So gladly surprised of this ryokan! Got it through japanican.com as it was fairly cheap for cherry blossom season (11000Y a night for 2 people). The ryokan is beautiful. Traditional rooms and common areas with modern bathrooms. Everything is extremely well cleaned and the owner is very kind and helpful. Definitely the best place I've stayed in Kyoto in my...

Minshuku Koumekawa is a small family-run inn in the district of HIgashiyama conveniently located about 4 mins walk from the subway station Higashiyama. The inn is about 10 mins walk from Gion and a stone's throw from the river alongside the Philosopher's Walk. The owner does not speak English well but they are very welcoming and friendly and we thoroughly...

I stayed here for five days and loved it. I really felt like a guest for the time that I stayed there. Umetani, the proprietor, was really wonderful to be around and was very helpful. The location is terrific, right next to the Higashiyama subway station and the rooms are very pleasant. I stayed in a single occupancy room which...

Have a great stay in Koumekawa, the owner 梅谷さん is very kind and friendly. The room and living area are really clean and full with lovely decoration. You can also see a cute painting by famous Hayao Miyazaki. The location is convenient and a bike rental nearby which can easier reach some of the famous spots. It's a wonderful to...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
