooth and easy airport pickups and drop offs . The airport drop off was excellent with your staff at the airport helping us get our bags checked and even convincing the airlines to take our extra bags. I cannot remember his name but he was extremely helpful to us !!! Also the man who cleaned our room, 441 , was extremely kind and helpful and even made us little Ganesh with the towel . We really liked him. We will definitely return to the Taj Bengal when we come back to Kolkata!

Great service and polite behaviour from Shakti and Pradeep. They have been courteous and polite and promptly served us our order. The food made by Joseph was hygienic and tasted great. That have taken great care to maintain the table hygiene. We would love to come back here and bring more guests.

We arrived at the hotel at around 3:30 in the morning by the hotel’s complimentary transfer as we had booked a club room. Whilst the transfer was brilliant, the reception was not. The welcome protocol included an aarti and a welcome drink. None of these were followed. When we noticed that there were glasses with the cold drink at the reception desk, we had to request for it. We had also missed our evening meal at the hotel as this was included in the package. This was admittedly due to our time of arrival. A courteous suggestion from the reception staff should have asked us if they could send us some sandwiches perhaps with a fresh pot of tea but this was not offered. We would have turned it down anyway but that is clearly not the point.
We chose the club room as it had a bath. The room was dated.
Having said all this, the hotel was as expected- a beautiful oasis amidst the chaos of Kolkata. The staff were immensely courteous and obliging right from the management to the room cleaners.
House keeping by Rajesh and Ranjan was excellent. Toiletries were luxurious and plentiful as were the bottles of water provided in the room.
The club lounge had been recently refurbished and the staff here were very polite and hospitable. Cocktail hour provided delectable nibbles and the quality of alcoholic drinks were excellent.
Breakfast spread was bountiful and the buffet which we had every night was beyond compare. Chef Chandan went out of his way and cooked home made chicken curry which was delicious. Saptarishi and Anjay in the restaurant were great hosts.
Two members of staff in particular were the true face of what Taj stands for. Tanmoy Banerjee, the duty manager was gracious and unflappable despite the long number of hours he worked. Giant of a man, his presence was clearly felt in the lobby area. Such was his humility that he even helped guests with their luggage despite there being a whole flotilla of staff in the lobby area. We narrated to him the experience we had had during check in. His reassurance that this would be looked into was more than enough for us. our
Bimal Darnal, the concierge we remembered from our last visit. A gregarious individual with stories to tell! An excellent individual.
Apart from everything else, these two are the reason we would return to this hotel.
