A lesser-known fact about Rajasthani monuments is that rarely were forts, palaces and havelis (large residences) constructed at one go. Each generation added new wings, rooms and arches in an architectural style prevalent during its time. DeraMandawa has also seen such an evolution, as the Mandawa family constantly kept extending the residence over the years. Thakur Durga Singh, the current custodian of DeraMandawa is a keen observer of history, culture, religion, current affairs, and is a bank of knowledge so vast that he has a point of view on anything under the sun. He is what one could call a modern traditionalist, actively seeking the use of modern technology and methods to support the principles of traditional living. The inquisitive can have endless conversations with him on a number of his projects like rain -water harvesting, biogas plant, solar heating and, even, healthy cooking. He would be more than delighted to share his experiences with you.

Had a lovely evening at this small hotel that was formerly a residence of the royal family and still occupied by the current members of the family. Our host gave us a detailed cooking demonstration on country cooking with informative discussions of all of the spices and techniques, allowing us to participate in the preparation, all of which took place in the courtyard of the residence. Once the food was ready we were served a full dinner and we were joined by our host who continued to regale us with stories and histories of India and his family.

Wonderful room in a comfortable and original heritage site. Wonderfully hosted with good, home-cooked food, our stay was home from home from the moment we arrived. We sat outside on our verandha drinking beer after playing Holi, and were treated to a local puppet show on our second night. Durgar was a wealth of historical and current information and we could not have been better looked after.

My wife and I wanted to get away for a quiet getaway for New Year's and we couldn't have picked a better place to do so. Rarely do you visit a place where you find zero faults and Dera Mandawa genuinely gave us zero reasons to complain. The owner - Durga Singh ji is the most warm and hospitable host and the place feels like home from the moment you arrive. The rooms are akin to staying in a royal palace - 10/10 on space, cleanliness, aesthetic. The entire place is so beautifully done and every little detail of the property tells a story. We stayed for 6 nights and while we had some meals outside the property as well, the best meals that we had were at the property. The staff was supremely courteous and drew the perfect balance between giving us our space and yet always prompt with any request that we had. We had taken our dog along as well and everyone at the property was most accommodating to ensure he had a really fun stay - helped us with his food, he had space to run around as well and the hosts were really warm towards him as well. One of the key highlights of our trip was our daily conversations with the host - Durga Singh ji who would tell us stories about Rajasthan, their culture and gave us some of the best recommendations as to what all we could look to do during our stay in the city. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Jaipur as and when I go back - thank you Durga Singh ji and your family and the entire staff for making our stay so memorable. See you soon!

There are many good hotels in Jaipur, I have stayed at a few personally and rated them 5* too.. but after staying at Dera Mandawa this time, I know I will be staying at Dera Mandawa anytime I am in Jaipur in future.. Right from when I called him for enquiry and booking, the owner Durga Singh won our hearts.. Such a soft spoken person who really cares for the guests.. What stands out at this place is the hospitality… The owner goes out of his way every single time to help you out and to make your stay more comfortable.. we literally felt like we were part of his family and visiting him.. We had such a good time just chatting up with him.. He told us about the history of the haveli, family and Jaipur.. His wife also came to talk to us.. His grandkids included my kid in their play.. He taught us a traditional game and it has been my kid’s favourite since then.. my kid wants to go back to play with his new friends and grandpa .. The haveli itself is huge and the rooms are more than spacious.. The rooms are special in themselves and something to experience yourself... The courtyards are green with ample space to hang out and a swing to spend your evenings on.. The moment you enter the room, it has a calming effect on you.. just take in the carvings and beautiful colours, decor and place to hang out and a big bed for a very sound sleep.. I am uploading the photos but they don’t do justice to the grandeur of the rooms.. We had 3 rooms and all of them were beautiful and huge, double height ceilings, another day room on the upper floor, sitting area with windows, etc. The bathrooms were as spacious too with a separated shower area.. even the towels were double the size (length AND breadth) of usual ones :P It was so relaxing to hang out in the courtyards that I cancelled my shopping plan in Jaipur and just spent the whole afternoon and evening on the swing in the courtyard. The food served at Dera Mandawa was simple, home-cooked and very tasty. We really needed that after eating out for 10 days on the trip. We all still remember the Bina chounk ki kadhi and other delicacies.. We were very hungry when we reached because of delayed flight in Jaisalmer (and Jaisalmer airport has no place to buy a water bottle or food) and we were welcomed with hot chai and yum pakodas as we entered :-) highly appreciated.. The puppet show that he organised for us was mind-blowing.. We all enjoyed it and my kid was amazed and literally giggling throughout the show.. The location is good.. less than 5 min walking distance to the metro station ( super impressed with the metro by the way.. clean, well run, clear instructions everywhere ) or you can even take a tuktuk to major tourist attractions. Walking/tuktuk distance to famous Rawat kachori, Santosh Bhojanalay and other delights in Sindhi camp too.

After being greeted by the owner, Mr. Singh, we were shown to our room, which turned out to be the bridal suite! Mr. Singh was a gregarious host, very knowledgeable about the history of his house and Jaipur. He was determined that all his guests should enjoy the Holi festival, and arranged for a marionette show, followed by the lighting of a huge bonfire, which everyone danced around. The next day, there were plates of coloured powders for us all to throw at each other, in the spirit of Holi. It was enormous fun. This was followed by a delicious lunch. We definitely would recommend staying at Dera Mandawa. Mr. Singh is a true gentleman, eager to share his home, of which he is so proud, with you.
