We stayed here in November, Keiko was a fantastic host and the breakfast was a great way to meet fellow travellers. You could get anywhere on the bus, and you were close to the station for Nara (beautiful). If you want a taste of real Japan, try here!

Hennka is a simple no frills Japanese run bed and breakfast accommodation. On the plus side, the bed room is rather big and there is adjoining bathroom and toilet. You also feel that you are living in an authentic Japanese neighbourhood. On the negative side, the place is out of the way and not easily accessible. Twice, the taxis that...

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely guesthouse. The owners were very friendly and helpful. It was a 20 minute walk from the JR line and a 10 minute walk to the bus stop. The place is located in a quiet neighborhood up a hill. You felt like you were out in the countryside and not near a big city....

We stayed in the guest house behind the main property, which is quiet and surrounded by beautiful landscaping. The hosts couldn't have been nicer, and it was really cool staying in a local neighborhood rather than right in the middle of the bustling city. Yes, it's a hike up the hill, but it's worth it, and there's a bus stop...

My partner and I were pleasantly surprised by our stay. It was our first guest house experience and it was awesome. It's family run and you see them throughout your stay. When you first arrive, the wife provides you with a map of Kyoto and helpful tips to get around the city such as bus routes. The room is much...

This was the highlight of our trip to Japan. First, my apologies to the staff at Hennka that it has taken so long for me to write this review. When looking for Ryokan's in Kyoto, this place caught my eye due to its location. It is far enough away from the city center, yet close enough we could be at...

We stay in family room. The room is super clean and nicely decorated. Japanese Futon bed is super comfy. Unbelievable price with breakfast. The couple is the best host I ever met. They tried to help us as much as they can. Very nice view for Kyoto night. The guesthouse is not far from Gion, just JPY1,000 by taxi. Will...

We stayed with a family of 4 in the family room, which has got its own bathroom facility. Even considering the drawbacks, we liked the place very much. The japanese style room was clean and featured with all amenities you can reasonably expect in that price range. But the best thing there was the atmosphere. the location is slighty out...

This is a family run place and it really shows! Fantastic homely atmosphere and the staff really do take an interest in each and every traveller, make you feel welcome and help out in any way that they can. Great showers, clean and spacious dorm room and eggs/bread breakfast in the morning. The hostel is, however, a good 15 minute...

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
