This place took me by surprise. The pros balance out the cons of the place. It all depends on what is the purpose of your visit. Pros: Its quaint, super clean, and has all the basic necessities of a stay. The way they have maintained the plants there is commendable and a sight to behold. The place is almost too secure. The main gate is always locked and the staff retain the key. They sanitize you literally from top to bottom by a fogging machine (any bacteria or virus cannot survive that smoke - you yourself would barely be able to breathe properly for good 10 minutes after that fogging). They make you take off your shoes and keep it in a safe shoe rack and give you standby slippers while you are in the premises (which are the only allowed footwear inside). Staff is somewhat helpful (at least polite). Water, geyser, electricity, power backup, etc. are well in place. They are a bit flexible with check-out time too. Cons: Sooooo much paperwork (After a 3 hour flight I literally spent 25 minutes writing and filling forms before I could enter my room and lay down or even have some water). Your room key stays with the hostel staff when you want to go out and about (so security of my belongings was always a question lodged in my subconscious). Only 2 meals : breakfast and dinner are served and, although paid, are time bound - miss it or oversleep and Bam! you are fasting today!! The room I was staying in only had one power outlet point - the rooms have double occupancy and both people cannot charge or power 2 devices simultaneously. Also, its only 2 adults in a room and do not allow a third person even if you are ready to pay extra, unless its a kid for which ₹200 are charged extra per night. I have saved the best for the last. wait for it... YOU CANNOT ENTER THE PREMISES BETWEEN 10:30 pm and 6:00 am. I went there for a wedding and I was not well, so I had requested them to make an exception or at least let me enter a bit early in the morning (say 5:00 am) but a NO, CANT DO! was slapped on my face. So much for "Atithi Devo Bhava" I guess. So to sum up, if its for work or for simple staying in for the night, its a fine space. But if you are looking to have a bit of jolly time and are not a fan of strict schedules. Steer clear!…
It was pathetic experience...visited for a business reason..however it was really pathetic experience i will never recommend anyone.... please find better options where you get the maximum satisfaction
Location with in reach from Kolkata airport. We were there for one night. Manager Shri Ghosh is always reachable. Rooms are well maintained. Food served is simple veg but tasty. staff is well behave. Proper booking is required.
An economical, clean and comfortable place to stay with all the basic facilities. I visited in January 2018, and found the staff extremely helpful. I though I would be sharing the rooms with other but it turned out that I could have the room to myself. I missed the dinner as I reached late had to survive on biscuits but they couldn't have done anything anyway.
I first stayed here in Dec 2016 for one night. I returned to stay there for 2 nights from 6.2.2018 - 8.2.2018, mainly because of the pleasant experience i had when i stayed here in Dec 2016 and also the helpful and friendly staff, Ganesh. During this stay, Ganesh was his usual cheerful and helpful. He and the cook arranged breakfast and dinner which was simple and delicious. I will only stay here when i go to Kolkata again in the future simply because the hostel is very clean, quite and safe.
This hostel was suggested by a friend who has been here several times on Solo trips too. And yes, it is clean and homely, safe and well cared!! We were a group of 5 friends. As we entered the gate which was opened after we rang the bell, we were asked to remove our shoes and wear home slippers. And that is the reason the cleanliness. Next, our luggage was whisked by Ganesh who took it to our respective rooms. Was helpful for there is no lift and the rooms are upto the third floor. Abhay made each of us write our details and handed over the keys. The staff were very helpful and attended to our needs like providing hot water for drinking and bath, helping in sourcing material which we required for our artistic event and opening doors for us when we came late in the night. Yes, they are strict about timings but thats why you feel safe. But inside the hostel, we could stay up late, jamming up together in one room and talking into the night. Overall, its a humble place to stay, clean and safe and best for solo and group. Their food too is tasty, homely and clean. Suggestion is: Would be good to have Internet facility and Lift.…
I had attended Youth Hostel Kolkata for one of the cultural festivals and found it economical and located in the centre of the city. If you have to stay for 1 week or longer, than this place is the best as you might meet people from different region.
The place is absolutely clean and tidy. We were a family of 3 preferred staying at youth hostel compared to hotel, The place is slightly far off from say esplanade or howrah but very well connected from by Metro. One needs to take an auto from Seethi More (cross) to the Dum Dum Metro station. You can go to the heart of the city within 15 to 20 min. For somebody travelling by train Dum Dum Railway junction is close by so also the Kolkata station (modern railway station). Only concern is with the staff, they do not understand anything beyond Bengali so any instruction regarding the food make sure they have understood the way you want them to understand. The hostel gates are under lock and key always except when visitors wants to get inside. The door remains closed from 10PM to 6 AM, so plan your arrival and departure accordingly. Check out is from 12 noon to 11 AM next day Dont forget to collect the map and bus guide, which gives bus numbers, trains and details of the sight seeing spots…
We had a great stay for two nights and would have stayed even longer if it would not have been booked out. It is far from main tourist attractions but you can reach it without problems by bus and metro or train. It is a great place and the best choice compared to overpriced and more expensive places around new market with poor hygiene. Would choose this place again if I come back.
I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights. I really loved the place of stay, they are strict with the timing gate opens @6 in morning and closes @ 10 in night. The workers were friendly & trustworthy. Everytime you leave the room you need to deposit the key at reception for maintainance purpose. The place is far away from city. Though Dumdum is the nearest metro it's better to take metro from Noapara.
