Good for walkers
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The Grand Hotel is at a convenient location along the eastern seafront of Bombay.
The 4-storeyed hotel has one lift up to the third floor, and you have to take the stairs to go to the 4th.
We had booked a queen-sized bed room, but were given a twin bed. When we asked about the bed, a hotel staff was sent over to join the beds, but then stood around expecting a tip for just sliding the beds together.
The room had an over-powering odor. I'm assuming this is from the chemicals used to clean the linen. We asked the hotel staff if they had some air-freshener. He said he couldn't get any smell and just walked off, disappointed for not receiving a tip for all of his bed-sliding effort!
The room quiet and peaceful. We did not have hot water in the bathroom. The washbasin tap did not have good water pressure, so washing hands was not easy.
Some of the hotel staff were weird in their interaction. For example, for breakfast, when my wife took a seat first instead of heading to the breakfast buffet, the staff made her uncomfortable by unnecessarily asking if she was fasting. Why assume that a female guest taking a seat at the restaurant is fasting?
In most 3-star and up hotels that we've been to in India and around the world, the staff at breakfast have asked if our stay was comfortable or if we wanted water/tea/coffee eggs made-to-order. Here at The Grand Hotel, they didn't care to extend that courtesy. Most of the hotel staff we've encountered throughout our short stay lacked social etiquette.
The breakfast spread was nice (but could be better) with some of Bombay's local and popular fast-food (vada pav, medu vada, pav bhaji, poha, and so on.)
We had booked via the hotel website, and as per our booking email, the hotel has a late check-out flexible policy subject to availability. We did not require a late check-out, but I simply asked the reception about it just in case we needed more time. The response was a hard NO! "We are completely sold-out and you have to vacate for the next guests". The tone was rude and unnecessary.
The hotel has its charm for its location and history. However, the current management and staff have a lot to learn about hospitality. If we were to come here for another stay, it would only be for the location. We would rather not interact with the staff.

The location is great: in a quite part of the East of South Mumbai, with wide, tree lined streets, the Grand Hotel is still within walking distance of major attractions, like galleries, historic buildings and the train stations. Marine drive takes a bit longer but still doable on foot and so is the Gateway of India. Over lunchtime, street food places cater to the numerous office employees in the area.
There are different room categories. The double we had was of the smaller type, totally ok, but I would advise to invest a bit more and to take a "family room" for extra space and a larger bath room.
While the quality of the laundry service was just average, the absolute highlight was the reception team. Contrary to some earlier reviews, we found them extremely friendly and welcoming, solving smaller issues/requests in a fast and friendly matter.

I stayed at The Grand Hotel for a few days 7 years ago & enjoyed it's peaceful yet convenient location. Returning to Mumbai , I saw no reason not to return & was not disappointed. As before , I booked a balcony room situated at the rear of the hotel which overlook the docks & warehouses.. The Grand is an old , distinctive building with 4 floors , 3 of which are served by a lift , the 4th floor is only accessible via a winding staircase from the 3rd floor. Rooms are modern with , in my case , desk , armchairs , table , t. v. , kettle , decent bathroom ( always with hot water ) . Also a 'fridge. The dining area is on the ground floor. I had the buffet breakfast included & this was perfectly acceptable with cereals , toast , traditional Indian dishes , fruit , juices , tea , coffee & eggs on request. Helpful , friendly staff. The greatest benefit , apart from being in a quiet location , is the exceptionally convenient position of the hotel . Only a bare 10 mins walk from Chhatrapati Shivaji train terminus & really easy , level walking distance to all the best of South Mumbai such as Kala Ghoda , Gateway of India , Colaba the Maidans & Marine Drive.

Beautiful old-school hotel. I had some work in that particular area (Apollo Bunder, Ballard Pier, Ballard Estate) and this hotel was within walking distance to all the offices I had to visit. The rooms are spacious with window AC. The AC has a remote so it was very convenient to turn it on and off! I love the soft sound of the compressor, it reminds me of the AC unit which we in my Dad’s room back home. Please note that this property is old and is like a heritage building. Breakfast was good with freshly brewed coffee, bread, croissants, eggs, sausages and a few Indian dishes. The staff here are very friendly and polite. There are lots of restaurants and bars in this area within walking distance. I used to walk to Colaba Causeway for shopping, also walked to Nariman Point. I didn’t let the staff change my linen everyday since I stayed there only for four nights, had to hang the ‘Do not disturb’ board outside my door. It was certainly a memorable trip!

