I was just in Kyoto and Osaka. I stayed in this guest house, a budget ryokan and a business hotel. I also went to a minshuku. Of all of these lodgings, this place really felt the most Japanese. True, the floors creak, there is one shower, etc. but I appreciated the experience despite these small inconveniences. People were considerate and...

Enjoyed my 3 nights stay at this guesthouse. The futon was comfy and had a good sleep. It is extremely quiet at night though, that I can hear snippets of conversation of my opposite room neighbour. There is a 24hr small supermarket about 2mins walk away.

It was very easy to get there from the Gion-shijo subway exit 1, probably within 1-2 minute walk. We arrived before the offical check-in time. But the front desk lady told us the room was ready, and we could check-in and settled our things there. It is an authentic old Japan house which made of wood, dim lights, living/common rooms...

Rakuza is located in the ancient quartier of Gion, in the centre of Kyoto. There are many traditional restaurants and beautiful gift shops around. The ryokan is entirely traditional style, clean and confortable. They provide a laptop, free wifi, hair dryer and some fruits in the morning in the lobby. They rent bikes for 500 yen/day. We took them for...

.. I suggest you to stay here. It's very affordable yet it gives you that authentic feeling. We stayed there for two nights after our trip to Hiroshima and we decided to stay in a ryokan after a series of stay in business hotel to experience living in a real traditional Japanese house. The ryokan, to our surprise, is not...

This is a small guesthouse in a fantastic traditional building. Wooden walls and doors, with mat flooring - shoes do need to be removed when inside. Sliding doors, and I liked there was a padlock on the door, which has not been the case in other places. We stayed in Dec so the air con was not needed. We were...

I changed my booking so many times when coming here (felt awful for it), however they were very patient and did not charge me any extra for it. When I got there, I got a tour of the building - which is lovely to see from the inside as it is different than anything I've ever been in in England...

We were keen to experience more traditional Japanese accommodation rather than staying in a Western-style hotel, and to accept any differences from what we're accustomed to. We enjoyed staying in this beautiful old house, even though negotiating the one shared bathroom and two toilets was more challenging than the hard sleeping surface. There seemed to be a lot of women...

I travelled with 3 female friends and we stayed in 2 Japanese style twin rooms at Rakuza for 3 nights second week of December 2010. My purpose for choosing Rakuza was to have a taste of living in a real Japanese home and secondly, I wanted to stay as close to Gion as possible. I wasn’t disappointed… The 100 year...

We stayed at Rakuza for 3 nights during our recent Japan holiday. The house has basic amenities [no cooking, shared bathroom etc] but is everything I expected and more! http://rakuza.gh-project.com/e/home.html We booked well in advance, and were lucky enough to stay in the duluxe room which was on the top floor overlooking the river. It has charm, character and for...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

“We chose the Western Double Room, but if I wasn't on such a budget, I would've chosen a traditional room. The Western Double Room, though small (like everything in Japan), was perfectly adequate for two adults, including suitcases, etc.”

“The deluxe room is said to faced the Kamo River. We would like to take that room but it was fully booked during our stay. Staying on the Twin Room on the first floor is also another affordable option, but then you will have to hear people going through in front of your door (it's right next to the stairs) everytime.”
