This is the second hotel I stayed in Kyoto. Before going to Aman, I read some of posts here that the service was bad. I then quite regret to make a room reservation though I was impressed by the photos and posts from website. Besides, I had a bad first impression toward Aman Kyoto as they replied email for at least 3 days. This is not acceptable for such hotel with high room rate.

When I arrived the hotel for the first day, I was quite surprised by the service. The hotel staff load my luggages from taxi efficiently and sent them to rooms directly. Then I was guided by another staff for check-in. She served me and my child a cup of green tea. This green tea is very special. Its taste is green tea but has a floral smell. My kid and I were very impressed. Unfortunately, I forgot to buy one before leaving.

Then we went to Living Pavilion to have lunch. After lunch, our room was ready and a staff took us to the room and introduced us the facilities.

The room is spacious, even the bathroom. We stayed in room 楢 . It is near the Living Pavilion, hotel’s restaurant. It is quite quiet. For our staying of two nights, we almost had dinner in room. The Udon noodle tastes good. My son ate it in lunch time and two dinner time. The hotel also provides welcome desserts for every night. First night is dried persimmon and the second night is chocolates. The chocolates are very very yummy.

I tried the spa massage for two times. It is really good. As only me and my son in this trip, he couldn’t use the complimentary onsen. I then paid for a private onsen. It is very comfortable.

The room’s pillows are very hard. My kid and I didn’t have a good sleep. We asked the front desk to give us a softer one for second night. It still doesn’t fit for me. Thus I didn’t sleep well during my stay.

The breakfast had three choices: Western, Japanese and wellness. We tried western and Japanese breakfast. Both are delicious. Especially French toast in western style and porridge in Japanese style. The taste is unforgettable.

The hotel environment is very comfortable. It is far away from the city. Only trees and grass around us. Everywhere has fresh air. It refreshes me. If the bed and pillow fit me, it will be perfect.

We also had lunch in Tak-An restaurant. The food is good. The staffs are very nice and kids-friendly. They are very tolerant to kids.

The check-out process is also very smooth. Everything is well-prepared, even our luggages. We booked a transportation to the Kansai Airport through the hotel. The driver is nice.

Unlike many of the other Aman's, Aman Kyoto is conveniently located near several iconic Kyoto must sees. Surrounded by a serene and tranquil forest and like any other Aman, Aman Kyoto was an amazing experience. The suites blend a traditional ryokan-inspired aesthetic with detailed, yet minimalistic elements. I spent most of my days here relaxing in my room, walking around the trail, and dining at the living pavilion with my family. Dining at the pavillion was truly an experience like none other. Eavan provided a 10 out of 10 dining experience. Even when she was not working, she went out of her way to make sure we were accommodated properly and our meals were arranged smoothly the night before. Not only could I tell she was extremely passionate about what she did, she communicated everything clearly in perfect English (which I noticed is a small problem in the general for Japan's service industry). There was one small issue we encountered. Their breakfast dining seems to get extremely and the staff seemed extremely flustered and slightly undertrained. They seated the 3 of us at a 2 person table and added a 3rd seat to have us squeeze, then gave us a small side table (normally used to hold bags/purses) for our food that couldn't fit on the table. So we ended up placing some of our food and drinks on that small side table since the dining table was way too small for 3. This was a bit unprofessional, but it wasn't a big deal, so we didn't say anything. Definitely a bit unexpected for what standard Aman service is normally like. I think Aman Kyoto needs a bigger dinning pavilion to accommodate a full house OR they should prearrange slightly larger tables if they already know there are a number of guests that have 2+ parties coming in for breakfast. This shouldn't be too hard to prepare ahead of time since they only have 26 suites. On our second day of breakfast we got there earlier so got a suitable table, but I saw the same issue happen to another group of 3 and they were squeezed into a table for 2. Anyway, other than this the stay was seamless and superb. I've stayed at a lot of luxury hotels and know if every hotel had an Eavan or more people who had her standard of work ethic and passion, no one would ever get complaints. Regardless, we'll be back again later this year with other family members so hopefully by then they'll have figured out how to accommodate breakfast dining better or maybe train the rest of the staff to be more like Eavan.

We stayed at Aman Kyoto for birthday celebration, and it was an unforgettable travel experience that offered you a close connection to the nature.

The staff who helped us with check-in, was a hospitable and energetic girl. She guided us to our room at the Hotaru Pavilion, which was at the very end of the resort, and gave us a lovely room introduction.

Designed by Kerry Hill, the hotel incorporated Japanese simplicity into its architecture while using local rocks as building materials that paved the major paths of Aman Kyoto. It was nice that the room here gives half of its space to the bathroom that comes with a floor heating system.

The spa, or onsen, here was fantastic. We recommend trying the outdoor onsen, as it provides great privacy while gives you a glimpse to the starry sky at night. As there are not only 26 rooms in the hotel, many times you can enjoy the onsen on your own.

The food here was designed by the executive chef Kentaro, and many of the dishes were just amazing. In addition, staff at the restaurant were hospitable and eager to help, say Galina, Mina, manager Hiroshi, and Chef Kentaro himself. They chatted with guests like close friends. We were sitting at the sofa area in front of the restaurant after breakfast, and upon noticing us, Hiroshi and Mina walked out of the restaurant to give us blanket and hot tea to keep us warm in the chilly morning. It's these trivial but considerate actions that distinguish Aman Kyoto from other luxury hotels we've stayed over the years.