The place is very badly managed and everything is falling apart. The breakfast is very bad with little choice and just 1/2 waiters to manage guests living in 90 plus rooms. The cheap tea bags are unhigenically kept open in the trey gathering dust. It seems nobody cares for the convenience of guests. The toilet didn't have any exhaust and a terrible torn mesh to seal windows was all that the hotel provides. Nor was there any footmet outside toilet to wipe feats. This makes the floor very slippery. The hotel is under repair that causes great inconvenience for the guests.

Grand Hotel gave us an old-world flair experience in a 100 year old building filled with history. We stayed in a harbour room only accessible by a classic staircase which we reminsced on the way to the room every day. The elevator is one that you can expect to find in classic black & white movies with soft music playing. In our room, we got to enjoy the sight of sea eagles in the mornings as well as other marine birds in the area.
The hotel is situated at a convenient & safe location with access to popular sites in Mumbai. It is a well-maintained property and kept very clean.
All staff including, front desk, restaurant and housekeeping provided us great attention and care throughout our stay and ensured that we have a pleasant time at the hotel.
We would definitely come back again and hope that it is very soon.

Terrible experience. Rooms were okay. The staff was rude and very unhelpful. Checkin took super long, the reception asked unnecessary questions ( whether only males or females too were staying in the rooms etc. ). No visitors are allowed, we had friends coming over only for a couple of hours and who weren't staying the night, but they weren't allowed. The desk personnel were super rude too. And you'll get only 2 water bottles per day and if you need more you can pay 80 rupees for half a litre which is about 8x the normal price. They will also do their best to add various charges on top. For this price, we'd rather have booked an airbnb than 3 rooms.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your valuable time taken to tell us about your critical experience. With respect to your distasteful review written about us, we would like to inform our patrons that all our policies regarding the check-in/check-out terms & conditions relating to advances to be paid for the entire stay, policies regarding couples stay and visitors are all mentioned on our website which the guest was aware of prior to the booking. In our opinion the guest wanted a cheaper stay and found out later that he couldn’t sneak in all of his visitors as room guests as we are strict on the max occupancy of the rooms reserved. Hence as mentioned, the staff being "rude, unhelpful and check-in being super long" and also asking “unnecessary questions” as stated in the review. Additionally in our defense various charges in a hotel like mineral water, soft drinks etc. are priced higher since the service is provided in an ambience of a hotel and cannot be compared to a roadside vendor which the guest had mentioned at the desk. Upon further analyzing this review and guest profile, in our opinion he wanted a heritage, full service, comfortable stay with us on a shoe-string budget which he later came to know that he couldn’t sneak in his friends and hence even mentions an Airbnb alternative only confirming our suspicion. Nonetheless we are always ready to right the wrongs to negate your experience with us, as we greatly value your critical feedback and look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you, in the near future to the Grand Hotel, Mumbai. Regards, Grand Hotel Team

The staff are super friendly, and go out of their way to help. We stayed on the top floor (4) with a port view - note that the lift goes up to the 3rd floor and there is a winding stair to the top. A spacious room with good shower, kettle, fridge, balcony view over the busy shipyard into the smog beyond. We saw hornbills, Guruda eagles nesting 20m away, coral parakeet, and of course kites. The room has a/c and a fan, with comfy mattresses, and is full of character. Public spaces are more limited, but comfortable. Breakfast good. The hotel exudes old school charm

