I had a lovely long weekend staying in one of their Western style rooms. Centrally located 5 minutes from the shinkensen station and downtown Kyoto it is a wonderful starting point for any travels around the town. I can't say enough good about the owners and staff as well. They were all very nice and helpful.

This place is incredible. All details are taken care of and they're nice to everyone. No surprises everything works, and they want to help as much h as they can. I left something in the room and I'm now in Osaka and they shipped it here from there. That's what I call service. Close to Kyoto station and currently expanding...

Chose this hotel online, as I wanted to live the experience of sleeping in a typical, old-style Japanese room. The ryokan is a 10 minute walk from Kyoto station in a very quiet street close to several bus stops leading all around Kyoto. Friendly and helpful English-speaking staff. I was skeptical about having to share the shower (in the corridor)...

Great location, resonably priced ryokan. Traditional japanese rooms with a garden view is very nice and great way to experince a ryokan. Superb staff. They were able to reccommend sight-seeing options and nearby good restaurants. Restaurants nearby were quaint and serve very good quality japanese food. Overall they made our holiday very memorable.

Matsubaya Ryokan is a great option for travellers that want the basic ryokan experience without spending too much money in Kyoto! Just a few minutes walking distance from Kyoto station its location is very central (trains, buses) and there are even two places for rental bikes closeby. Despite the central location it is surprising how quiet it really is. I...

The location of the hotel is great, just a few minutes walk from the main station. Therefore great connections to all sight-seeing places in Kyoto. The staff is super friendly and helpful which makes the experience even more enjoyable. We stayed in a traditional room, which was very nice and clean. (It looks exactly like the pictures) Can only recommend...

- Super friendly and helpful staff - We stayed at a G-type room with ensuite bathroom and found it spacious, clean and enjoyable - Fantastic Japanese ryokan experience - Terrific location between train station and downtown so walking distance to both The ryokan is currently under construction to add 7 new Japanese style rooms so there was a strong odor...

We stayed here for five nights, using Kyoto as a base for visiting a number of nearby towns. The staff here were very helpful throughout our visit and gave good advice on how to get around Kyoto and where to eat. The hotel is clean but facilities are quite basic. The location is very convenient for Kyoto station but still...

What an amazing place to stay! Check in was easy and the man serving me was very pleasant, helpful and spoke perfect English. He presented me with a map and showed me all the main sights and how to get there. I stayed in the standard western twin room. The room was large and great value for money. I really...

This was an absolutly best experince and the best little Ryokan. It was so cute and we stayed five days in traditional Japanese style room and two nights in ordinary room because they were fully booked when we booked it. We really really liked this little friendly Ryokan. It is not a fancy exclusive ryokan but a simple yet cozy...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
