This is a small ryokan that combines the most marvelous aspects of a traditional ryokan with Western comfort. Yes, the bathroom is small, but it's there. Also, they have both traditional and Western rooms. We took a traditional room. The room was large (we booked a room that accomodated 4 for 3 people), and extremely clean. The staff is friendly...

A friend and I stayed at Nishiyama Ryokan for three nights while visiting Kyoto. This was my second visit to the Nishiyama and my friend's first visit. As before, the room was quite large, very clean with very comfortable futon beds, a tea table and tea set and a western bathroom. It was on a quiet street with a nice...

I found Nishiyama Ryokan from browsing through internet, because I wanted staying in the traditional house in japan. When I found the Nishiyama, I booked one nite over there. Since my booking, I have been treated very proper and professional by all the staff. They emailed me for confirming the booking, then they emailed me separately for explaining about the...

Stayed 1 night at the Ryokan on 26 Sep. The location was good and quite easy to locate. The room was bigger than expected and the service was great! Though the public bath was not natural hot spring, we still enjoyed ourselves soaking in it. The dinner spread was beautiful and delicious! Nearby the Ryokan, easy access to many shops...

We stayed for one night in September 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The traditional dinner was delicious and very impressively prepared. We enjoyed the unexpected chance to experience various Japanese cultural aspects (calligraphy and tea ceremony). The room was largely as expected with all traditional furniture, although we were surprised to find a TV. It was a very relaxing...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
