Found this charming Ryokan thanks to Le Guide du Routard and stayed there in January 2011 for four nights. Two friends came to join me and liked it too. The owners - two women - were very nice and helpful. The location was great, not too far from the Station and easy to walk to. Nice little street . I... More

Stayed for 3 nights. On the 1st night that we reach Kansai Airport, it was already about 1030pm after we clear the custom at Kansai Airport. We informed Ryokan owner that we will be late and by the time we reach the Ryokan, it's about 1am. Luckily the owner is still awake to wait for us. We are staying at... More

Stayed here for 2 nights, Staff was OK, could have been more friendlier though. There is a sento/public bath nearby, which is not so bad. Location feel a bit out the place, you need a long walk or take a bus to reach the center of the city. pros : Price -obviously- cons : location

I stumbled onto this Ryokan when I could not find anything else end of November 2011. First of all I must say I am NOT a Ryokan person. Sleeping on futons on tatami floors at this Ryokan was fine for me but I had the hardest time struggling to get off the floor every morning as my knees don't work... More

Stayed 4 Nights. Room is clean and big. Staffs & Owner were accommodating, polite and can speak english. If you consider the price in for all these I think its a great deal and the location is not too bad either.

Ryokujo area, you could walk from ShowSeiYen garden, where the bus stop called "Kawaramachi-Showmen" from just 5min. walk. Or you could catch cab from JR Kyoto station, i think roughly JPY 1,000...... anyway, the pension is places in between canal "Takasegawa" and river "Kamo" residential area, tranquil and cool temperature compare than other areas. A resident woman who i met... More

During a year living in Japan, we found travel very expensive and looked for good bargains in traditional settings. A French friend of ours found this ryokan in a well-known French guide, and we first stayed with her there on a cold January weekend--and stayed cozily warm. We stayed there four other weekends throughout the late winter and spring, and... More

When I first came to this ryokan, I was hesitant because of the negative reviews. However, the staff was very welcoming and helpful. They showed us some places to travel to and welcoming. There were fresh sheets and linen to sleep on, hot tea, and a tv to watch in case you got bored (we never got bored). Everything felt... More

The location of this ryokan was probably its best feature. The rooms were very small, and the walls were so thin that we could hear others' conversations. Our room also had an unpleasant cabbage-like odor. At least there was an air conditioner, which made the temperature comfortable. The futons were the least comfortable out of the 4 ryokans in which... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
