“Excellent Home stay facing the Valley”

I have stayed in the B's Hive (19th-22nd, August,2017). It was a leisure trip with my Family. Please read through their description of property and especially about their location and parking to keep your expectations close to the reality.

Rooms :
> Rooms was road facing and was on the first floor. Rooms size was compact but not small. Check Photos.
> All Linen were very clean and room look pretty nice. I took some photos which are attached.
> Rooms interiors are good neatly done
> Enough storage space to keep your luggage's
> Reasonably big sit out area was there which allows you to sit and enjoy the valley view
> Hot water was available 24*7
> Toilet was western, clean and tidy.
> Toilet had towels and all basic supplies like Soap, Shampoo, towels, tissues etc
> TV was available with cable connection. Its a normal portable TV and was good enough.
> Two power sockets were available to charge your devices
> Kettle was available, Ready made coffee powder, milk whitener, sugar was available too.

Pros
1. Valley view (Only for Terrace Rooms)
2. Value for Money
3. Decent interiors and amenities
4. Spacious sit out

Cons
1. Two singe beds were merged to make a master bed. Since I went with kids, I found it bit uncomfortable.

Food :
> Food is served on request. You need to order well in advance.
> The serve both veg and non-veg on request.
> Menu choice is limited but food is good. Home made taste and doesn't upset your stomach.
> Heard food being served late but I guess thats only on long weekends when they are running full house. We went in normal weekened and stayed from Saturday to Tuesday. Food served on time all days.
> Coffee, Tea & Milk served on request. We tried both coffee and tea and it was very good.
> Don't go by the food prices on menu card in the room, guess they are old. Prices were higher than whats mentioned in the menu card but worth it. Saves your time to hunt down good hotel and being convinient too.
> If you are a foodie, you may want to explore other options.
> One session the idly served wasn't cooked well, they checked for feedback and corrected when they served next time. Didn't charge for idly's that we complained about. Good gesture.

Pros
1. Home made south indian taste
2. Saves time venturing out for hotels near by
3. Served on time when ordered in advance
4. Serves both veg and non veg

Cons
1. Limited menu depending on their occupancy

Service :
> Service was good all three days we stayed. Several reviews in the past indicated issues on this part but we found it to be ok. Courtesy, visiting them in normal weekend and guess head count was manageable for them.
> Check in / Check out process was quick and smooth
> Maheswari, who manages the place is very prompt in taking your orders for food and addressing your other needs. They served everything according to our requirement.
> Care taker is available round the clock in the premises.

Location :
> Located in a proper residential area.
> Not much of shops or hotels near by 500 meters. You got walk 5-10 minutes to near by shops.
> Once booked, the confirmation mail carried important information about their location and parking. This helped to keep our expectations close to reality and was helpful.
> Located in a area as soon as you enter Kodaikanal and much before Kodaikanal lake
> Suits for people who travel on their own vehicles or cabs

Parking :
> Very important to note if you are travelling in your own car. They are located in a narrow residential street.
> Access to this street where property located is quite steep decline. park you car in the approach road if you are not an expert.
> Parking in approach road makes more sense since the street where the property is located has lot of cars of residents. If you bring your car close to their property, then you may get stuck by cars parked behind. No u turns possible and space for only one car can be driven.
> Approach road had plenty of parking space and we didn't have any issues finding a place. May be its not the case in long or extended weekends when crowd is more.
> Parking in approach road is safe.

Cons
> If the care taker not available, carrying luggage from approach road is bit of hassle. Its a easy 3-4 minute walk or 300-350 meters. For us, care taker helped

Driving
> Steep roads (climbing up)from property location to main road leading to Kodai lake. Once you reach main road its fine. Experts need not worry, first time drivers to keep this in mind.

Cost
> Very reasonable and value for money

Room Tips
> Terrace room with valley view is the best bet. Ground floor rooms doesn't give you full valley view.

