Simply, the best cloud forest experience in Ecuador. Walking the lush mountain trails, breathing the mountain air, observing the plentiful birdlife, enjoying organic meals and soaking up the peaceful surrounds was an all-round, great getaway. Peter was a superb guide along the hikes and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the local wildlife and environment. Seeing organic coffee growing and sampling... More

I will never forget my wonderful experience of hiking, relaxation and bird watching. The food is healthy, tasty and served family style. Peter, the owner's #1 goal is to share his love of the birds, rain forest, plants, streams and animals to his quests. He is joyful, amazingly knowledgable and radiates love. The rooms are comfortable, intimate and you can... More

The Refugio de Intag is just one of those special places that you will always remember fondly and carry with you. Peter was a wonderful host and shared with us a lot of the history of the area and gave us ideas for activities. Oswaldo and Lupe were terrific as well. Oswaldo took us up to Gualaman for the day,... My husband and I enjoyed a peaceful three nights at El Refugio -- our first excursion into rural Ecuador and Peter and Oswaldo could not have offered a better introduction to their very special part of the country. The setting is very intimate, with only a few other guests, and meals are served up family-style. Peter was always available and... More

Haven on earth. El Refugio is located in the cloud forest where there is none of the heat, humidity and bugs associated with the rain forest. Peter[the owner] was a most gracious host and guide for our stay and Sandy took me on an unforgettable hike through the cloud forest! The food served was something I wouldn't normally order[vegetarian] but... More

We are a family of four, having just returned from a long weekend's stay at "El Refugio". I have nothing but praise for everything we experienced there. After a delicious dinner we settled in for the night in our spacious cabin with 2 rooms (one for the kids and one for us) and enclosed balcony. That night, it so happened,... More

The perfect name for this extraordinary place tucked into the cloud forest of Ecuador. It is amidst a valley of fertile gardens and bubbling brook that an extraordinary man, Peter Joost, created a welcoming inn from which to explore all the flora and fauna and to meet the friendly people that attune themselves to nature. Peter, who was a lifelong... More

Your senses and imagination are wonderfully assaulted at El Refugio de Intag Lodge. I love the outdoors but have little knowledge of hummingbirds or orchids. No matter, the owner/manager possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of birds and plants. He combines this knowledge with fascinating and instructional presentation. I was enthralled. I relaxed and slept well in a newly constructed lodge with... More

This bit of Heaven is poetry in motion! The river, the dancing birds, Tarzan vines and lush forests were breathtaking. A landmark I will always remember is the charming swinging bridge that took us to the Refugio's ridge-top hut, with picturesque views. The tranquility I experienced in this sanctuary is unparalleled. So many wonderful sounds and sights of the brilliant... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This cloud forest Lodge is located just 33 miles from the market town of Otavalo along the Toabunchi River in northwestern Ecuador. The brick-and-stucco house and the wooden cabin are surrounded by gardens that attract the 200-plus species of birds from the retreat's 60 acres of forest. The often snow-capped 17,000' Cotacachi mountain is in view. Mild temperatures are the norm: an average of 75 to 80 F. Guests can hike along the river or up the mountain to view birds and orchids and other strikingly beautiful wildflowers. The area is free of tropical diseases. Meals are available from the resident caretakers who are also the cook and guide. A thirty-minute drive takes you to the small town of Apuela, with stores, a health clinic and the Coffee Cooperative of ACRI, to witness the way the coffee process works--from farm to roasted beans. Not far away are the hot baths of Nangulvi. These natural hot springs are set in a deep valley, the mountains rising straight from the valley floor. The best part of El Refugio is the closeness to nature it provides. The refuge is off the main road, so the sounds you hear are the birds and the river, and the clouds that frequently cloak the forested mountains make for a dramatic setting. ... more   less

“We took a bus from Quito to Otavalo on Friday, went to the Otavalo market on Saturday, and took a bus to Santa Rosa (the bus stop for El Refugio Logde ). Use a Spanish phrase book to ask the bus driver to let you know when you are at Santa Rosa). We took two buses back to Quito on Wednesday. It was pretty easy. The buses were in good condition, and the tickets were cheap. We were advised not to put our bags in the overhead storage, so we put them at our feet when the buses were full, or next to us when there were empty seats.”
