We stayed three nights at this great hotel. It has the feel of a Japanese Ryokan but is a bit more upscale than the traditional. The hotel is on a quiet street and close to many local restaurants. It is about a 10 min. cab ride from Kyoto station but it puts you in the center of the real downtown... More

This is the best hotel I stayed during the vacation in Japan. Japanese style room with very hospitable staffs. Location is great, walking distance to Nikishi market and bus station in Shijo area.Dinner and breakfast is also very delicious. I can never forget the staff even wave a flag for farewell after check out. Amazing experience!

With Japanese hospitality at its best, this ryokan and it staff made my stay very enjoyable. The staff are gracious, kind, attentive, and always helpful. The rooms are comfortable, elegant, and very clean. This ryokan is conveniently situated in the heart of Kyoto.

My family stayed there around Christmas time. We all love it. Excellent Ryokan experience. The setting and environment are perfect for a quiet stay. It cleansed your mind body and soul during you stayed there. The room is huge. The staff are extremely friendly. It locates on a quiet street, about 10 mins walk from Nishiki market, major department stores... More

Such a great find of a place, location is perfect for exploring Kyoto. Nishiki market is on the doorstep. The traditional Japanese style rooms were great to experience. The Onsen was lovely and a must to use.

There is not much to say, as this was simply a mind blowing cultural experience...and I do not give 5 points so often. From the moment entering this Ryokan to the final greeting upon departure by the manager. However - and I have read some of the negative comments which say more about the authors than about the Ryokan -... More

We stayed one night in a traditional hotel and two nights in this ryokan while in Kyoto. The hotel was clean and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. It is a little hit or miss how much English each of the staff members speak. The public bath (onsen) in the basement was very clean and super relaxing at the... More

Booked a Japanese-style room with in-room dinner. Breakfast is provided in the dining hall. Room is spacious and clean, with a toilet room and a bathroom. Service is good. We are greeted with snacks and Motcha tea right at the check-in time, and good service, including the dinner service through out our stay. There's public bath / onsen in the... More

Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi is a great place to stay if you are visiting Kyoto. Quiet neighborhood surrounded with great restaurants. It's walk-able distance to Gion district and Kawaramachi for shopping. My husband and I got a decent sized room for two of us, probably bigger than most studio apartments in the city, their public bathroom is well maintained and everything... More

We stayed one night at this ryokan and wow! It was beautiful, the people were super nice, and the hotel is in a central location! We paid for the Japanese dinner and breakfast and it was just so yummy!!! Our room was a traditional Japanese room with a private onsen (bathtub and shower), the whole room was so pretty and... Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
