We had booked for two rooms for our family of four at this Hotel that was run by the India Tourism Development Corporation Limited [Govt. of India undertaking]. The booking was made through a recognised online hotel booking service and the voucher stated the exact amount we would be expected to pay.

CHECK-IN & THE FRONT DESK: On arriving to the Hotel late at night as weary travellers, we were in for a shock as we were told that the rate we would be paying was almost £100.00 more than what we were supposed to as stated in the voucher. This was apparently because of additional taxes in Delhi. In short they were not interested in the booking voucher that I had which clearly stated the cost with the taxes. After getting the duty manager involved we settled for an amount nearing the voucher. Surprise! surprise! - I was charged 10 times the amount on my credit card by the addition of a '0' - easy to miss when you are tired and fed up. Realised this as soon as I went to the room and had to come down and rectify the error, They just muttered an apology in their breath and proceeded to cancel that transaction and make another one. Generally rude and non-caring attitude of the front desk staff.

THE ROOM: Quite a large room with twin beds - when I had requested for a double bed. AC was virtually non-existent in a hot city like Delhi. Added to our woes the room had quite a few mosquitoes buzzing around. This was a time when the threat from Dengue fever was at a peak in Delhi. We asked room service for a mosquito repellent and they came with an electric bat to fry the mosquitoes! The quality of the sleep was not great.

BREAKFAST: Mediocre and oily - bordering on tasteless. Staff in the restaurant were good.

LOCATION: Good

SECURITY: Excellent

WiFi: Weak signal and requires a new logon everyday. Have to get the password from the front desk.

CHECK-OUT: The saga once again started and we were asked to pay up additional amounts. My flight time was nearing and I reluctantly paid the excess charge just to get out of this Hotel and then took up with the company I made the booking upon my return, who are now dealing with this issue.

My sincere advise to people who are thinking of booking a room in this hotel is to be careful and expect to pay more than what you had agreed to. Check your credit card transactions. It is a Government of India run Hotel and therefore I could feel that the staff are not really interested in building customer relationships.

I stayed in Delhi on a business tour for one day and stayed in Janpath Hotel. I usually prefer this hotel because it is bang opposite my office and very close to business district of Cannaught Place and has good security and parking space. Hotel was renovated couple of years back and renovated wing is certainly much better than other rooms. Do not expect much service as this being government hotel. Breakfast is pathetic but rooms are of big size with its old AC. The cooling power is good and rooms have 46 inches LCD TV. The water in the toilet is hard water, almost salty, directly pumped from the sea. There is a private restaurant in the hotel which is better but it overcharges! There are many eating places nearby from the hotel including Sarvana Bhavan which is great! Overall hotel is good for short stay by businessman who does not need much service and prefers to eat out!

We prebooked the hotel online with Asia.com. When we arrived at the receptionist, it didn't too bad. Once we got to the third floor where our room was, the ambience resemble that of the under funded 1950s Lunatic Asylum. The room was horrendous - windows were covered with wooden board. The electric sockets were hanging out. No hot water at all despite the fact that the staff came up twice to fix it. The staff was aggressive and all they wanted was charging extras as much they can. Be very careful before you pay the bills! A deperate hotel - only to be used in the crisis. Not recommended to stay more than one night!

My grievances with this hotel are as follows:

1. The staff are extremely unhelpful and are not prepared to give you any information or assistance that they cannot charge you for. As it was my first ever visit to India I found this to be the most frustrating thing about this hotel. I wanted to travel from Delhi to Agra and asked 7 or 8 members of staff how I could do so. They all refused to assist and directed me to the travel desk. The gentleman at the travel desk explained that he could only arrange a tour to Agra for a minimum of four people and that he could not provide me with any further information on how to get to Agra. I repeatedly asked numerous reception staff and the concierge if I could take a train or a coach and how I could purchase a ticket but they responded that they did not know. Only on my last day at approximately 11:00 am (when I was due to check-out at 12:00) did a lady assist me with searching for trains to Agra. One of the same people who a day earlier had told me they couldn’t help! Why did I not search for this information on the internet like a normal tourist would I hear you ask? Well, that leads me on to gripe number 2.

2. The Business Centre is only open between 10:00 am and 6:00pm but when I tried to use the facilities there, the internet was not working. I asked the reception desk to send someone to fix the problem but after 20 minutes of waiting I gave up. I marched to the reception and demanded to be given internet access (as I had to research trains/coaches to Agra). I was directed to a staff computer in their back office. The monitor had a Britney Spears wall paper (very professional, I know). I was charged 195 rupees for half an hour of internet usage. Although the hotel advertises that it has wifi, this was also unavailable throughout my stay.

3. Staff at the restaurant and the cleaners expect (and ask) for tips when they have done absolutely nothing and have delivered appalling service. I found a strange gentleman lurking near my room every time I went in or out. He gave me a salute every time he saw me. This made me feel very uncomfortable in the hotel. He accompanied me into my room on two occasions without me giving him permission to do so, so that he could tell me that he had cleaned my room. He then stood there and waited for me to give him a tip. Whilst waiting for a taxi in the downstairs lobby I ordered a can of coke. Although the waiter took 25 minutes to bring this to me (and did not even pour it into a glass) he asked for a tip when he presented me with the bill.

4. The television in my room took approximately 20 minutes to start up from the moment I pressed the 'on' button. Only 1 plug socket (other than the ones for the TV and fridge) were working although I'm not sure why. Someone also kept switching off the fridge whenever I left my room, which I also found very strange.

5. The waiters in the coffee room where breakfast is served were incredibly rude. A waiter snatched a glass from right next to me, to give to another guest, without so much as even looking at me to see if I was happy for him to do so.

In conclusion, this hotel is rubbish.

Being an old property, the rooms were huge. Even the bathroom was huge.

Bathroom window was of designed frosted glass and I was sure people could peep from the rooms in the other wing of the building.

Room Service and House Keeping were surprisingly prompt. Front desk, however, was a bit sluggish.

The hotel badly needs upkeep.

The Janpath Hotel, has emerged as a classical hotel after a recent make-over one that breathes and spells magnificence, opulence, grandeur and friendly warmth, right from the patio to lobby to restaurants and rooms. It has a superbly convenient location, situated in the heart of the city, in proximity to business and government centers and just off popular Janpath market. The entire floor corridors have been converted into ‘Art galleries’, displaying the best of contemporary and classic Indian art.

I strongly feel that one good thing that happened due to CWG is the total turn around of this hotel.

The services were great ,room amenities were superb. Overall our stay was fabulous.

Staff at this hotel are slow, rude, inefficient and often get things wrong. Be prepared to have lots of patience to wait for anything and everything, including checking in and checking out, room service, restaurant meals, or getting them to fix the invariable problems with the rooms.

The rooms are relatively well-equipped and of a decent size. But fittings and finishings are poor and cleanliness is average. There was incessant leaks through the glass walls and because of that the corridors smelled funny. Water coming out of faucets seemed more cloudy and brownish than water in other hotels in India I have stayed at.

In sum, I have had better rooms, better facilities and better service at hotels with tariffs that were half that you pay here.

Do not recommend. The only benefit is the location. But then there are many hotels in the city with good location. So I still do not recommend.

Hello Mr. Raju, Greetings!!!