Dear Mr Martin, Greetings from Grand Hotel, Mumbai! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at our hotel! We truly appreciate your detailed review and are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We're delighted that our staff's friendliness and helpfulness stood out to you. Providing exceptional service is our top priority, and your feedback validates our team's efforts in creating a positive and memorable experience for our guests. It's wonderful that you appreciated the unique charm of our hotel, including the character of your spacious room on the top floor with the port view. We understand the stairs to the fourth floor might be a bit challenging, but we're glad you found the room and its amenities, like the comfortable mattresses, good shower, and convenient kettle and fridge, to your liking. We also appreciate you noting the lift access to the 3rd floor for future guests. Your description of the balcony view and the incredible wildlife sightings – hornbills, Guruda eagles, coral parakeets, and kites – is fantastic! It paints a vivid picture of the unique experience we offer, combining the bustling shipyard with the tranquility of nature. We acknowledge your feedback regarding the public spaces being limited. We are continuously looking for ways to enhance our facilities and guest experience, and your comments are valuable in this process. We're also glad you enjoyed the breakfast and felt the hotel exuded "old school charm," which is something we strive for. We aim to provide a unique atmosphere that blends classic appeal with modern comforts. Thank you again for choosing our hotel and for sharing your positive experience. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future for another enjoyable stay! Warm Regards, Grand Hotel Team

The Grand was never a luxury property, but it was comfortable and had an old-world charm. Sadly, it is neither.
The rooms are large, but that’s how they were constructed back in the day. All that is in the room just happens to be there, with not a thought for your convenience or comfort, or for aesthetics. Amenities provided are at the minimal level, as if to tick off a list with an eye on keeping costs down. There is no bar, and room service closes at 10:30 pm. The menu, common to room service and the only restaurant, is, again, minimal – in variety and taste. The housekeeping and room service staff are well meaning but appear singularly untrained.
I’m not going there again.

Dear Guest, Greetings from Grand Hotel, Mumbai! Thank you for your valuable time taken to tell us about your experience. We have since noted your feedback and are taking corrective action at our end. We are actioning the issues faced during your stay and have made amends by putting measures in place to better ourselves in order to satisfy the expectations of our customers. We are currently in the process of renovating and upgrading most of our existing rooms. We have noted your feedback and have shared your views with our team and would like to assure you that the concerns will be certainly addressed. I am sure these improvements would be visible, whenever you visit us next. On your next visit, we would be more than happy to show you a mock up room and once ready we assure to upgrade and check you into our newly exquisite, tastefully designed and finely appointed rooms. This process of renovation had been stalled owing to the unfortunate circumstances of the pandemic that had derailed our plans. This also had an impact on our staff that had been forced to be shuffled and relocated to other industries as a result our industry suffered. We can safely say as an industry now we are back in terms of travel and we are revisiting our plans to ensure the grand glory days of the past will once again be restored. We hope that we will be successful in attracting you back to us soon and rest assured if so we shall ensure all personal care as we will not provide an opportunity for you to have any discomfort during your stay with us again. Warm Regards, Shantanu Engineer

I stayed at the hotel for 4 days during which my experience was as follows :
> The check in procedure was un-necessarily long with the hotel staff enquiring about whether we have female companions staying with us which is just weird and creepy .
> We weren't allowed to invite our guests over to our rooms even for a few hours dues to some hotel policy of not allowing guests to your rooms which is the first time a hotel has done that (in my experience) . We even offered to keep their ID's at the reception to ensure they don't stay the night which was also denied by the staff. This policy of theirs is not specified at any boking platform which is misleading to the guests .
> The rooms were fairly large and spacious but the Air conditioning looked like it was installed in the late 90's and not replaced after that . The Air conditioner in our rooms couldn't be controlled by the remote or even the control panel so we had to adjust to whatever temperature it was set to before .
> The hotel was not at all a budget hotel but they still try to add various charges on top .
> The location was fairly nice since it was in the heart of the Fort area surrounded by multiple heritage buildings .
For this price you are likely to better hotels in the area and even an Airbnb for that matter .
Overall I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone at this price range .

Dear Guest, Thank you for your valuable time taken to tell us about your critical experience. We would like to point out that this is written by the same person under a different guest name from the same travelling college group. Basically, they were a group of college boys and girls travelling in a group who wanted to sneak in their female friends and to cheat the hotel as they were on a shoe string budget and wanted a luxury stay in our heritage hotel to impress their counterparts. The review response below this explains our firm stand on the situation in an elaborate way to clear the reason for this slanderous and derogatory review written about us. Unfortunately, once again, the review sites are being used as a tool to blackmail hotels when we were only upholding our policies, but since in today's world every person is armed with the review tool to post whatever they choose without verifcation as per their opinion, we have no option but to bring our stand and point of view to light! Regards, Grand Hotel Team
