Detailed Reviews
After reading reviews we was abit worried about zama lodge.
However we found the staff helpful and friendly, they didn't speak great English but we don't speak Hindi so that's only fair! Not to far from airport or train station, I paided 300r for a single room and shared bathroom was dusty but no bugs.
Right next to main road so can be noisey and the traffic does not stop at any point.
However overall I would recommend Zama lodge is very good for such a cheap price.

Nobody knew where this place was. It took us almost an hour to find it.
We stayed here one night, thankfully. After being in India for 5 weeks we knew a bit about the scams. We were shown to our room by a man clutching a bottle of Kingfisher. He asked for a 'service charge' once he'd shown us the room (which had 2 beds and a broken TV, nothing else), which we refused. Then he wouldn't leave the room until we gave him some laundry. We had to almost push him out of our room.
The room was disgusting. Truly a prison cell with a 3cm thick mattress. Travelling for over a month in India had given us some experiences when it came to accommodation, but this was the worst by far.

For 620 rupees on Hostelbookers I didn't expect this place to be clean, and it wasn't. Parts of the hotel smell like someone was using the hallways as a toilet. The sink and shower would barely dribble a little cold water- I recall standing under the shower waiting and waiting to get wet. The wifi they advertise on their web site is an internet cafe 3 blocks away. They also claim cable tv, but I didn't see any. I have no idea what their 'hot water facility' is. But the icing on the cake was the drunk-as-a-skunk manager trying to tell me that 700 rupees minus HB's' 10% equalled 556 rupees, and charging me the full 700 for a late checkout.
If you have the misfortune to find yourself in Chennai, and you're really desperate, Zama might suffice. But I'd look elsewhere. Check the photos.

Response from ZamaLodge, Manager at Zama Lodge
Responded 24 Mar 2013
The photographs of the rooms shown are not the rooms that we give to people who come through Hostelbookers (ie Photo 1 and Photo 2) but the rooms which have been kept aside for alteration. The third picture of a wash basin (Photo 3), is a wash basin in an area meant for cleaning and other staff. This person takes a pictures of some dirty room which is not even used and a picture of a wash basin where it is dirty (to give us a bad name). The person overstayed and we charged the person for the duration overstayed. Since we charged for the extra stay the person is taking revenge and putting up such a review. Thats why the person is writing such a review. Moreover if we do not have water we wont be able to run the business. Why such negative remarks. And about alcohol.. The person who works as night manager is a muslim person working with us for a long time. He could have been sleepy BUT DEFINATELY NOT DRUNK. This person is angry that we charged for the extra stay and writes TOO MANY WRONG THINGS and puts WRONG PHOTOGRAPHS to tarnish our image.. Thats not right.. Please check with us before you post such a review.

I arrived at Zama Lodge in the early hours of the morning, having booked via Internet. I have never seen such a disgraceful place anywhere. The bathroomj was filthy, and the room had obviously not even been swept, as there were cigarette ends on the floor. The sheet and pillow case were dirty, I did not want to even sit on the bed, let alone sleep on it.
I stayed in the room as it was after 2am, and left at the first opportunity

Their website seemed ok, and I had to book this place as there was no other choice at 1 a.m. When i arrived, the place looked really filthy and a bit creepy (luckily it is accross a police station, and it IS Chennai, so it is a bit safer than other cities in India). The person in charge was very aggressive and wanted to force my friend and me to pay in advance for 4 nights. As I refused, he called who I assume was the hotel manager or owner (yes, at 1:30 a.m.) to yell at him because we were paying for only one night. I checked two rooms and we had no choice but to stay there. 700 rupees for this was of course too much for the facilities. I have stayed at many places in India, but this place is by far the worst. We left as soon as we could that same morning. I don't recommend any female traveler to stay there.

if your looking for anything above a .25 star ledge, this place isn't for you.
being one of the only gueshouses on hostel world made it really the only choice without hitting up the hotels.
the rooms are dirty, and i say that with the upmost backpacking experience behind me, i believe the sheets have never been washed, ever.
i would only recommend if you have a flight and just need somewhere to throw your bags and dont want to spend more then 7-800 rupees a night on a room.

I had stayed there when i came to go to Apollo Hospital. Its an Old Building which has been maintained well. The staff were very co-operative and the price was definitely VALUE FOR MONEY. They do not have A/c rooms (all rooms are non a/c).
If anyone is looking for economical accommodation with not too many fancy things then it is definitely the place to stay. The place also very safe to stay (its right opposite to the Police Station). Its very accessible too coz its on Anna Salai (MOUNT ROAD). I could just step out and get a auto rickshaw (tuk tuk) or a bus. Very strategically located I would say.

Their website seemed good to me and i booked through website but when i arrive there the room was a bit creepy and a fowl smell was coming near to room.
While staying tthere i asked the person to change room bed sheet, bed sheet was looking like it was never washed since 3-4 years.

I had come to chennai to attend Visa Interview at US Consulate.. Zama Lodge was just 5 minutes from the US Consulate. Shops were also close by... I could get an Auto easily to go to Marina Beach..
Clean place, nice paint (Blue).. Price was CHEAP.. No Doubt.. Would recommend this place to all my friends.

Stayed in Zama Lodge because there's not many hostel selection in online hostel booking service. When I arrived there, there's no computer on the reception desk. I think I should've got a better room based on the room description during the online booking. The room is dusty, the fan is not even working, the bathroom is terrible. The only advantage of this lodge is it's located in the main street.
