I wanted budget accommodation but didn't want to compromise too much on comfort and cleanliness. I have to say this hotel was exactly what I was after. They supplied us with complimentary bottled water everyday which was extremely useful and their room service was also very efficient and the food good quality.

The staff were very friendly and keen to help if needed. I didn't experience any bugs or issues of that sort whilst staying there. We also booked a tour of the Agra and Jaipur through the hotel and we enjoyed it very much - the taxi driver we were given was lovely and we were advised how best to fit everything in to our short trip.

In short: great budget accommodation, friendly, helpful and clean.

The rooms are fine and the service is absolutely excellent!! The staff are very helpful, kind and will go out of their way to help. Minna the cleaning manager is a star and everything is possible in The Raj Hotel and India ;).
Prices here are very fair and cheaper than most other places in Paharganj, New Delhi and are you staying for a longer time period better prices can be arranged.
We recommand this hotel to all staying in this area. It´s close to Connaught Place and a Metro Station.

The Raj hotel is located in busy Arakashan Road and is quite close to New Delhi train station. The staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel was reasonable value for money and the rooms at the rear of the hotel were a better option as they were significantly quieter. We booked the Raj for three nights at the start of our trip and a second time between destinations. On our first visit, the breakfast was provided at the hotel and the second time it was provided at a sister hotel, which was a short walk The breakfasts were reasonable and sufficient for our needs. Overall we were happy with the Raj and would recommend them to travellers to New Delhi.

We arrived at Raj after reading fairly good reviews and seeing the photos, into the grimy reception area. The taxi driver who took us there told us to be very careful as it is a bad area and it is dangerous for us to go out. We arrived 1 hour before we were due to check in. We were told that our room was not ready so he had allocated us another room a few metres away in his other hotel we asked for tea to be bought to the room. We were sent to another very dim grimy reception. We paid on arrival and was escorted to our room. I was horrified as I walked up the stairs as small bags of litter and foodstuffs were strewn along the skirting boards and in corners. I froze when I was in the room when I saw it, it was cold damp and like a dungeon from the Middle Ages . I told my husband we couldn’t stay there and he proceeded to make another booking elsewhere. A moment later knock came on the door and a man was there bringing tea in a flask it was very dirty and disgusting he asked for money, my husband told him we had paid downstairs at reception but he didn’t seem to believe us and exacerbated an already stressful situation. We then went to reception and advised the receptionist that we were going as the room was terrible.. we were not offered our money back. I was scared while waiting in reception while waiting for the taxi there seemed to be a hostile atmosphere. The room looked nothing like the photos on the website, this was terrible beyond words.

Hotel was grubby and in need of a refurbishment. On arrival there was a full ashtray in my room (I pointed this out and the staff member took the ashtray and placed it under the table, rather than remove it!) and the room needed a deep clean, curtains and walls were stained and dirty and the phone was filthy. The room was also very dusty. I had to request a towel and toilet paper as none were in the room. Staff were abrupt in manner at reception and there was a feeling of being hustled to book other services. Staff knocked and tried to enter the room on a number of occasions, rather than waiting for the door to be opened.

There is lots of noise from the street (there is no sound proofing) and I would suggest bringing earplugs to counteract this. The aircon unit was also too noisy to use. The door to my room also looked as though it had been forced at some point.

Room service was poor, a set menu was not delivered as ordered and they tried to charge extra for items I had not ordered.

The hotel also uploaded a fake review on booking.com in my name.

we asked for a taxi pick-up from the airport and when we arrived at the hotel we were charged triple what the airport taxis cost! we were then treated very rudely as we are a mix raced couple and were told they do not usually allow this in their hotel! i was so shocked as we have never been treated like this before. we ended up staying for 2 nights and although the room was ok they were doing building work outside our room every afternoon which made it impossible to relax. i have stayed in other hotels on arakashan road which are all much better and with much nicer staff!

