This hidden gem has it all. The friendliest and most welcoming staff ( some English is spoken) kindness and consideration all set in as tranquil Japanese setting. This must be the pinnacle of traditional Japanese Ryokan hospitality with a calmness and civility that enchants. Worth whatever detour you need to make!

After much deliberation between Shiraume and Tawaraya I decided to go with the latter based off the history and reputation. Although I have no comparison I do wish I had chosen Shiraume. For starters Shiraume is in a much more appealing area. It is situated next to the river in the Geisha district. Additionally, the food is supposed to be...

It was a tough choice deciding which ryokan to go to for our wedding anniversary. We ended up at Tawaraya. It is a simple ryokan with great service. It's very relaxing. Peace resonates and you completely feel away from everyone else. The location is great to go for walks around the town and then come back to seclusion. The food...

Tawaraya stands for ultimate refinement and elegance. A benchmark for quality and the best statement to prove that less is more. For someone with an appreciation for a Ryokan, Tawaraya is probably the best hotel on Earth (stayed in August 2014).

Service is beyond reproach. Room was spartan and authentic. Expensive, but an experience beyond the 5 star hotel. No furniture, no coffee maker. Superlative food but unapologetically Japanese. Wonderful memory. Would be fabulous honeymoon for the culturally literate.

Stayed for two nights. This was the perfect introduction to traditional Kyoto culture. Understated with attention to each detail. Very traditional food, so be prepared for the unknown and for big, elaborate breakfasts. If staying two nights, recommend having second dinner at related restaurant down the street. Expensive but worth the splurge for a pure Kyoto experience.

I have to agree with Conrad Hilton. It is the best hotel that I have ever stayed in over many years of travelling. No frills, just perfect service and attention to detail. Tranquility. A charming lady in waiting. Wonderful room, with private bathroom and garden.

This establishment has no online booking, it relies on its outstanding reputation. So here's my recommendation- go there, even if it's only for one night of your life. We booked this Ryokan way ahead of time as part of our honeymoon after reading about its reputation in the lonely plant guide. Or so we thought! When we were in Tokyo...

This 300-year-old inn is located on an unassuming street behind a simple facade that does not indicate you are about to enter a place of elegant serenity in the middle of Kyoto's hustle and bustle. You feel more like a house guest than a hotel guest because everything is provided to you in your room by a personal attendant --...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
