This place had sentimental value as I had people owning couple of ground floor units. I had an adequate non aircon room. As a solo traveller, I felt safe. Location fantastic. Lift man n overseers were helpful. Needs improvement on ensuring rooms and bins are cleaned everyday. Bed sheets, towels changed every day or two -guests should not have to ask for these services. TV did not work. Curtains need to be washed regularly as they did appear to have been washed since they were put on!! I would stay there always and did try to book a room for this year but the rooms are ALL SOLD OUT. Clear indication of how popular it is.
My first room was uncomfortable and I could not sleep. They moved me the next day to a nice room. No frills, but the bed was clean and the shower had nice hot water. I will definitely stay again. The roof top desk is nice and the guesthouse is within walking distance to new market and Mother house .
i spent 3 nights in this guesthouse. the location is good, the staff was helpful.... but... no sheets in my bed, just a blanket , dirty and very noisy... but for the price is was an excellent experience.
Stayed here 5 Nights in Calcutta with my Wife. Good points excellent location close to Park Street & Strong Wifi in rooms. Bad points Room & Ensuite were Dirty & they allowed guests to smoke in rooms that left a horrible smell throughout guest house. Cold showers most days. Staff were very unfriendly & wanted to sell you a 200 rupees breakfast that was a total ripoff. Could not sleep for 5 days as there is a 7 storey building be constructed next door that starts at 5.00am & finishes at 9.00pm one night construction went all night with jackhammers. Would not recommend ....
Much enjoyed my 7-day stay here. Quirky place with old lift, beautiful roof top terrace, friendly staff, clean rooms and in-room wifi. It's also about ten mins walk from Park Street Metro which is very handy for getting around Kolkata. Five mins walk from good local restaurants. It's perfect if you're balancing budget with quality.
One of my favorite hotels in India to date (3 trips and a year of traveling in India). It's certainly cheap, old, and no frills, but the rooms are clean, the elevator up to the hotel is always fun (great view through the floors), and both the building itself and the rooftop are fantastic. They held our bags after checkout until our night train without issue, too. The location is also fantastic, as it's right around the corner from the action, but is on a quiet side street. I'll definitely stay here next time I'm in Kolkata.
Do not hesitate to book this hotel if you simply need a clean, secure, centrally-located room at a budget price. A big thank you to the friendly and welcoming staff for a very pleasant place to stay in a chaotic city!
i would definitely recommend staying here .location is great short walk to park st sudder st museum etc. Security is excellent the water is hot and wi fi in my room was very good . Staff will do all they can to make your stay comfortable. Oh and an amazing old elevator .
One street, Royd, Behind Park Street's flaking makeup, Behind a maze of working trucks, Behind it all, Up a creaky old open lift, Beautifully maintained and worked By a creaky old man, Through a silo of quiet apartments, The Sunflower Guest House, A Masterclass in Minimalism, No frills, bells or whistles here, Clean as a whistle, though, Spotless cracked floors, fresh sheets, enabled By the lack of a smelly kitchen rendered Redundant really, by a plethora Of restaurants and cafes nearby, The laconic service supine on ancient benches, Stupefied by humid Kolkata, Only to spring up alertly, in minutes, To fetch you a bottle of water, Or an early morning chai. The Sunflower Guest House: A well priced eyrie, above it all.
My friend suggested I stay at Sunflower guesthouse during my visit to Kolkata because he told me it was reasonably priced, clean and secure as well as being in a convenient city central location. He was quite correct with his assessment of the place for me. It felt like a historic and dingy old apartment block when we first entered, with old fashioned paint colour schemes and an archaic lift, but actually these features are what ended up apealing to me very much. Heading to reception the man in charge there was not in any way willing to bargain or negotiate the room price despite my saying I would stay a few days. So I looked at two rooms, one a sparse cheap single bed room and the second a room with double bed and window plus TV which was more expensive but suited my needs well. My one or two day stay turned into a week because I was comfortable and secure at this guesthouse. The hot water never worked and the plumbing left a LOT to be desired due to washers missing from each tap, plus a toilet seat that wasn't even attached to the toilet itself! But the room was clean, the fan worked as did the TV, and the boys who slept outside my room as cleaners and security were very nice and friendly. Most of all, like other reviewers on this site, I found the lift guy to be friendly, patient, charming and helpful, and therefore he, out of everyone, made my daily stay a pleasure, bless him.…
