Smoking area. This is where you can smoke at the Royale Chulang Ala Lumpur Hotel. It's on the right as you exit the main entrance. There is a roof. There is an ashtray at the top of the stairs. There are chairs. Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the building, and the hotel has also prohibited smoking on the balconies, even in rooms with balconies.

When I asked where I could smoke at KLIA2, I was told "outside," and I couldn't find an ashtray in particular. It was late at night, so there weren't many people around and hardly anyone was smoking, so it was difficult to find a place to smoke.

Arrived here having arrived by road from Malacca.

Impressive, if slightly old-fashioned lobby - and quickly checked in by reception. Up to the fourth floor to room 423. Our hearts sank when we saw the building site next door! But in all honesty we weren’t disturbed by it and the construction workers knocked off at 8pm and didn’t restart until 8am, so no big deal.

Our room turned out to be the biggest one we had on our trip. Large bathroom/dressing area, kitchen area with fridge and a small freezer compartment, microwave, electric 2-ring hob, kettle with tea & coffee, sink, kitchen cupboards. But note - no crockery, cutlery or pans, or washing-up liquid or T-towels. Just 2 mugs for tea - no glasses either! At most you can re-heat a takeaway.

Large bedroom with table & chairs, desk & chair and a sofa. Bed was comfortable. Two free-to-use safety deposit boxes and two wardrobes plus drawers. WiFi worked well.

Now, to be absolutely honest, the hotel could do with a big refurbishment. It is very old-fashioned and rather tatty in places. Only one electrical socket worked in our room and some overhead lights didn’t work. The toilet door didn’t close either! All that being said, it was comfortable and clean and the staff were all lovely. It’s also a low-rise building, with a lot of character and an oasis in the hustle and bustle of KL, and a change from the ever present soulless skyscrapers.
The swimming pool is glorious!

Breakfast : An absolute feast, catering for all tastes, Indian, Chinese, Western- really sumptuous and good quality. Excellent.

Close to Conlay MRT and the Pavilion Mall, the latter having a wonderful food court in the basement - highly recommended.

So, despite the need for refurbishment, we really liked this hotel. It is truly an oasis in the concrete jungle of central KL.

On to breakfast. An absolute feast, catering for all tastes, Indian, Chinese, Western- really sumptuous and good quality.

We had a brief look at the swimming pool which although we didn’t have time to use, was a great addition.

Close to Conley MRT and the Pavilion mall. The latter of which has a wonderful food court in the basement- recommended.

So, despite the need for refurbishment, we really liked this hotel. As I say, it is an oasis in the concrete jungle of central KL.

As mentioned this hotel is old.

The architecture is beautiful.

The location is quite good, a 10min walk to Pavillion and 15 to 20 mins to Jalan Aloor.

The Hotel:

Check in - very slow, 1 staff member

Room - 1 bed apartment is huge but run down, things broken, carpet dirty, mouldy bathroom, leaking toilet, broken headboard (fell down) broken lamp, inoperative safe box.

Breakfast- mostly Malay / Asian food, food very ordinary.

Service - not overwhelming 😒

Gym - old and run down

The Hotel rents out rooms cheap for 2 day packages for local malay people. On the weekend it's like being in an local apartment complex with 50 to 60 in the pool.

I'd never return

We stayed here for three nights. The hotel has a grand entrance with a lobby that is a large open space and has a high ceiling. Check in was quick and a room was available for us slightly before usual check in time.

We were given an apartment, which included a cooking top and microwave, but we didn’t use them and not sure if they worked. There were no cooking utensils nor crockery anyway, but we did order some plates and cutlery on request one time.

Generally the room had dated feel and items need to be maintained, repaired or replaced.
Some power sockets didn’t work. TV was old and the remote only worked when standing close by.

Even the lift was slightly faulty as one resident was stuck in it for ten minutes before we used it.

The bathroom was also dated and it was not stocked with many amenities but they were available on request. The toilet flush button was very stiff to push down.

The Swimming pool area was large but again not well maintained, with lounging chairs feeling old and not much staff working. The towels were limited and some were not the best quality.

Breakfast was a decent buffet selection of local and international dishes and decent range of beverages to choose from. There are local favourites of roti canai and nasi lenak available too.

The hotel rate was cheap and it is conveniently located close to KLCC and Pavilion Bukit Bintang. The staff are friendly enough.

A nice hotel with grand look. The rooms, however, were in bad state. The Room Safe was non-operational, pillow covers and bed covers were dirty & worn-out. Even towels were dirty. We had to call housekeeping to replace all.