Tips about Kodaikanal
> Having visited in the past too, I realize coming here in a normal weekend or weekdays gives more memorable experience. Less traffic+Less Chaos=Peaceful to go around
> One must visit Berijam Lake for an unique experience. Berijam Lake is not that great but access roads to this lake provides good experience driving in isolated forest and seeing good landscapes. Good half day was spent visiting this place and lots of points to click photos.
Things to note if you want to visit Berijam lake.
1. Limited number of cars only allowed every day, we were told about 50-75 cars only allowed.
2. You need to go in advance to beat the que depending on the day you visit. Weekends i heard is always tough to get permission due since too many turn up.
3. First check post is where the que starts. This is two kms before the Berijam Lake entry check post. Vehicles start queing up here as early as 7 am depending the day.
4. Once you are in the que, you need to wait until 9 am. Forest dept staff opens this check post by 9 am.
5. Vehicles then needs to start driving towards the Berijam lake check post.
6. Once you reach the Berijam lake check post, park your car in the que. Do not overtake since you'll end up coming back to the que.
7. Forest dept staff allows cars one by one. Rs.200/- was charged as entry fee at the check post and a form was given.
8. Carry a pen and ID proof to fill this form.
9. Once we pay entry fee and form collected in check post (from car itself, no need to get down till this), then we drive 5-10 meters to park the car.
10. One must stop car, fill up the form provided and make an entry in their register before driving ahead.
11. Attached the form with information on sight seeing points and timings. One must come back to the starting point by 3.30 PM.
12. No shops, no cell phone signals enroute or in Berijam Lake.
13. We were advised to be cautious about animals but didn't encounter any.
14. Forest dept operate their own vans too. They charge about Rs.300/head, one can park their vehicle in Moir point and use their vehicle to visit Berijam lake. If you come late(i.e., after permitting the 50-75 cars) this is your only choice.
> Mushroom soup which was available in road side shop near guna caves was out of the world. It was awesome, try it.
> Keep your expectations when you go around following places
1.Guna caves - Nothing to see, access to the actual caves is blocked and view point made before the caves. We couldn't the caves at all may be fogs were hiding it.
2. Pillar Rocks - Good to see if you have clear view without fogs
3. Pine forest - Carefull while you walk, thanks to citizens who junk the place
4. Moir Point - View point near Berijam Lake entry point.
5. Dolphin nose- One needs to walk for about a km or so one way from parking place. Plan your visit time accordingly.
6. Kodai lake - A must do activity. Even better in the evenings with clouds just roaming above the lake.
7. Coakers Walk - Leisure walk for about a km with excellent valley view.
8. Bryant Park - Just a park nothing great about it. We did it since it was near the lake. Kodai lake, Bryant Park, Coakers walk can be covered in sequence.
9. Kurinji andvar temple - Very nice temple and location. Roads which leads to this place is quite steep. Use proper gear while climbing and engine braking while declining.
10. Bear Shola Falls - 2kms from kodai lake and nice getaway for a quick shower. 1 kms walk from parking spot and its totally worth it.
11. Silver cascade falls- You can't miss this, this is just after the Kodai entry check post. Just to view and click snaps. You get decent breakfast here, have tried everytime we visited Kodai.

> If you have time and on your own car, one must try driving down via Palani instead of Bathlakundu. This route is so scenic than the regular kodai route. Nature at his best and beautiful and neat roads all the way to palani. Not recommended in nights since too many blind turns. Check maps for distance and plan accordingly. We throughly enjoyed our unplanned drive in this route and was very happy.

We had been there in the month of August, sorry for writing the review so late...It was a nice short stay ...enjoyed the beautiful view from B's Hive...rooms are comfortable & really within budget..Both Balaji(Manager) & Mathew(Caretaker) do well ensuring the comfort & requirements...Food provided by Mathew ( not prepared there though) was simply amazing!!!...Only drawback is that its little far from city center, Only thing that bothered me was the travel arrangement which was little expensive ......overall it was a nice time spend there...would like to visit there again ......Main reason: Mathew & Balaji :)..