We lasted 5 minutes in this hotel. The rooms smelled of stale ciggarettes the tv did not work and the rooms were very basic despite booking an Execuctive room. I will always give allowances for being in India but after 5 years of stayin in India this was the poorest Hotel ever. In fairness to the Manager he moved us to a sister Hotel over the road which was a little better. One major positive however was Rafiq the Travel Desk manager who organised Delhi and Agra tours including Cars Taxis Guides and Airport pick ups which all delivered as promised. Thanks Rafiq.

The website pictures are not demonstrating the reality. We arrived there, we could not believe what waited for us. In less than 3 minutes after check in; we checked out with the speed of the light!!
The cleaner is a little boy with ripped clothes, who is doing "some" cleaning up and down the stairs, he will ask for money as many times he will see you; he won`t even leave the room, until you won`t give him again something.
What`s with the bucket in that extremely mediocre room you call bathroom? Half of the tiles and walls were bathing in bacteria's and black mould!
What`s up with that "security" on the door of the room? The floors of the room were full of footprints from prior our arrival. No AC, only old smells caught up in this expired room. The location of the place is shocking. The staff..well, most of them were busy staring.

I am a 20 year old Australian who was travelling to New Delhi alone for the first time and in all honesty I wasn't too impressed with the service,

When I got to the hotel it was 2 am in the morning and one of the men insisted on bringing my bag up to the room - less than 20 metres away up an elevator might I add which I was fine with considering I had been at airports all day until the man asked me for money for bringing my bag up. I get that tipping seems to be a thing in India - I just felt that it was really rude considering the time and the fact that he carried it up an elevator.

Due to thee area that the hotel was in, I didn't really have a choice for food for dinner other than eating at the kitchen at the hotel. The food was extremely average and I was really worried about getting sick from the food, I ate dinner here every night and unfortunately on my last night I ate Rogan josh that was cooked in the kitchen and I got really sick with Delhi Belly... Still even 8 days later I am still really sick and it ruined the rest of my holiday.

Also, each day due worries about being a single traveller, I ordered taxis from the hotel to drive me around everyday and paid about 6500-8500 rupees per day, Because of the fact I had the same driver for 2 days in a row he told me that the reason it was more expensive was because the hotel was taking a cut out of the fee for the booking so effectively I was paying the hotel a tip and well as for the taxi fair- not cool.

ESPECIALLY when one day I decided to go to Rishikesh which was a great day despite the fact that I paid for an air-conditioned car. The 19 year old driver 'Ram' did not use the air-conditioning once during the 14 hours of driving (7 hours each way because of crazy Indian traffic) and it was a 48 degree day! Also the car broke down 4 times, like literally 3 on the way there once on the way back to the point where he had to push the car off the road and use my water all 4 times to put into the car.

Also, and what disgusted me the most is the fact that I told him I was married and he still kept trying to hold my hand! At one point he actually pulled the car over and tried to kiss me and I went crazy and started screaming at him! I was meant to get back to the hotel around 7pm that night at 10pm I still wasn't back. The hotel called Ram on his mobile and he screened the call at first and when they rung back I said who is it and he said the hotel and finally he picked up and passed me to the phone to which I said I was still alive. When I got back to the hotel I wanted to complain about the treatment that day and what had happened but I just got a quick greeting and they went back to doing their thing - no one wanted to listen...

I honestly feel that when you are travelling alone and being a 20 year old Australian female you expect a bit more than this. I hate being screwed over money wise and I really hate the fact that I got sick off the food - Delhi belly is awful and I really wish I hadn't eaten the food but because of being located in a scary part of New Delhi I was told not to go out at night just in case something bad happened. I overheard a number of others staying at the hotel complaining about the food because the waiter didn't speak English and the orders kept being wrong.

the Room itself in the hotel was okay despite the fact there wasn't any toilet paper or towels etc. But the elevator actually broke the day after I got there which made life in 50 degree heat even worse. And I swear the mattress was made of stone.

I probably would say stay somewhere much nice - India is a cheap place so you can do a lot nicer than this on a budget
