As a well travelled couple in our mid-twenties, we've seen our fair share of budget accommodation. However, no matter how low the price they at least provided us with the basics- clean sheets and towels. Our room in Ryokan Ohto did not appear to have ever been cleaned, it had a stale smell to it, the bedsheets evidently had not...

I would not say it a bad place. First of all this was difficult for me to find this place. Second was the language problem. There was no English speaking staff. There was only one lady who was doing everything. I reached there at 11pm, all the doors were open but no body was present in office. Somehow I managed...

Owner overcharged compared to our booking price. Room was noisy, can hear everything next door and from the street. Bathroom and toilet was down the hallway so have to share and was inconvenient. Wouldn't recommend it. Location wasn't too bad, there's Maccas and restaurant around and half an hour walk from the town Center - gion district.

Want a classic Japanese styled hotel? Look elsewhere. Want a to use a small communal bath the size of the one in your home but yucky as well as a communal toilet that isn't the nice Japanese modern kind? Then this is your place. You can enjoy listening to your fellow suckers passing by as nothing stops the sound from...

Well, it's a valuable experience to try this Japanese style bedroom (aka tatami) if you visit Japan. The only problem is that you have to carry your luggage a to third floor thru stairway which was a challenge. The location is fine but still need to take a taxi. However, the front desk can help you call a cab. It's...

After reading all the comments we were very dubious of staying here but the location for what we wanted was very good and we were only using it as a base so decided to keep our booking. I wouldn't say it was the worst place we have ever stayed in but it certainly wasn't the best, the owner was ok...

The location and the price was very attractive, but the service was horrible. We couldn't receive the room because it was 30 minutes before official check in time. When we got the room it looked like it was cleaned just when we got there. We had to carry up our suitcases by ourselves 2 floors without elevator. In the room...

We were dubious after reading comments and yes the owner asked for 600yen more than advertised price, but we paid as it was so minimal and had a huge room for the two of us, with separate dressing area and balcony. Owner was very sweet and everything seemed very clean. I am surprised to hear these bad reviews having now...

A charming simple ryokan with tatami floor, futon beds and a japanese low table. Small room, but big enough for 3 persons and bags. Owner speaks only japanese, but is very friendly and ready to help. Location very good, with a subway station just around the corner, 1km from Kyoto station and 1,5km to Gion. Fridge on our floor, microwave...

“Rooms with ensuite are basically one metre by one and a half metre with a handbasin lodged between the deep bath and small toilet; very tight and certainly would not work for a larger framed person! Water is hot - bring your own toilet paper if you like a little luxury!”
