If one is looking for a 5 star venue the Jaffna YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) is certainly not what you should be looking at. After all this is for young men, usually on work errands. On the other hand if one is in a remote little town and you notice the World Renowned Inverted Red Triangle with horizontal Blue band with YMCA in thick white letters one at least feels nice, wow a Christian Organisation? Yes it is. Clean room, laundered bed sheets and towels. Tea or coffee from the 'canteen' a busy Table Tennis Table. And the 'house boy' who will fetch any food you describe from a nearby restaurant, Is this place luxurious, of course not? Is it enough for a comfortable stay. Yes! very much so. Thank you YMCA you are beautiful. How does it compare with the far more expensive ad lovely YMCA in Singapore? Well one cannot compare 'apples and oranges' can one?…
YMCA in Jaffna! Sehr günstiges sauberes Doppelzimmer, Gemeinschaftsbad teilweise unsauber, Toiletten sehr kritisch. Gute Lage an der KandyRoad. Hat mehrere Tageszeitungen und Kleines Restaurant um die Ecke.
We sleep here three night. Reading the other reviews we were a little scared but the place is not so bad. The room are very clean. Better to take the room far from road, more quite... The shared bathroom is ok...the cleanliness depend to other guest. It is clean every day. Three toilet and three shower plus a man toilet. The position is not so central but all is walking distance. The canteen is nice and serve cheep and good arilankan food (rice and curry, kotthu, short eats...). So the place is recommended for budget travellers.
Maybe this is the cheaper options in Jaffna, I pay 800rs for a twin room with shared unisex bathroom. The room was ok but there is no mosquito net(there is a lot Mosquitos in the night), the bathroom is like old fashion, not so clean. I have been stay in many guesthouse at different area in Sri Lanka, this is consider overpriced for 800rs. You have to spend at least 30mins walk to town, 15mins to train station, or you can take a minibus heading to town for 15-20rs. If you wish to eat, there is a local restaurant just beside the main entrance. The foos is ok, but chicken curry is kinda pricey for me, they charge 150rs for just small portion.
If you are traveling on a budget and you think a room is mostly to sleep and to leave your bag on a safe place, then YMCA will be perfect for you. We had a good sleep, a good feeling and a good welcoming. The atmosphere is catholic and simple. You can read the newspaper in the hall. The value is very nice.
YMCA is no doubt the cheapest accomodation you can find in Jaffna, or I can probably say in Sri Lanka! I paid 900rps for a twin room. You get what you pay, so do expect the following things - 1. no sound proof for the room: I could hear other tenants opened/closed their door, walking around 2. people smoked in the room and I could smell it when I passed by their room. 3. the bathrooms (unisex; cold shower only) and toilets (squatting only) were terrible! If you are a solo female traveller, I will suggest you to get another place. The main issue is the bathrooms. The wooden doors of the bathrooms looked like 50 years old and broken. Most of the customers were local guys. In order to avoid any misunderstanding, I only took shower after the peak hour. I wouldn't say I was unsafe, but I didn't want to take risk. What is good about this place? The staff. When I stepped in, it was raining like crazy. They provided all the assistance I needed.…
This is no doubt the 'Cheapest Accommodation In Jaffna.''', Its rooms are in good condition, but bathrooms really need to be made better. The place does not have own restaurant or eatary, but the cheap one is next to main gate. More decent restaurant are in close proximity at very walkable distance.
