We recently stayed in the spar lodge ( about two weeks ago ) and were a little disappointed by it. I can imagine that in the heat of summer that this is a stunning lodge and would be well worth the trip and the money to stay there. However, we went in the winter and were expecting a cosy mountain retreat. We arrived to an incredibly cold lodge and were greeted by two inexperienced young men.Shortly afterwards, the owners ( presumably) arrived and positioned themselves beside the wood burner which was the only source of heat in the lodge. For the day that we stayed there, we had to keep on many layers ( as did the staff ), we didn't have much access to the wood burner and there was no heater in our room. The room was so cold that we slept in 5-6 layers of clothes. It was so unbearable we had to leave the next day. We got the distinct impression that they were unhappy that we were leaving early but we felt very unwelcome despite being the only guests there.
The poor employees were also freezing cold and were left unsupervised during the evening and next morning. We were trying to get a 10 o'clock bus and it took almost40 minutes to check out so we nearly missed it. To be fair, they tried their best under the circumstances but they had very little support from their boss. They wanted us to hang around to speak to the boss, we just wanted to leave.

Overall our mountain retreat from the noise of the Indian plains was a disappointment - not because of the weather but because the lodge did not seem equipped to deal with guests in the winter. Simla itself was charming, sadly the owners of this lodge were not.

This is India. This is India far away from a metropolis. This is a lodge that is very inexpensive. Given those facts, Spars Lodge is amazing. The rooms are neat, simple and clean. The staff is helpful, though perhaps not as warm and perky as Westerners are used to. The food is prepared well. The sitting area is informal and inviting.

Yes there is no top sheet on the bed and yes the towel had seen better days (it was clean, just kinda worn out) but refer to my first points above. If you want luxury accommodations, pay for them. Otherwise if you want a comfortable and inviting lodge that will help you stretch your rupees, Spars Lodge is definitely a good choice.

This place has a good view, rooms are clean and not too expensive, the way up there very steep and breakfast was ok. We ate at the Cecil, had Indian wine and spoiled ourselves before we went into the Kinnaur valley. I would stay there again. Generally I find it ver y hard to trust reviews written by Indians. They are either to snobbish and have too high expectations or have no clue about hotels and react with exuberant enthousiasm. As a wide travelled Swiss, I would give this house my praise and would easily have my cat stay here, who is very picky when it comes to stranger's houses!

Spars Lodge is located is a calm and quiet place near the Prasar Bharti Doordarshan Set-up in Shimla and just in front of ITBP Headquarters. There is no parking available in hotel as the hotel itself is very small with hardly 4-5 rooms available. The place is quiet, offers picturesque view and away from the main busy road of Shimla. But the Hotel itself has very less to offer. The rooms are basic but neat and clean. There is no Breakfast buffet and the direct pricing of hotel is very high which do not justifies the stay in any aspect. Though one can chose to book from travel websites at one third of the prices. Its okay in terms of a short stay. One will face hardship in parking the car nearby.

We came there directlly from the train station, since it was rated as "TOP" by our guidebook. Location is pretty bad, far from everything but the train station. Rooms were nice, as they are in many other places around, and prices were much higher than avarage. Staff was not super friendly. Hence, we decided to look for another place.

This place is amazing. The view, entrance and the location is worth every penny you spent to get there. Service is good too. Rooms are small but cozy and the woodwork is amazing. The walk from Chaura Maidan till this point is the real beauty.

There are definitely hotels in the area with better value for money. Bathroom was dirrty and old (even for Indian standards), hotel is quite far from the city centre and the owner is a grumpy man. Do not recommend this place!

Worst place in terms of customer service. The manager is aggressive and impolite. They lure people making online bookings showing low prices for rooms but once you reach there, they will offer yhe worst possible room so that you are bound to upgrade

Came here with my wife on 28 May, 2014 based on Lonely Planet recommendation. Arrived at hotel to find front door open but nobody on premises. Sat in lobby for 15-minutes until a disgruntled looking man and three young men suddenly appeared through the kitchen door. Asked for a double room. I was show two initially. One on the bottom floor with view of a rusting corrugated roof for 1,200 Rp per night. Windows opened out onto a debris pile. Bathroom leaking and poorly maintained. Shower did not work. I asked to see another room which was quite nice with great views and much better as far as maintenance. I was offered this room for 2,000 Rp total per night which I agreed to and asked for the room for 3 nights. The manager then told me that he had misquoted the price and that is was now 2,200 per night. A ridiculous scam. Manager is as bad as they come. My complaints were met with smirks and rolling eyes. The young men are as eager as puppies to help with bags. After that they watch cricket on the lobby television. I took the lower room (3 floors down) for one night planning to find a better hotel in town.

WIFI only works in lobby and not in rooms. No place to hang clothing. CRT television. No water glasses, shampoo or soap. Cracks in bathroom electrical outlets. No top sheet. Cigarette burns in bedspread. No breakfast included but room service is available. See photo of menu. Be careful of additional taxes and service charges which are not included in pricing.

Hotel is at top of steep hill and far from town center. How this became a Lonely Planet 'Top Pick' is beyond me. Common areas are very clean and well maintained; Unfortunately this housekeeping does not extend to the rooms. I would not recommend this hotel to anybody. Very poor value.