I had booked this B&B due to such nice reviews on TripAdvisor. But I beg to differ a lot from the nice reviews, due to my experience. I have tried to be as objective as possible. I have been to Bed&Breakfast facilities before and have had good experiences and know what to expect from them. I wish to note that the owner Mr Balaji sends a "disclaimer-like" email right after booking confirmation that we should not expect luxurious amenities and prompt room service. But that does not absolve him if basic reasonable amenities are not satisfied.
Summary:
Good points
1. View. This place is located in a residential area and for the money you pay, you get a decent view of a small valley. (Places near coaker's walk may have much better view of the wide valley, but I guess they may be relatively expensive too. But this is still better than hotels right near bus-stand or within the hustle-bustle of the town. But then, this is personal preference.)
Sad points
1. No guarantee of rooms being available, clean and ready upon arrival. This causes extreme inconvenience after a long over-night journey and it is very unfortunate that it happened because of lack of discipline from owner and care-taker.
2. The care-taker Mr Arun is a one-man army. Arun is responsible for maintenance, cleanliness as well as providing food, which someone cooks in his house, that is located right besides the property. When all 4 rooms are booked, Arun simply doesn't scale. There is no practical way he can provide even basic amenities to all 4 rooms simultaneously. I noticed that in such a situation, his main concentration is providing home-cooked food to everyone, because he makes business out of it, and the "care-taking" aspect of the rooms takes a backseat. The owner should at least have one maid-servant (as is the case in many of the B&B) in addition to chief care-taker Arun, to ensure cleanliness.
3. Being a hill-station, hot-water should be ensured. The heater in the ground-floor room is not good and does not deliver hot water consistently. Firstly it takes half an hour to heat the water, and then it hardly gives even 2 mugs of hot water and again takes 10 minutes to heat the incoming cold water. By the time, you get next 2 mugs of hot water, the water in the bucket goes cold. My elderly parents had to take bath with semi-cold water in sheer cold. Arun blamed it on heater size and did not offer to help further.
4. You have to ask for even basic amenities. Even after you ask, job is not neat. Some salient points - Cleanliness is not good. Towels are not provided even within one hour. You have to ask for drinking water. If you ask for drinking water at 5pm, Arun assumed he would bring it at dinner time (along with his home-cooked dinner) after 8pm. I want to ask the owner if getting drinking water in reasonably short time is considered a luxurious amenity and is not provided by his B&B (as mentioned in his disclaimer email)
5. Walls are very thin and you can hear sound from adjacent room. In our case, on the 2nd morning at 4am, some guests arrived and were very inconsiderate to talk loudly with each other, making a mess of our sleep. Even if Arun did not have the guts to tell them to be considerate to other guests, he himself was talking to them right outside our window, showing zero consideration for our sleep.
6. I am not fully sure if Arun understands English fully, because he says "ok sir" to everything, but the job is not done within reasonable amount of time, and you have to keep on reminding him. So if you do not know the local language, you cannot be sure if your job will get done by Arun quickly or not.
7. Location. Ironically, the location within residential area has its disadvantages too. If you need anything (mineral water, snacks, or even go out for lunch/dinner), you need to have a vehicle, preferably your own hired taxi, else Arun's friend charges 100 bucks 1-way just to take you 2 kms into the town main area. And do not think about walking, because its a steep slope all the way to the bus-stand, unless you need a work-out.
8. I will give one thing to Arun that he is a hard-working guy and is constantly climbing 20 odd stairs up and down from his house down the slope to the B&B. But if he is overloaded, either he is not smart enough to realize what is urgent and what is not, or he simply doesn't care. Either ways, its sad for the customer.
Details of our experiece:
Because I had senior citizen parents with me, and my mother cannot climb many stairs due to extreme arthritis, I had requested the ground floor room, knowing fully well that the room is very small and there's no real space for walking in the room, when an extra bed is kept. The owner Mr Balaji was aware of our requirement. I have no complaints about our room size, as it was a conscious decision.
