Nice place, friendly staff and clean. You can walk from the station or take a bus. One-day ticket for bus is 500 yen, very god because every sightseeing-points are a bit off. Use the bus 205 or 17 from the guesthouse to the Gion-district.

• Host/s: The desk staff we saw all spoke good English and were welcoming. We were shown around the inn and everything we needed to know about was explained to us. • Value for money: Not too badly priced for Kyoto. The room itself was well worth the price. Very pleasant looking and comfortable, traditional style Japanese room with tatami...

The Ryokan was great, very well situated about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Kyoto and with easy reach of transportation. The staff were very friendly and welcoming...couldnt do enough for you. Facilities were first class with plenty of showers and bathrooms Only downside...the closest subway will not accept (or didnt when we were there) JR Rail passes...but...

Quiet, easy place to stay. The same family has owned it for many years and they are experienced with foreigners. I've stayed there many times over the space of 20 years and always found it clean, well-managed and relaxing. It's definitely not spacious or fancy, but it's traditional and cozy.

-- This hotel building is an old Japanese style wooden house. For passengers love Japanese style house, this will be a good choice. The staffs are pretty good. Rooms are comfortable, but might be noisy due to it's an old wooden house. The toilets and bathroom are shared. It's a little far from Kyoto station to this hotel, but...

This is a beautiful inn but not user friendly. They turned off the taps in the bathroom between 4pm to 10pm. So strictly no bathing / shower after 10pm. The doors in the toilets made loud noises & users simply slammed the doors in the middle of the night, interrupting sleep. I will never use it again.

My stay at this ryokan was delightful. It's a small place with few rooms, and it is a short walk from Kyoto station. The rooms are comfortable with effective AC, the staff is gracious and helpful - when it rained heavily on my way back to the hotel, they offered me a towel to dry off before I entered the...

The location of this place is not particulary interesting, but it was close to my destinations, so nothing to complain about there! Transport is not far away either. The hotel is clean, staff is friendly (although I didn't understand anything they said), I can especially vouch for the nice lady that served our breakfast! They did their best to serve...

The very traditional Japanese-style hotel. I booked the room online recommended by the other hotel. I like the environment and the boss. And the traffic there is very good, you can buy the 1-day bus ticket there. The important is the reasonable price. It is a pity that there are no Japanese-style food!

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
