This is a very friendly hotel located in Colaba, Mumbai very close to the shopping paradise of Colaba Causeaway and many eateries nearby like Delhi Darbar, Bhade Miya, Olympia, McDonalds, Leopold Cafe, The Table and many others. It is a walking distance from The Gateway of India and the Taj Hotel.
We have always found it easy to book directly with the hotel as you can get better rates than for example booking.com and Madam Arfa and her reception staff always come up trumps with us. The reception staff are very efficient and the hotel generally is well run by the Manager Mr Shaikh who is always seen busy in all the areas including the lovely dinning room which serves excellent and varied Indian and Continental breakfast, lunch and dinner; the newly opened roof top gym and the corridors of the rooms which are split on five floors.
The rooms are very cosy, on the larger side and have all the amenities that you may require. A large bed, tastefully decorated and comfortable, powerful air conditioner and good supply of hot water throughout the day and night. There is plenty of spaces for the suitcases and there are two to three settee chairs in the room as well. The bathroom and the toiletries and mineral water are supplied daily as courtesy. Rahul, the young, always smiling Room Manager goes out of his way to ensure that you have a comfortable stay and ironing boards etc are supplied without a fuss on request. He is the best dressed and immaculately dressed person in the hotel and this is very refreshing.
The dining room and reception which are on the first floor have been recently renovated and have the signature of the Manager Mr Shaikh who has been imposing his young and daring ideas to make this area beautiful and the ambience is now extra ordinary. The breakfast is very varied and sumptuous with a lot of Indian food aroma filtering throughout. Our favourite waiter Michael is a gem of a guy, courteous, well trained and always obliging and smiling.
We like coming to this lovely hotel which is very affordable and competitively priced and recommend this to our friends and family and any traveller who wishes to have a comfortable stay in Colaba in Mumbai.
Firstly, the hotel has a prime location for those wanting to stay in South Mumbai and it can be fairly reasonably priced by Mumbai standards if you are lucky with your booking. The included breakfast is excellent with lots of choices including made to order eggs. As others have noted you need to time breakfast time right because the room will not hold all the guests at one time but even when overwhelmed by a teenage boys soccer team (more of them later) the staff copied well and there were a few spare seats.
My room on the 6th floor was smallish but okay with a queen bed, coffee table and a couple of chairs, safe, kettle, empty mini fridge and very big windows. There was no stand to rest a suitcase on but one of the chairs functioned okay in that capacity. On a down side the upholstery was grubby and stained on both the chairs and bed headboard. The rest of my floor seemed to be completed inhabited by teenaged soccer players. While they weren't partying late at night they were in and out of each others' rooms and I wrongly expected that it would be noisy. I am not sure if the sound proofing is very good or if the soccer boys were quieter than anticipated but there was no noticeable noise from the halls and other rooms in the night.
The bathroom was small but functional but I was never able to get anything more than tepid water and twice it was stone cold. Perhaps the boys used up all the hot stuff.
The A/C unit worked well but the wifi was a disappointment being barely functional and often completely non-functional in my room. On the other hand it always worked well in the reception area so the problem seems to be with the location of my room rather than the system itself.
Overall, the Suba Palace is a good choice for anyone wanting to stay in Colaba particularly if you can book at a reasonably price.
The location is ideal for shopping ( specially street shopping) and for dining out with a number of good restaurants around to suit every taste.
The breakfast spread was good and clean and well laid out with variations and the room service was commendable.
The most remarkable feature about the hotel was its excellent staff service from the lift man to cleaning staff, restaurant and reception staff who were always accommodating and helpful.
The hotel is within walking distance of all the restaurants, shops, cinema and the waterfront in Colaba. Taxis are very easy to get and the Causeaway is a paradise for shoppers and of course there is a Mc Donald's within walking distance.
The rooms are very well appointed which are spacious, clean, comfortable bed, a small area for sitting with a table and two sofas, and our room had been recently upgraded and it was very evident how clean it was, especially the bathroom and the toiletries and complimentary water was a very nice gesture, but of course expected. The new AC was very powerful and we had to keep the controls at a lower level although the temperatures were in the middle thirties.
The biggest improvement we have seen is in the breakfast room which has also received a new face lift since we last visited. The breakfast is varied and mainly Indian variety, we liked the street food varieties which were on some days. It was also refreshing that different dishes were offered daily, so one did not get bored with the same food as it is our experiences in other similar hotels. Michael was always there looking after everybody with his radiant smile and always went out of the way to make our breakfast experience amazing. The cooked breakfast consists of different varieties of eggs and parathas are always on the menu. My wife was very happy to eat the Masala Dossa which is offered once a week, a rare South Indian speciality.
We met Mr Shaikh, the manager who is very charming and young. We found out that the transformation has been his idea and he has a very well trained army of staff who are always smiling and seem to be enjoying their jobs. Even the lift man is always smiling and happy to interact with you regarding comments on the weather or the local politics.
Thank you to Arfa Maam, Michael, Mr Shaikh and all the lovely staff for giving us such an enchanting experience. We look forwards to staying at this beautiful hotel again and will recommend it to our friends and family.

"For the taxi driver it was difficult to find the place, it is located in a secondary street. Make sure to show it in Google maps."Read full review
