A small family home, nestled in the old streets of Bundi, waiting to welcome you. The place has been restored in true Indian style, preserving the essentials like tradition and design.
You could describe it as "a little hide-out under the fort", but there is the matter of accessibility . . . a labyrinth of little alleyways, where you dodge cows and pigs on foot, then steep climb up and 3 or 4 sets of stairs, no lift. It's a good thing the staff are there to assist, especially if you have more than some carry-on luggage. Our room could best be described as "charming Indian" : small, no TV, no fridge, no safe, weak wifi. Very Indian twin beds with rock-hard mattress and light doona. Quaint chiseled columns with lovely capitals and vaulting, but so low that you constantly have to duck to avoid concussion. Bundi is quiet, but comes alive very early in the morning (5/6 am) and the noise travels up the hill into the room - lovely if you're an early riser. The bathroom looks good, but is tiny ; the open shower means that it is impossible to keep it dry. The draw-card of Bundi Vilas is the rooftop terrace, where a set, vegetarian dinner is served under the backdrop of the magnificent fort. On our first night, the fort was not lit ; with only a small candle, it's hard to see anything on your plate. The second night the lights were on and it was splendid. Breakfast is also set (not buffet), but there's a fairly good range, all served at the table. Bundi is a small village, not on the main tourist map. In that context Bundi Vilas is very good and the guys that run it do a great job.…

At 72 years old accompanied by my 35 year old son who has travelled India we have never had such a bad experience as our visit to Bundi villas. Having booked a deluxe heritage room which turned out to be 16 sq metres with a window that did not open ,a dirty bathroom. We were greeted with we are only just getting ready after covid! there was no menu. We had our dinner on the terrace with I candle and a strip light from the kitchen. The fort was not lit up. The soup offered was inedible and the biscuit as a pudding was rock hard.Breakfast was canned orange juice served in a glass that had toothpaste in the bottom, the milk jug had mould inside the jug and the cereal containers had chocolate spread all around the opening. The toast was rock hard, we asked for fresh toast which meant we had the same toast that had been put back in the toaster. coffee was powder coffee. We were the only people staying. Perhaps that tells a story. Normally I write positive reports!! FYI they do not take credit cards…

Response from JP Sharma, General Manager at Bundi Vilas
Responded 24 Mar 2023
Thank you for your sharing the feedback I am also totally shocked to hear such feedback but I was aware of this that these clients will complain. Let me explain you what happened : Arrival : On the arrival of the hotel the guest mindset was not ready to stay in Bundi Vilas. They were expecting something more luxurious and grand. The didn’t allow my staff even bring their luggage to their room. Twin Room: we have only 02 twin rooms in the entire property and we always mentioned its subject to the availability. These guest arrived and we provide them the twin room which is room no 101 and its quite big as per the standard rooms size and been 400 years old house we cannot keep the same room size for all the 07 rooms. Some rooms are smaller and some of them are big. As soon as the guest entered inside the room he requested to rooms with window open and we showed him all the rooms as that day the hotel was empty so we have asked them to choose any room they like but they refused to stay in double room and ask us to provide 02 rooms . My Manager called me and asked me to speak with the guest and I had a word with clients and he mentioned that his father is claustrophobic and same is been informed to the agency and they have requested the rooms with windows which is not the one we have given. we are happy to provide them 02 rooms but they need to call travel agency and inform them to update us. As soon as I mentioned this to the guest he hanged up the phone . As soon as I have this conversation I have called their agent and update him everything. Food: We have restaurant on roof top and we get good no of the walking clients so for resident guest , on arrival we ask them to about the meals and offer them the thali meal which is set menu . These clients they have confirmed the same and later refused to have the meal . After 45 minutes they asked for the ala carte meal which we have served them. As per them the food was good. the sesame biscuits where given with the tea during dinner time as gesture from our side which even we don't charge. Most of the guests loves our breakfast and this is really shocking for me to see the dirty glass of paste as this is impossible . Flood Lit: Due to the power breakdown that day the palace floodlit was not working so this is not in our hands and we cannot commit on the same. We try our best that the palace should lit up every day. Bundi is a small town and we encourage to hire local staff so you cant expect five star service in such a place. At the end of the day the guest is always right and once again we are really sorry for the inconvenience caused to the clients and we have refunded the full amount for of their 02 night to their agent , even after refund the guest choose to write.

