Detailed Reviews
The bar cum restaurant at the Broadway Hotel fits the description of a 'dive bar' perfectly. Here one can find cheap food and drinks. There is a certain old world charm in the interior which can perhaps find its root in the British era (it was founded in 1937). The patrons are an odd mix - there are young trendy folk checking out the ambience, and old regulars who drop in after work for a couple of drinks. The fish starters are a specialty, although the menu is surprisingly varied and covers a wide range of cuisines. Drinks are some of the cheapest in the city. A modest tip is expected to be handed over to the waiter post meal.

We went for a drink and some snacks to the Broadway and it really is an epic experience. The oldest hotel in the city boasting of virtually no renovation since it’s inception offers a true feeing of nostalgia, old world charm and a colonial experience. Decent quality of food, beer on tap, definitely a place worth visiting at least once, if not again and again.

Great option to put you in the workaday life of Kolkata with no presence of tourists. 1940's ambience, good restaurant for a western breakfast with a great veg cutlet, a hot spot in the evening for having a drink in a non sleazy atmosphere. Rooms are basic old school, has elevator with an operator, good staff. Just what I wanted.

Goons and Hooliganism at Broadway Hotel.
Terrible food, unhygienic with rata roaming around . Waiters are impolite and they don't pack billed items . Management supports such decisions and is disrespectful towards artists. Avoid this place

We enjoyed our beer and a biriyani here. It is an historic bar with a great ambience that oozes character. It was a great experience with lively clientele. Spacious tables and friendly staff.

Sure this hotel has loads of retro character, unfortunately however the staff that works the front desk are quite rude, do not know how to say please or thank you, refuse to book reservations for guests. Furthermore, I stayed at this hotel for over a week but was having a difficult time sleeping in the morning due to noise by the launderers on the roof above me. Instead of simply apologizing and/or trying to somehow accomodate me, the manager instead claimed that another person from my same country stayed in that exact room for 1 month prior and never complained about such noise at all (Translation: "What's wrong with YOU??"). Statled by the lack of professionalism in his reply, I attempted to mention the obvious that all guests needs are not identical (whether or not they reside from the same country) and that sleeping patterns between individuals vary widely. Despite this, he continued to try to press forward his absurd, illogical point, i.e. that the noise itself wasn't a legitimate issue of concern unless all guests complained with total consistancy about it.
Due to such attitudes by management at this hotel I cannot recommend it to travelers who value both courtesy, relaxation and a good night's rest.

located next to Chandi Chowk metro station, good restuarants nearby, short walks to BBD Bagh, Maidan, this hotel is a gem. Friendly helpful staff, a good & buzzing restuarant on ground floor. I paid 675Rs/night for a good sized single room. cable TV, excellent room service, so much cheaper than a lot of Sudder Street hotels

In late February, I stayed in Broadway hotel for three nights. This is my second stay here. My first stay was three years ago with my family. This time, I came for a short trip. The reasons I chose Broadway are:
1. Location: Very near to Chadni Chawk metro, so easy to give direction to taxi driver
2. Several eating places nearby, Mission café right across the street, Shabir hotel is 5 min walk. Park street is a short metro or taxi ride
3. Hotel is clean. It is an old place with fixtures and furnitures in bad shape, but everything is clean
4. Very reasonable rate unlike other hotels who charges European rate for Indian standard hotels
5. I saw a cockroach once, so if you stay there make sure your suitcase/bags etc are always zipped up. I kept the windows open, so I think cockroach came from outside.
6. Easy to book online, 24 checkout so you can stay full 24 hours, no need for advance payment to confirm your reservation
7. Will I stay there again, sure. If I am on a tight budget, I will go stay in Hotel Broadway.

Excellent place to stay in Calcutta. Right across the street from the convenient metro station - Chandni Chowk. Really well priced for the size of the rooms and the service provided by the friendly staff. Lots or character in the building with an old school elevator and working-class bar on the ground floor. No hot water, but with the heat you won't want a hot shower anyway. The only downside is no WiFi.
