You can certainly visit Kyoto on a day trip in that its easy to travel from Osaka to Kyoto (plenty of trains) but whether you could actually see an awful lot in Kyoto in a day is in my opinion questionable.

If you arrive by shinkansen at Shin Osaka Station, take the central exit and turn right towards the NORTH exit of the station. Walk about 30-40 metres. You will see an escalator going down. Take that down one level. turn immediately right and you will see stairs going down on right and elevator on left. You can take either. Go down to street level.
At street level turn LEFT. Walk towards the bridge. the shuttle bus stop is sign posted. It is directly under the bridge beside a very large bicycle parking area. After the bus stop are taxis.
It is a very convenient service once you can find the stop.
