Words cannot express what a pleasure it was for our family to stay at the Great Eastern singularly due to Mr Tayab Hussain’s level of service. You gave us the confidence that if India can be manged by people such as you, it would be our pleasure to return to India again and again. You made our stay Most Pleasurable. Endless thanks to you and your team for your care and attention to out every need. Thank you!
This historic hotel has been restored to create a comfortable modern hotel with some retained heritage. However the principle feel is a modern international hotel. Special thanks to Ekata for a most interesting historical tour. Good points: The rooms, door staff, reception ( thanks to Tayab) concierge (good work Rishi) housekeeping and laundry all first rate 5 star. Well priced for the quality of room. Good location. Not so great: There is negligible social space within the hotel. Eg no lounge or bar open to provide a cool drink after a long day. There is a separate bakery/bar down the street of which more later. Food is ok (buffet almost exclusively Indian food - good for me but don’t expect international) but service surprisingly chaotic, inattentive and slow (Prattab an exception - thanks). Staff did not seem to have allocated tables or to be scanning for diners who needed something. I did not try the a la carte menu which you still have to access on your phone (Covid precaution?). They have an ambitious cocktail menu (again if you access it on your phone) but clearly lack the ingredients or expertise to make it a reality. I was pleased to see a dry martini correctly described (including vermouth) and ordered one. After a long delay a weird drink nothing like a dry martini showed up. I appreciate it can be tricky and went to the bar area to offer some gentle suggestions. Became apparent the problem was they had no vermouth, did not know it was an ingredient. Senior staff later reported to me that they were unable to get vermouth even in the five remaking days of my stay. Guys! Let’s edit the drinks menu to things you can actually provide! The bakery. Ah yes. You exit the hotel and walk down the street maybe 40m the old hotel bakery converted to coffee shop and bar. Sadly I was told the bar are did not open until 8pm and it was grim and unwelcoming with only stand up tables. The bar is names after Wilson who founded the hotel. He must be turning in his grave. I tried the coffee shop one afternoon for a brownie and coffee. Three staff. Two customers and myself. It was like I was invisible. I practically had to jump in front of staff to get acknowledgement and place my order. The brownie was sitting portioned up in the display case. The coffee machine right next to them. 15 mins later they still had not completed it and I gave up and went to my room to make myself a cup of tea. Again I felt this was a staff training issue. Finally watch out for noise if you have a “city view”. The street outside is lively. Ask for a room as high as possible. More seriously the hotel held two functions with very loud booming music affecting my room on Fri and Sat. On Friday the music stopped at 11:30 - fair enough. On Sat night it was still going at 1:15 so no chance of sleep. I phoned reception and they immediately offered another room (so they clearly know this is a problem) but said it would stop at 1:30 so I decided to stick it out. Still going 1:40 so I take up the offer of a move it was a few floors up which helped a bit bit the music stopped 2:00. You are either a nightclub or a hotel. If you want to do both sort out the soundproofing. In short guests may need to be very clear with reception that you want a room to sleep in not to dance! I will probably go somewhere else next time.…
It was nice stay at the hotel, people are very cooperative and property is amazing, it's seems like new constructed, well maintained, location is very convenient, front team is lovely Mr. Suman is kind hearted person who know the actual meaning of hospitality, I'll definitely come back again 😊
It was my 2nd visit to this hotel. My previous stay was okay, but this time I loved it 🥰. I was on a business trip, on my own. This hotel's location is super convenient, like its close to the howrah station and hardly one hour from the Kolkata Airport. This hotel is like 200 years old 😮! But still it looks as good as new 🤩. But it would be better if the pool was heated! But it's okay. I would like to mention that Arka at the reception was so helpful. Thanks to you for making my stay memorable. I will definitely be coming back here! ☺️
At its heart, the Lalit is a very good hotel with comfortable rooms, good wifi and responsive staff on the desk. There was a wedding while we were there and the music was so loud that our room reverberated with the noise so we told the staff on reception and they moved us to a much quieter place. We were impressed with their responsiveness given how busy the hotel was. But the hotel needs to do something about breakfast which was visibly under-staffed and chaotic. We went at 7.45 which, supposedly, was a good time to go, but nobody was in sight, things weren’t ready and, anyway, the quality was not great. Come on, Lalit - get this right and you’ll get five stars from me.
We bought a Premier twin bedded room. We reserved it from the previous day as we were arriving by train by train at 6am. We were shown to a lovely room but it was double bedded. It took until after lunch to be given a twin bedded room. It was not Premier and was a standard size (verified by a bell boy). . We simply wanted what was purchased. After hours of polite discussions we were offered a suite into which a single bed could be fitted. We agreed but only to be told, by phone, quite some time later. that there would be a surcharge. We feel very shortchanged. There is no information about the hotel and it’s amenities in the room, no hand towel and all items purchased have to be paid for at the point of service rathe than being added to the room bill as is customary. No apology or gesture to provide good will forthcoming. What a shame we didn’t take photos to prove the point.…
I cannot express my immense gratitude towards you all 😇 It was my first ever visit to this hotel. My fiance and I checked in here a week ago and from the very first step in this hotel.. my experience was awesome 😃! When we came here a large group of people was at the front desk, trying to get their rooms. So we thought... It might be a hectic stay. But to our surprise, Mr. Arka helped us to cut through the long queue and get our room asap! 😄 The room he gave us was actually really cool 💓 as it had a great view to the Great and old Kolkata ✨. We stayed here for two nights. Yet our stay was really comfortable and nice. And a special name to mention is Mr. Mainak at the concierge. Kudos to you guys 🙏🏼 But the only thing I felt a little low is a delay at service. I don't know why, but the in-room dining experience was slightly disappointing. 🙁 Apart from that, Everything was nice and super comfortable. 🥰 Thank you so much for your lovely hospitality.…
We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. Tayab the receptionist made our stay excellent. He went out of his way to show us the hotel and it give is an overview of its history, he answered our questions, and he recommended to us good places to see and dine it. Thank you Tayab!
When I visited Kolkata, I couldn't help but make a reservation at a well-known 5-star hotel. The LaLiT Great Eastern hotel in Kolkata has a long history of legendary stays and a unique blend of architectural styles. The food, staff & service were top-notch. I'd definitely recommed this best 5 star Restaurant/Hotel in Kolkata. A must visit.
I absolutely loved the heritage tour conducted within the hotel. This hotel has a 180 year old legacy, and very interesting artifacts on display. Request the reception for it and they will assist you. Ms. Ekata was very knowledgeable and sweet. One less point for the service. Since it is a 5 star we expect prompt service. They can definitely improve on that front. It took 3 phone calls to get drinking water, and I requested for a pen that never arrived. The breakfast spread is good but nothing exceptional. If you like history then this hotel is a must stay. Enjoyed our stay overall.
