In 1892 entrepreneur Francisco Piriá bought 2,700 hectares of land which he planted with trees, olive groves, pine trees & tobacco. In 1897 he built his home, the Castillo de Piriá. A year later his plantations were destroyed by locusts. In 1898 he undertook a trip to Europe, from which his inspiration for the tourist use of the Uruguayan coast derived. In 1905 he built the first Grand Hotel, the hotel Piriápolis, next door. Five years later a promenade modelled on the French Riviera was built. In 1912 he began the auction of plots of land in Piriápolis, after which the town began to grow. In 1930 Piriá inaugurated this second Grand Hotel modelled like the great hotels of the Côte d'Azur. At the huge cost of 5 million pesos the luxury Argentino hotel was realised. Piriá brought lingerie from Italy, fine tableware from Germany, glassware from Czechoslovakia and Thonet furniture from Austria. The Argentino hotel has 6 floors, a front of 120m and was conceived for 1,200 guests. In the interbellum the Argentino hotel was one of the most luxury hotels in the world. The ground floor hosted a large restaurant and thalassotherapy facilities. At present the Argentino Hotel & Casino is a shadow of its former grandeur. Today Piriápolis hosts middle-class Uruguayans and few tourists. In South America the place for the rich & famous now has been taken over by Cabo del Este. The Argentino hotel is charming but it loses the fights against decay. Many rooms are closed. In off-season the hotel only opens at weekends. We had a enchanting double room at the first floor. We felt like being in a 19-fourties movie. The spacious entrance room had twin beds, a wardrobe, and a renovated bathroom with washbasin, toilet, bidet and shower. The large second room had a very good double bed, parquet, desk and stairs, a walk-in dressing, and Thonet furniture from the late 19-twenties. The window-door opens to the enormous first floor balcony that has a magnific view. Complimentary bathrobes and free Wi-Fi Internet. We enjoyed the heated baths and the nice garden. A simple continental breakfast is served at the restaurant. The atmosphere in the Argentino hotel is of a forgotten era. We had a nice stay. Highly recommended.

Spent a couple of nights here upon my return to the country after more than 22 years. It was an amazing experience. The aura in the Hotel takes you back to the 1930s when it was built. The service is excellent and I would definitely return.

This hotel is simply beautiful. Like being in a 1940s movie. Of course it’s not a modern minimalistic kind of a hotel, if that’s what you are looking for, you should know better and choose another kind of acommodation (and another destination, I might add). This hotel has a magnific view, incredible pieces of art (vitreaux, furniture, fabrics) and a fairy tale architecture. But it’s not perfect or brand new, since the hotel is huge and ancient. If you can’t see the charme in that, then don’t come. It’s very clean, the service is perfect, the food is awesome (and a lot), and it had many atractions. You don’t have time to get bored. It’s my favourite hotel 💚

This hotel probably used to be a spectacular hotel maybe in the 50s and 60s, when hotels were like a novelty and not many people could have afforded to stay in them. However today, almost everyone stays in hotels.... The issue with this hotel is that the furnishings are still the same as in the 60s and 70s. Old uncomfortable beds with harsh spring mattresses! Very uncomfortable. The rooms are very old and tarnished. Needs major refurbishment. This is generally the issue with many Latin American hotels....very little repair and refurbishment is done, resulting in a shabby appearance coupled with third world hospitality & service....one gets a "rip-off" (particularly with the excessive amount one has to pay for a room). Won't be coming back here.

This may have been a grand hotel 20 or 30 years ago (or more), but no more. The Argentino Hotel desperately needs a probably much too expensive total renovation as EVERYTHING is run down, starting with the guest rooms, hallways, dining and meeting rooms, elevators, etc. There appeared to be total lack of maintenance as there was flaking paint everywhere from walls and ceilings, missing plaster and even light fixtures contained at least one burned out bulb. It was if management wanted to get one last season from this hotel before closing it down. I was offered an extremely small room with a double bed, mini bathroom and a musty odor for U$D145. Having declined that, I was offered the same room with dinner for two for U$S140. I have seen better "backpacker hostels" at a tenth that rate. I can only guess that most of their guests stay there as it reminds them of stays during their childhood. There are better hotels in Piriapolis at much less cost. We stayed elsewhere ---

Dear Friends We want to say hello and thank you for the time you have taken to send us these lines. Must have been a very nice hotel when opened in the 1930`s. Today a sleeping beauty with most parts in old genuine stile. Hotel owned by government, which is a guarentee that the building will keep its original style. A very nice area is the main lobby, with its stairs and special window in coloured glass

OK first for the good bits, great location, beautiful building. Booked for 1 night two rooms at a price of 218 US dollars per night per room. The photographs on the website looked amazing and is rated 4 stars, so we thought we would splash out and enjoy the luxury. Checked in , nice staff, taken to the third floor, halls dark and empty of any furniture or pictures etc. Shown two rooms the first one was had not been cleaned or made up, carpets dirty, the bathroom needed to be refurbished it was all very depressing and tatty not in a nice way. The fridges are full sized and empty, old TVs, peeling paintwork no pictures or colour in the rooms at all. We asked if they had any better rooms, reception were called and replied that they had just noticed we booked superior rooms so got taken to another floor. The hot water took a full ten minutes to come through, not knowing this we had cold showers. Same thing really! The hotel was full of families with children playing in the hallways late into the night. Breakfast was crowded with not enough food offered for the number of people there at any one time, noisy and not worth the bother. When we questioned the quality of the rooms we were told this is an antique hote and the furniture and fittings are in keeping. It was built in 1930 so not that old then, the room furniture was not of this era. We are a very well travelled group it is perfectly possible to update a building in keeping with its age it just requires some reinvestment of profits. Such a shame to see such a lovely building in such decline. The lobby area and public rooms were amazing though a bit threadbare. All in all not the experience we would have liked. Would never return. I cannot believe it has a 9.1 rating on the website we booked through.

I have stayed at the Argentino from 1962 till 1992. It is in need of a "face lift" and it has gone thru many, but the history and its glory surely surpass the fact that there's no "flat tv in the rooms". If you take the time to inspect the details of the architecture and craftsmanship, you have a beautiful hotel with a lot of character! I'm finally going back to Uruguay early next year and my first destination? The Argentino Hotel for a long vacation!

We checked out of our perfectly comfy 3* down the beach to treat ourselves to some 4* luxury. The Argentino delivers on the grandness, but it is so run down and rough around the edges. The staff were helpful. However, more of them at the desk should be able to speak English. The restaurants were very good and efficiently run. The spa and swimming pool had a chilled atmosphere but had a lot of cracked tiles and rusting bits. The carpet in our room was stained and frayed. We didn't want to open the big windows because of all the bird droppings that collected on the window sill. There were some great evening entertainment events, too. I would have also expected a 4* to also have a flat screen television. The Argentino is the grand dame of Piriapolis, however she needs a serious facelift to warrant the high price.