The suites have truly superb architecture and the environment is beautiful. But the hotel falls short on the lack of a pool, fitness, library, limited food choices and a wider selection of recreation opportunities. At the price level of this hotel, it’s outright annoying that there’s no shuttle bus, that a bike rental would cost 5000 Yen and that rooms only become available at 3pm. It’s brand new, let’s hope they can make changes and reach the standard of the best Aman resorts.

I'll preface this by saying I'm a big fan of the Aman resorts generally, and don't mind paying up for the best hotels if they actually provide an experience worth the price - but Aman Kyoto falls so far short that there's really no way to come close to justifying it. $4,000+ per night, for a hotel that has no gym, no pool, a very small and limited spa, in a not particularly convenient location, is just absurd. I think it's a shame that the Aman is pricing this place at such an absurd rate.

On top of that, I should add that there's actually a pretty big difference between staying in the various buildings on the property, which is not really apparent on the website. I was initially booked in a Susuki room, which I was pretty shocked to find felt not only slightly subterranean (as you take a flight of steps down from ground level), but even worse could actually see a street and passing cars through some thin plantings the hotel has tried to place to offer some privacy. That's just absurd for a hotel at this rate, and it is really a joke that the hotel thinks it's reasonable not to price these rooms substantially lower than the rest of the property. To the hotel's credit, they moved me to a better room at no extra charge, if not for which I would rate it 2 stars.

The forest setting in the hotel is quite beautiful and atmospheric (though quite dark, so it can be a matter of taste - some friends of mine who visited shortly after me didn't like the setting either), but sadly the rest of the hotel just doesn't meet the standards of many of the other Amans I've been to. I wouldn't return.

Response from Atsushi Shibata, General Manager at Aman Kyoto

Dear Mr. RamblingRambler We wish to express our sincere appreciation for having chosen us during your recent visit to Kyoto and taking the time to share your staying experience with us via TripAdvisor. It is honor to hear that you enjoyed our forest garden and atmosphere of hidden sanctuary. However, I'm disappointed to learn that the price was way too high considering the limited amenities such as the absence of a gym, pool, and a small spa. While Aman is known for a luxury resort, it's essential that guests feel they are getting value for the price they pay. It's understandable and we have been working on those issues and offering some alternative options since it may take somemore time to fix them due to local regulations. And for the view from Susuki room, your valuable feedback has been addressed and we have already been working on it. We truly appreciate your valuable feedback that highlights some important areas where Aman Kyoto can improve to meet the standards expected from a luxury resort. It's essential for us to take your feedback into consideration to enhance its offerings and provide a more satisfying experience for future guests. Once again, thank you for your feedback and hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Aman Kyoto in the future. Sincerely, Atsushi Shibata General Manager

When I just checked in, I was amazed by the autumn leaves of Aman Kyoto. The overall green vegetation was well maintained. When I checked in, Atsushi-San, the general manager of Aman, came to introduce the history of Aman Kyoto. It is indeed Aman, choose The address is still outstanding.

The setting of the hotel is still very good, it is in line with Aman's standards, and the service level is also very good, but it can still be improved. The ingredients are very good and fresh, and they are all selected from local ingredients in Kyoto.

Aman Kyoto covers a huge area. I spent a few hours and didn't finish visiting all of them. It is also very beautiful to take a walk and enjoy the autumn leaves in the autumn leaf season in November.

Aman Kyoto. The forgettable zen experience in Kyoto Japan. I stayed in room 08. My morning felt like a gigantic art picture in front of me. The onsen spring was super relaxing. Top-notch amenities with Marvis toothpaste set and high quality details everywhere. The outdoor area with fireplace, I can sit there all day to feel the amazing nature in total green. Picture and video can’t describe enough how beautiful it was. You must hear about all the history of how this place was created from general manager Mr. Akira Shiota, it will touch your heart and appreciate even more of this gem in Kyoto.

This is 5000USD per night hotel but you have got is just 500USD hotel level. Hotel Charge a lot but did not prepare anything to make guest feels home as they always said.

I really don't understand why Aman Kyoto is so expensive. Location is not good at all. The room is ok , but a bit small. The Main dining room is very small. 90% are trees. So there is no common space to enjoy. No gym No pool. It was boring staying here.

So I would give a 3-4 stars if the price is like 1000USD , but this is way far overprice. This is my 16th Aman so I think I know how Aman is.

I think the properties looks deserted , unlively , nothing to enjoy. Welcome and Farewell part is also disappointed.

Service is ok , Standard but not exceptional. Food is ok but should be better.

Finally , I encourage GM or Staffs to go other Aman all around the world to see How standard Aman is. I have to say you are ruin Aman brand.

Nice hotel in quiet forest setting.
Unfortunately highly overpriced.
Prices of up to 5000 USD per night not justified. No gym, no pool, mediocre excursion programs, ok but not great breakfast.
All in all a disappointing experience. We have stayed at multiple Amans before but were very disappointed by this one.

Went to the hotel by taxi from the nearest station.
A bit far away from city so you can enjoy the relax environment in it.

The food is good and the place is nice.

Just most of the areas is limited for guest so cannot fully enjoy it.