After booking confirmation, the owner Mr Balaji sent a few emails, with links to local weather etc and with a "disclaimer-like" email mentioning what to expect and what not to expect in this B&B. He even called one day prior to our booking to confirm our arrival time (our bus was scheduled to reach Kodaikanal at 7.30am in the morning). He mentioned that check-in/check-out is 24 hours and he doesn't charge extra for short extra stay of couple of hours beyond check-out time. He also said that our room would be ready when our bus arrives. So far so good.
Our bus reached at 8.30am and we reached B'sHive at 9am. Now here is what you should read and know. There is 1 room on ground floor (the one we booked). Also there is another room, which they call house-keeping room. I never fully understood if that is used by guests for overnight stay or not. There are 2 rooms upstairs which have a balcony and tables in the balcony for eating. There is 1 room on mezzanine (1.5) floor, which opens into a 4' X 4' grass patch, which the owner calls a garden facing room :) This room doesn't have any window facing front side. So not really a good room at all, unless you are there only for a few hours to freshen up.
1. Our room was totally unclean and not ready even at 9am. (Why the false promise 1 day before by the owner?)
2. Also, one family with kids who had just arrived 10 minutes before us, were given temporary accomodation in "our" ground-floor room, because their room upstairs was not ready. (This, despite the fact, that I had called the care-taker Arun half an hour before bus reached Kodaikanal). Since the room was unclean, they couldn't even lie down. (This is sheer dumbness. What is the point of giving them "our" room even as temporary accomodation, when care-taker Arun knew that we were arriving in 10 minutes. Due to this, instead of just this 1 family, they added our family to the list of folks who didn't get their booked room on arrival)
3. The above family was waiting for their upstairs room, which was not vacated by eariler guests, who were idling around and waiting for their breakfast and seemed in no hurry to check-out. After talking to them, they said they were not told by anyone, that they needed to vacate room on time for other in-coming new guests. (If care-taker Arun doesn't have the guts to tell this prior family to leave on time, it is Mr Balaji's responsibility to let them know that they cannot go beyond their check-out time, because their is another family arriving. If Mr. Balaji, booked the same room for overlapping duration of a few hours, then it is bad business practice. If he is purely showing his leniency with check-out time, it should not be done at the cost of inconvenience to other families)
4. We were directed by Arun to the mezannine floor room and my mother was forced to climb a flight of stairs in extreme pain. I was not happy at all, but after the night-journey, my parents needed a place to be comfortable and relax. This room too was unclean. (In my 2 days experience, Arun never bothers to clean any stuff unless told). There was a foul smell coming from the bathroom. So we could not even take a bath in this temporary room. We had to have breakfast in this unclean room.
I called Mr Balaji to ask what is going on with our room, and he said we will get room in half an hour. He was not very concerned, or even apologetic for the inconvenience caused. He suggested that I should be ok since we had been given a temporary room. I brought to his notice that my mother had to go through pain due to his neglect.
5. Finally we got our room at around 11.30 am, and that too because of the kindness of the family using our room as temporary room, because they vacated and moved to "another" temporary room - the housekeeping room, because their room was still not ready, as the upstairs guests took their own time to vacate.
6. Arun and his brother do not bother to tell the truth. If lunch is expected at 2.30, they should tell it to us, so that we may at least have some snacks. They promise lunch availability at 1pm (when ordered at around 11.30am), and keep saying, it is ready, but bring it at 2.30pm. Since they keep saying its ready, my elderly parents did not eat anything else, expecting lunch soon, and were inconvenienced till 2.30pm.
7. There was a water problem on the 2nd evening and there was no water in the bathroom, and Arun asked for our bucket that he was using to fix it and pour water into the tank. We gladly obliged to help him. After he fixed the issue, he just disappeared with our bucket. I mean, this is not even something we asked for, that is delayed. Next morning, to take a bath, we have to find him, and ask him to get our bucket back.