Bundi is off the beaten path, and the palace/fort there was a highlight. We had a private tour by the Bundi Villas owner and we were amazed by the wall paintings throughout. As for the Bundi Villas, the rooftop meal we had with a night view of the palace was one of our best memories from the trip.

Bundi Vilas was a great stop for my friend and and I as part of our Delhi-Rajasthan-Agra itinerary. I had not heard of Bundi prior to this trip and was delighted this was included in our itinerary. Bundi Vilas is an old renovated haveli and retains its old worldly charm while providing modern amenities and comfort. The staff- Vishnu, Karan are great. The food was homey and delicious. We really enjoyed our stay at Bundi Vilas and would recommend it to anyone interested in a non touristy off the beaten path locale.

We were here for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. Vishnu welcomed us from our car and wheeled, then carried, our cases up the steep, narrow alley then up 3 flights of stairs. The hotel wouldn’t work for anyone with mobility issues. Our room was very comfortable. The breakfast was great, no cooked food but yoghurt, fruit, cereal and an excellent range of spreads for toast, even had peanut butter! The evening meal was a set menu and we found it to be lacking in flavour so were disappointed with it. It was also pricey at about £10 each, especially when compared to our meal the following evening in a cafe a few doors down the road - they served a delicious meal for half the price and had a range of food on offer. The setting for the meal however was excellent with the lit fort behind us. We were caught out at the end as they didn’t accept credit cards. I’d recommend the hotel but suggest eating out.…

A breathtaking timeless moment in a sumptuous ancestral palace at the foot of a fort bordered by wild nature. A warm welcome from the owners who maintain a magnificent interior. Long live the fourteenth generation of the owner family! To be highly recommended.

We were rather shocked on arrival to have our suitcases put onto a scooter and told to follow it. No idea where we were going had to rush to follow up the road then up an alleyway. On arrival at hotel it all seemed very disorganised, had to lend them a pen so they could fill in form. On ground floor is a desk but the computer and paperwork were all on first floor but we were left sitting downstairs. Room was lacking anywhere to put suitcases or to put clothes. The bathroom was a wet room with a flimsy curtain which meant that the water was everywhere and took a while to dry. Bed was comfortable but was disturbed by noise of chairs scrapping on floor above. Food very good but we would have liked the opportunity to choose from menu but were told we were having the set menu. It was lovely to sit and view the fort at night and the lights of Bundi. Breakfast no choice but the fruit was freshly prepared.…

We stayed for one night at the excellent Bundi Villas and wished we could have stayed longer. Located in the centre of Bundi and very well hidden. Once found it unfolds and spreads out upwards. The property nestles into the walls of the Garh Palace which rises majestically behind it. The hotel is a very well restored traditional havell with all modern comforts. Our room was located on one of the upper floors with a beautiful view of the blue roofs of Bundi. The room was spacious with all you required. Small but well equipped bathroom with a great shower. We ate at the hotel’s roof top restaurant where the view was amazing with the palace behind you and the town of Bundi below. We had an amazing vegetarian Thali meal which was probably one of the best we had on our trip through Rajasthan. The staff were amazing and so helpful, friendly and polite. Thank you to all of the staff for making our stay very memorable. …

Pressed up against the palace walls, this place is beautifully appointed and perfectly located. Breakfasts were delicious (try the masala omelette), and despite some communication problems, the staff were attentive and very helpful, eventually arranging on very short notice for a cab to the Delhi airport when coronovirus restrictions kicked in. We ate one dinner at the rooftop restaurant, where the food was adequate, but the view of the castle made it an experience not to miss. As an added bonus, there were countless opportunities for monkey gazing at short range. The only down side is that, as noted in other reviews, it is a bit of a strenuous walk from the street to the hotel, and then up to the rooms.

As part of our Rajasthan Tour, brilliantly organised for us by TGS Tours of Jaipur BTW, we visited Bundi not usually on the recognised tour route. Traveling from Udaipur (which we loved), via a visit to the Menal Temples (a must see and free to visit), we arrived in Bundi at lunchtime. We stayed at the Bundi Vilas, a haveli built into the walls of the old Bundi Palace, not easy to access if you have difficulties. The staff in Bundi Vilas were lovely and dinner on the rooftop is just fabulous - could really have done with staying another night. Recommended.
