We spent a week at the Royal Hotel in the fall, and would gladly return the next time we are in Kyoto. The hotel is clean and comfortable, and the staff members are friendly, efficient, warm, and helpful. Our double-bed room was small, but well-appointed, with two comfortable chairs, a desk, a small fridge, and luggage space--no cupboards or dresser,...

Due to our stay commencing Christmas Day and although booking more than 9 months in advance vacancies in international hotels in our preferred location we're tight. Location is good although metro is a 7-10 min walk away but it isn't a problem as streets and footpaths are wide and flat. Rooms are of a good size and amenities, reception, housekeeping...

Dear AussieGypsyBoy, Thank you for your generous comments regarding your recent stay at our hotel. We are thankful that you enjoyed our location, size of your room and our service. I really love the location as it is conveniently located in the shopping and food district of Kyoto and easily accessible from the train station and to other attractions via bus or train. If you get a high floor, you will get an excellent view of the mountain and river. It is value for money as the hotel in Japan...

This hotel is centrally located with easy access to public transport. We had a "suite" for our family of 4. It was spacious and comfortable compared to Tokyo and Hiroshima accommodation we had. We had two separate bedrooms with plenty of space. Excellent range of Japanese and Western breakfast. The only downside to our room was the noisy main road,...

We booked 2 rooms for 3 nights for our family of 4. The rooms are in the smaller side, but just perfect for 2 people. Our rooms on the 9th floor did not have any view but overlooks this open barren space. Not a deal breaker for us as we were out all day and just return to the hotel...

We stayed 3 nights here with our 10 year old son - had a 3 bed room - excellent space and ambience. Great facilities and amenities also. Only minor complaint is that we couldn't really control the air-conditioning and the temperature was way too warm to be comfortable. Also a bit strange that there is no obvious entrance from the...

The hotel is just at downtown, there are many restaurants and shops nearby (within 5 minutes of walk). The breakfast buffet is okay inside the hotel but you can take a hot coffee or Japanese breakfast outside. JR station and bus stops are also just outside. The twin room is spacious when compared with those at Tokyo and Osaka.

The location was very good, near public transport, near lots of restaurants and shopping. The rooms are pretty good, they were very clean and had the necessary amenities. The bathroom was clean, it was just a standard hotel bathroom. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to first time travelers as you can't beat the location and the price.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
