This was our first experience of staying in Japanese Ryokan. Prior to the trip, I expected this Ryokan should have nice decoration in the room because of the price. We paid around 400 plus USD for a normal room with breakfast. (I can stay in Ritz Carlton in Osaka with this price). The decoration and furniture of the room is... More

This is a lovely place to stay in the heart of the older part of Kyoto, with small streets and individual shops. The market is also very close by. The rooms are traditional and laid out ready for sleep whilst you are out. You are given the impression that you are the only guests as everything flows so seamlessly, but... More

We stayed in the ryokan in February 2015. Such an amazing experience, staff were very friendly of course. The futons on the ground were so comfy and snug seeing it was freezing cold winter time. The breakfast was interesting being traditional Japanese but we loved it all the same.

We choose to stay here for one night while visiting Kyoto and what can I say nothing but amazing. From the attentive of staff to dinner and breakfast and also the onsen! Plus the additional touches such as the Farewell, decorative chopsticks and the welcoming drinks and cake. Thanks Matsui Honkan Ryokan

We stayed at this ryokan for a couple of days while we were in Kyoto. The experience we had was fabulous! The Japanese style room was really simple and clean and the Japanese traditional breakfasts was quite the experience. The onsen in the basement was very clean and quite useful for relaxation after hours of walking around Kyoto.

As part of our family trip to Japan to visit relatives we wanted to spend at least one night in a traditional Japanese hotel. This trip was our kids first trip to Japan and a stay at a Ryokan that included a traditional Japanese hot bath was at the top of our list. My cousin made the reservations and included... More

We stayed here for one night only in a Japanese style room to experience traditional Japanese culture. After many hours of searching, we settled on this ryokan based on a number of good reviews and we were not disappointed in the slightest. We dropped our luggage in the morning and returned at check-in time. We had the keiseki set dinner... More

Warm welcome with light refreshment and a small toy for my son. Room is very neat and clean, newly renovated I think. Our booking came with dinner and breakfast. I am very pleased that the staff who made last minute changes for beef sukiyaki for us as my husband doesn't eat fish. Good portion and quality. My son also had... More

Let me start by first saying this review is written by someone who has previously lived in Japan (six years), and although now back home in NYC, I frequent Japan several times a year, and have been to countless ryokans and onsen hotels. I mention this because I’m a bit more attuned than the typical tourist as to how the... More

If you're looking for a tradional ryokan experience in Kyoto it would be hard to beat Matsui. The location is perfect. Steps from Nishiki Market, a short walk from Pontocho Alley, a longer walk from Gion and a short subway ride from Kyoto central station. Unlike Tokyo the mass transit options aren't as easy or useful, in Kyoto. We used... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
