The space is big but maybe too modern design or kind of mixed style. I like the big space but a lot of them in black color which I am a little bit not used to. The room in the beginning feels like inside the basement. The front door looks like a fire drill door and the walking hall is...

We had 2 rooms booked at the Screen for a family and the hotel was excellent for its location, the quality of the staff (who agreed to change one of the room as we wished one on higher floors) and overall the atmosphere. The hotel design is not always exactly pragmatic, but for a boutique hotel i totally accept that....

My husband and I just spent 3 nights at The Screen and we are so happy we found this hotel! It's in an adorable neighborhood with tons of shops, cafes and restaurants, a few minutes from major bus lines and a train line, walking distance from the Imperial Palace and within a 20 minute walk to Pontocho Alley (an area...

Agree with many of the reviews, staff friendly and helpful but overall just slightly weird and maybe just too edgy or do I really mean black? Black corridors, black room and if you actually want to walk round the bed, don't choose 203. If just one metre of the toilet had been committed to the gap between wall mounted TV,...

I wanted a hotel with a bit of character for my latest stay in Kyoto and this hotel really delivered. We stayed in room 101 which had a lovely huge bed screened from a small sitting area by shoji screens. The staff were quiet, unobtrusive and very helpful and responsive. An unexpected perk of the room was a huge jacuzzi...

My husband and I spent 5 nights at The Screen during our recent trip to Japan and were generally very pleased with the hotel. First of all the service is top notch and everyone on the team goes out of their way to help. We found them to be delightful. Considering that our Japanese consists of a handful of words...

I love a good design hotel, so I was really looking forward to our stay at The Screen. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations - it looked more like a love hotel. Tacky interiors, flights of stairs to navigate, black hallways, and purple lights at reception. Also quite a walk from the main areas for food and markets etc.

I've just read the review posted before this one, and it basically says what I was going to say. Anyone complaining about the staff at this hotel, must be writing about the wrong hotel. It's a little gem in an excellent location --- and for the three nights we were there, the staff could not have been more helpful. The...

This hotel gets rather mixed and slightly negative reviews on Trip Advisor but I can't think why. The rooms are only small if you are Maharajah with his own palace. The staff could only be called abrupt or unhelpful by someone whose fluent Japanese allowed them to see through the linguistic and cultural challenges that they face everyday. It is...

We stayed here in 2015, so this review is a bit dated. Our experience was very good and the property was very nice. The rooms each have a different theme, which is unique. My favorite part was the service (as you'd expect in a country like Japan) and the happy hour. You have to call in advance to make sure...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