The breakfast, though, was nice and very elaborate, with good veg food options (it has a separate South Indian counter). But there was almost no veg food option in room service menu. Moreover, in room service, they insisted on paying upfront instead of adding in room bill which was an inconvenience.

This hotel is a great destination to stay - especially for work. However, please see below my own experience analysis and grading:

Hospitality 6/10

Food and beverages in the hotel 7/10

Food and beverages for conferences 4/10 low quality and taste

Location 9/10

Customer service 6/10 you have two kinds of staff - either (pleasant and welcoming) or (rude and impatient)

Rooms 6/10 rooms are deteriorated and many appliances and furniture pieces are old

Also, it is really noisy during the day ( at the date of this evaluation ) because of the construction going on around the hotel premises.

All in all, if you want to come to this hotel, you will come for two main reasons: location and price.

I arrived to the lobby later in the afternoon and was promptly attended to by a friendly and professional staffer. In a friendly manner I suggested it would be great if I could be allocated a quiet room with a nice view. The staffer very kindly upgraded my room to a suite on the 11th floor. Upon arrival at my suite, I was impressed at the enormous amounts of space and the homeliness of what is essentially an apartment. Whilst the hotel has been around a while, the room was in excellent order with a couple of maintenance issues apparent in the bathroom (shower needs new hose, the bath faucet leaks, the lower hinge pins in the bathroom door are completely missing etc). The room is great and outstanding value for money.
My only gripe about the hotel - and as a western traveller it’s a big complaint, is the breakfast. The hotel is almost entirely occupied by middle eastern and local folk, so maybe it’s not a big issue for them, but the “hot” food was near stone cold. Hash browns, beautifully cooked and well presented, but near stone cold. Sausages same same. Ham same same. Although my breakfast was included in the room rate, I stopped having breakfast at the hotel, preferring to buy it from nearby restaurants, as then I got hot food. I would rate the breakfast zero on any scale chosen.
I sent an email to the hotel on my first morning, and it has just been ignored. I’d rate the hotel in general 5 out of 5, but the poor breakfast, and in particular the complete disregard for my written concern, consigns the rating to a lower level.
Sorry Royale Chulan hotel, you need to treat your customers with less contempt and address concerns as they manifest themselves.

We were visiting Kuala Lumpur and we booked into this 5 star hotel. We stayed in this Hotel about 5 years ago and we were really happy then. We booked 2 apartment rooms and right away we noticed there were no cutleries. The cupboard door between the hallway and the bathroom could not be shut properly and anyone could see through to the bathroom. A bit of the valance sheet bottom came off. We have managed to change the rooms to the hotel side.
The rooms were better but not clean. There was a bit of bread left on the floor by the door. The cleaners definitely didn’t do a good job. The change of towels was another joke. I had to ask for fresh towels virtually every day. The cleaner would take away used towels but they never got replaced! Tea bags and coffee replacements were a hit and miss. They were replaced one day and not the other
Breakfast used to be so good. Not this time. I found certain food quite cold. Earl Grey tea wasn’t on display and I asked for it a couple of times. One day I was told it was actually chargeable but it was given to me as a compliment. I can’t recall any 5 star hotels with no Earl Grey tea for breakfast.

Enough said. I must say most of the staff were very polite and courteous, except the one who served me the earl grey tea reluctantly.

Would I choose this hotel again? I think not

well situated only a 15 minute walk to klcc and bukit bintang the hotel has a 5 star lobby which is very impressive.
we spent 18 days here and had a premier room with a balcony and gate straight onto the pool..service is good and ala carte food is very good and reasonably priced. tofoyal and saiful who waiter in the restaurant are awesome and a credit to the hotel..we had a night flight and hotel gave us a 6,pm late checkout which was also a nice touch ..but to be honest the hotel is not 5 star for the following reasons...the furniture in rooms and carpets look tired..the cladding on the side of hotel has come off and is just piled up like a rubble site..some sockets in rooms don't work..and every shaver socket doesn't work ( i tried several)..in 18 days never saw pool being cleaned..also lots of loungers but very few parasols and mattresses for the loungers also the pool showers are hidden out of sight and consequentlypeople don't shower before entering the pool..the lift buttons so worn you can't make out floor numbers..food and breakfast buffet was luke warm at best at times.
BUT ..your not paying shangri la or trader hotel prices..generally a good hotel that I would say is 4 star and i would stay again..because I enjoyed it overall and staff looked after you