Overall, there is sheer neglect of basic considerations for guests. I would not recommend this place to others at all. This is a mockery of B&B. There are much better B&B at other places, who offer homely and pleasant stay with reasonable amenities.

Response from BsHive, Owner at B's Hive
Responded 10 Jan 2013
Our reply to this review is: Apology. Our action is: Correction and return of the money. While I may disagree on certain details, but not on the overall picture of this guest .Hence, I restrict my response to those points that I think would be of common interest. What matters in the end is we failed to give him a good time. How could we go so wrong on this case? It started with previous guest who booked the entire cottage, landed up with more number of persons than booked for, and same happened with another group landing up in the mid night, catching us off guard. This had a cascading effect on the subsequent arrivals, in terms of our giving them a neat clean room on check in, attention we could give to our guests and the hospitality we extend etc,. We are correcting it, by hence forth being clear in the group size and enforcing the check in / checkout time strictly. We will also prevent late night check in, causing disturbance to others. The two other guests stayed with us were also affected because of this, but thankfully they have not written a review about this, yet. It takes longer for the water to get heated up in winter in Kodaikanal. But we have addressed the water quantity issue by having installed a big geyser. The guest feels I was inconsiderate. I was not. As I was not physically present during the entire duration of his stay, I answered his phone call and was any way parallelly working on getting his room right. Arun prioritizing food over service? Not true. If we prioritize that way, we may end up receiving these types of reviews and we will have no one to serve food. While he interprets my welcome mail as a disclaimer it is the other way around. It is a “claimer.” In the mail I promise a neat clean room, attentive service, and the rooms to be just as displayed in the photos’ in my website, apart from the points mentioned by him. These are the main concerns of those who book the rooms. I take this kick in our butt as something we deserve in this case, but act in a way that helps us to improve. As we have not served him well, we do not deserve his money either. We have returned it. I ASSURE THE FUTURE TRAVELERS THE SHORT COMINGS MENTIONED ARE FIXED.

on my final day i forgot my phone in my room. when i called in to ask them to pick it up and keep it for me they said they would. However when i called later they said they could not find any phone in the room. I checked my phone's location through a locator app that periodically updates my phone's location and it revealed that my phone was indeed in the vicinity of the B's Hive premises for at least 20 minutes after i checked out.

its an average place (better places are available for cheaper in Kodaikannal) and the experience with my phone makes me very hesitant to even

Let me start by thanking Mr E Balaji - the owner for ensuring a pleasant stay, and also to the care taker -- Arun, who left no stone unturned to keep our visit pleasant.

Initially: While planning our trip to Kodaikanal, I researched the place quite well on Tripadvisor and it resulted in to getting genuine feedback for this B&B. I was impressed with the smoothness of transaction and the honest feedbacks provided by the facility owner - Mr Balaji himself.

Before we set foot, we knew what to expect. That helps you keep straight. I must thank Mr. Balaji for the useful info he shared with us on Kodai before start of our stay.

Its not a big place, but one which is clean, airy and has terrific view of the valley. Especially the terrace rooms which have an excellent view and are pretty spacious. Though B;s Hive is away from the Lake (which is the main tourist spot), and it was always a roller coaster experience what with the efficiency of the drivers to reach there, but its worth it. Believe me!

Reaching Kodai: We took a train from Bangalore Cantt which dropped us to Kodai Road station. Its good 80 kms from kodaikanal. On the Kodai road station, the only means of transport which looks good is the taxi..and there's no bargain esp in the season time. Enroute there's nice view and you can find a decent spot to take a bite! There are a couple of view points where one can enjoy the valley.

B's Hive was ready to welcome us...unfortunately within an hour of our arrival -- my 5 year old met an accident and as a Godsend -- Arun helped us immediately by accompanying to the hospital. Thanks a ton, Arun -- I would never forget that. For a moment we thought our journey was spoilt before the start..but the place and people have their own charm and my kid started enjoying despite her condition.

It was a pleasure to meet spend quality time with the owner - Mr Balaji, whose knowledge of the place and advice is unbeatable. His valuable suggestions ensured that we enjoy Kodai to the best in whatever time we had.

For those who are looking at -- quality stay, caring attitude, honesty, integrity and commitment to customer service combined with Value For Money -- I whole heartedly recommend this small cosy abode.

We left with a promise that we would be visiting kodai once a year and won't trouble ourselves in scouting -- where to stay!

Visited the B'Hive on the 20th of May with my wife and stayed for 2 nights.

We were given the terrace rooms and the view from the balcony is worth relishing.

Pros':

1. A very simple,neat and tidy place.
2. Very Good hospitality by the Balaji Family and the Caretaker- Arun.
3. A Perfect Getaway spot.

Cons':

1. Had a bad experience with Food, Food needed to be ordered from nearby Mess as there is no Home-Cooked food at this place. The Mess food was In-edible and we decided to stay without food for nearly a day.

2. Located at a remote place from the Main city and its tourist spots. Roads near the place were very bad. Also.there wasn't any other means of transport except hiring a taxi every time which proved to be very expensive.

Overall, a Pleasant Budget Stay worth experiencing.
