Travellers' Choice
A restored 1920s townhouse represen-tative of a golden era in Calcutta's architecture. In the heart of the Bengali part of the city that the British referred to as the Black Town. A quick half an hour drive from the airport. Six well-appointed bedrooms with all modern amenities. Tastefully and lovingly decorated by celebrated local designer Swarup Dutta.

I visited the bungalow with my family. Very beautiful and clean rooms, with a rustic looking interior. The breakfast spread was very sumptuous. The hospitality and behavior of the staff was excellent. The bungalow looks really pretty with lights after sunset. Would loved to visit again 😍

After coming across Calcutta Bungalow we were very excited to stay and have an authentic Bengali experience, the property is stunning and did not disappoint. The staff are really great. We arrived late at night and Wasim was there to greet us and take care of us, as he did every day of our stay. The ladies at the front desk are very nice and will set up a WhatsApp group with you to help with your needs like ordering dinner etc - very handy. Some of the younger staff would play with our baby which was very sweet. They were all attentive and kind without being overbearing. The building restoration has been carefully considered and executed in fine detail. Our room: we had a large king room with a balcony overlooking the colourful streets, a real treat for the senses. The bed and pillows were comfortable and the linen is high quality. The facilities have been brought up to a modern standard, yet are wonderfully sympathetic to the heritage of the building and there is beautiful antique furniture throughout. The multi plugs were especially handy. The shower does take quite a few minutes to warm up, not a big deal and considering many locals bathe in the street taps that run from the Ganga, a real luxury. If you need to sleep in a dark room the lights coming through the courtyard windows may be bothersome, some simple blinds would fix this. Naturally, there is some noise from the street at times but this is part of the local charm. The in-house food is delicious, although it would be good to have a smaller option as the multiple course menu is very generous in size. There are some thoughtful and well decorated common areas that are especially nice to relax in, we really enjoyed the rooftop terrace and plantation loungers. Location wise, you will have an authentic experience, there are markets and parks within walking distance, and you can enjoy Cha in a clay cup just around the corner. Because it’s a very local area, the people are naturally curious of foreigners, we received a lot of attention due to travelling with a baby. There a a few small things that would greatly improve and take the property to the next level: Cleanliness in parts, and some service basics need brushing up on. Probably a management/training issue. - The floors were not mopped in the rooms and the minute you take your shoes off your feet will be black, seems to be a cultural thing, although for such a beautiful oasis from the streets we felt this detail could really lift the overall experience. - Tables on the terrace and dining room were not cleaned often. A few times we wanted to sit at the lounge area on the terrace in the morning but there were still drinks and mess on the table from the night before. - Table place mats were stained and didn’t seem to be cleaned or changed during our stay. - Milk at the coffee/tea station was left out for use with a cover on it, no refrigeration so in the morning if we wanted to make a coffee early in the morning the milk was curdled (we are up with the birds before anyone else). A small bar fridge in this area would help, as would a rubbish bin for tea bags etc. - Napkins are not always offered with meals, and sometimes cutlery items were forgotten, again, what I would consider a service training issue. - There are many photo shoots taking place in the hotel, nearly every day of our stay. It didn’t bother us too much, but is something to consider if you like to leave your room and make use of the common spaces. Overall we thought this was a charming and beautiful appointed property and the people are very kind.

I loved the stay, and most importantly, my parents loved it. The essence and the authenticity of the place is indeed amazing. The food has a different homely taste. Especially the CB team, worth all the shout out to their hospitality. Oh I made a tiny friend too🤭 and painted my heart out. It has the perfect ambience to get your creativity working 😬

I wanted to get a flavour of the history that Kolkata has quite well preserved. This particular property was renovated with all the modern amenities while preserving the colloquial architecture...each room was themed to tell a story about Kolkata. The service was topnotch, all information required for a tourist was always available. I truly had one of the best times staying there. Also the property is very close to the metro station which is blessing really. Get all the required information from the staff members they are very kind and helpful.
