It's on a steep hike with very little scope for a car to stop by for getting luggage down . Rooms are decent ,views are great, linen was clean . Wardrobe etc shows signs of wear and tear. Wifi works only at the lobby . No parking for cars but walkable 1.5 kms from mall road.
Though it is half an hour walk from the city centre it is Home away from home. Great food, great views and very friendly staff. Will definitely recommend. The owners were friendly and had a a good chat with them. Also the restaurant was a great place to exchange travel stories.
We came there directlly from the train station, since it was rated as "TOP" by our guidebook. Location is pretty bad, far from everything but the train station. Rooms were nice, as they are in many other places around, and prices were much higher than avarage. Staff was not super friendly. Hence, we decided to look for another place.
The Himachal Museum is no great shakes, especially given that you have to do a really hard, steep climb to get to it, but I did discover two nice restaurants in the process. The first is the Peterhof, where I had a beer and French fries (you can find the review in Tripadvisor) and the other was Spars Lodge, where I had lunch. Spars is a really neat little place, with lovely décor and a beautiful view. It is essentially a hotel, but the restaurant at the lobby (if one can use such a word for such tiny lodge) is an attraction in itself. When we were there, there was another Indian family from outside, as well some foreign residents of the lodge, who were having coffee. The place serves up interesting fare like smoked trout and pork chops (which I had, with a delicious side of…
This place is amazing. The view, entrance and the location is worth every penny you spent to get there. Service is good too. Rooms are small but cozy and the woodwork is amazing. The walk from Chaura Maidan till this point is the real beauty.
Ok, it's expensive compared to the rest of India, but so is all the places in Shimla. Our room with a double bed (comfy) and a double-bed-sofa (not so comfy) were tidy and not so small. Shower and toilet was clean and ok. 2300 rs/night. The view from the room is to die for! The owner is very helpfull. He helped us book and change taxis even when he had his free time off. The combined lobby and restaurant is spacious with a breathtaking view. It is close to "the Vice Roy lodge" (worth a visit) and the museum of art. You'll have to walk alot up and down, but it's a nice path. The hotel is located in a not so busy area, wich can be a relief, but you'll have to take a cab if you wanna go to the ridge, the mall, the Hanuman and Kali temples etc. It's fairly close to the railway…
We arrived in Shimla around 8am from Delhi. The overnight bus ride was fairly comfortable. Not having made our hotel bookings, we decided to check out Spars Lodge, a budget hotel recommended by Lonely Planet. On alighting from the bus, we took a cab to the hotel which was situated off the main bazaar area, up a steep hill. The man at the counter confirmed he had a room available, so we paid off the cab and carried our luggage into the main area of the lodge, which was apparently also the dinning area. We waited here patiently, while the manager kept himself busy with, well I really do not know what! After about 15 minutes, he picked up the telephone and called someone. He then confirmed with the person on the other end if he was arriving the same day or later. He then put the…
We stayed here for three nights and were not impressed at all. We got the cheapest room they offer (1409 RS/$23 US - not cheap at all but same prices all over Shimla) and were given a room three floors downstairs from the front desk. The room itself was comfortable (terrible views though) but the bathroom was stinky and the shower did not work. They fixed the shower but then there was hot water for only 2 minutes! We asked to be moved to a functional room and were transferred to a much nicer one. However, the next morning we were told that the room we were in now was 2000RS! WHAT? How can you move your guests to a different room and not inform them of the price difference? Moreover, how do you expect to charge more when your guests are being moved because their bathroom doesn't…
