3 of us stayed here in Oct 2014. It's high-season in Kyoto or something along this line. Either triple sharing rooms were sold out or overpriced. I ended up enquiring their sister property, however due to a shortage of room, the staff recommended Ikoi no ie. Room reservation was a breeze. Staff who emailed was helpful. We were told the... We stayed at Ikoinoie for four nights. 31 Oct-3 Nov 2014. The room is simple japanese style for our family of four people. We enjoyed the japanese gowns that were prepared for us. We had some nice pictures wearing them. There are japanesse restaurants near by and udong was nice. For the guest house staff, they are very pretty in... More

This guest house has a good location, just about 10 min away (by walk) from the station. We stayed here for 2 nights. Some comments said it's noisy, but actually we felt it's so quiet at night. Location is good: restaurants, shops and even Japanese bathhouse... etc. The only thing that I want to remind travelers is: Please double check... More

The last time a stayed here was in January 2008. The last time I was here I didnt have a child and I was 6 years younger. Now that I have a 5 year old and am 6 years older, it makes a huge difference. I think there has been a change in ownership since the last time I was... More

The Hostel is a bit hard to find as there is no big clear sign indicating that this is the place. However, you manage to find as the street it is on is very small. The staff is very helpful and nice. Location is perfect. Maybe 5-10 minutes walk from the metro.Very traditional place. Traditional showers and traditional bedding. Very... More

Actually this is a part of a consolidated group of ryokan all close together, although that doesn't detract from the stay in any way. It is very comfortable and clean and the staff are great. I would stay again, but earplugs are a good investment. A large group of Japanese teenagers happened to stay on one night of our stay.... More

We stayed here for 4 nights in Kyoto. The staff were so kind and helped us so much with their suggestions of what to do in the city and booking events for us. The rooms were clean and spacious. It is close to the subway and JR station. This guesthouse is located in a quaint traditional styled street, which was... More

The location is a little obscure, being on a very small lane off the main road but I had a great stay here. The room was cozy; with tatami mats and futons, and very clean. The common area was a great place to meet fellow travelers and share experiences. The staff members were helpful too.

I stayed here 5 nights while in Kyoto. I paid extra for a room with a bathroom, but it was still a very affordable option. The staff are very friendly and there are lots of good travel advice and information in the common kitchen. The place is a relatively long walk from Kyoto station, but in a very quiet, old-fashioned... More

We'd booked a room for 3 people as our adult daughter was with us and we'd requested a bathroom. It was a longer walk from the station than we'd been told, especially when you have luggage. Our room was in an and up 3 flights of stairs with no lift either. For the price the accommodation was poor. It was... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
