When I first came to this ryokan, I was hesitant because of the negative reviews. However, the staff was very welcoming and helpful. They showed us some places to travel to and welcoming. There were fresh sheets and linen to sleep on, hot tea, and a tv to watch in case you got bored (we never got bored). Everything felt...

The location of this ryokan was probably its best feature. The rooms were very small, and the walls were so thin that we could hear others' conversations. Our room also had an unpleasant cabbage-like odor. At least there was an air conditioner, which made the temperature comfortable. The futons were the least comfortable out of the 4 ryokans in which...

I went to Kyoto during a very busy time and it was hard to find a single room! The owner was very kind since the beginning: it was easy to make a reservation and she gave all details how to get to the ryokan. It is centrally located, in a very traditional area which is very quiet. It might be...

Since I stayed at the Hiraiwa three years ago (see the below review), I was confident about staying there with my husband on our belated honeymoon. Reservations went smoothly through email. It was harder to find this time, but only because we couldn't get off of the bus at the correct stop -- it was packed to the gills, we...

My husband and I stayed at this Ryokan for 4 nights during a recent holiday in Japan and found that is made an excellent base for sightseeing around Kyoto. Its location is quite good – it’s a little way out of the central shopping/restaurant district (about 20-30min walk) but less than 10 min walk from the main Kyoto train station....

A quick word on ryokans in general, we stayed in 3, the Sawanoya and the Kimi in Tokyo and the Hiraiwa in Kyoto. In each room there was an unpleasant smell, that even my nasally challenged husband was bothered by and it was impossible to get any fresh air circulating. Also we suffered from lots of bites on our legs...

Don't expect a luxurous place... I did not. For the price it is a good option, compare to the others Ryokan I stayed in, it was much cheaper. Location is fine. Not too far from the central staion, on many bus route. The owner speaks a bit of english. Curfew was not really clear but looked like you can't get...

It is a nice place, the staff are great and a couple of them speak great english. It is quite cheap, but the rooms are nice - i slept really well every night. It is about 20-25 minutes walk from Kyoto station, or about 15 minutes from Gojo subway station It is a Ryokan, if you have never stayed at...

We stayed at this hotel in March 2006 for two nights. Although it is definitely budget lodging, it is clean and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The location is good (1 block from the river and a 15 minute walk to the Gion), and it is in a quiet residential neighborhood. The Japanese breakfast is delicious (they also...

I stayed for 3 days in this Ryokan during a quick visit to Kyoto, and they offer great value for money. Its good points include: Nice central location. The Kyoto station, downtown, Gion, and some of the temples are all on walkable distance. (Allthough one should just rent a bicycle to explore Kyoto). Friendly staff. The owner of the Ryokan...
