My experience was perhaps a little different, in that I was travelling with a group of 9 people, and we were staying in a separate property attached to this Ryokan which was an entire house, I did not experience the service of the ryokan itself but a couple who I was travelling with had stayed here before and loved it....

I booked last minute, so was happy to have a place to stay. Staff were friendly, but did not go out of their way like other places I experienced. The place was also a bit hard to find! Room was tiny, but I had one that included private restroom, which was nice. Breakfast was only available after 8am. This was...

I loved this Inn soooo much! The room was small but cozy, the futon was comfy, everything was clean and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Also loved the girl that helped me with the kimono experience they offer.

My 11 year-old daughter and I stayed here because a friend of a friend, who we had met years earlier, works here. We wanted to stay in a budget ryokan and this fit the bill and more. Mizuki (staff) is wonderful and was such a help to us. The room was a small and cozy traditional tatami room with fold-up...

Wonderfully tucked away, 20 mins walk from the train station, the staff greeted us warmly in their traditional garb. Simple form filling and upstairs to a four tatami mat bedroom with a tiny but very clean bathroom, oh and nice air con!!! Nice and quiet with other guests well behaved, thin walls so everyone is kind and thoughtful. We had...

We stayed here in 9 days. On the first floor there was a living room, kitchen and bathroom. We spent a lot of time here, watching TV, planning trips, cooking breakfast and dinner. The kitchen has a microwave, electric stove, a small oven, a big fridge and almost all necessary utensils, very nice and modern. The bathroom was quite spacious,...

Takes about 15min walking from the Central station (the website has a very good guide on how to find this place). Nagomi is on a quiet street, in a lovely neighbourhood and the staff are friendly. Did not rent bikes from Nagomi, but I think it would be great for getting around. We did go on a bike tour while...

Nagomi is not for those seeking space, luxury and five star service. But if you want an authentic machi ya experience and really BE in japan, you will love this place as it is charming. You will sleep on the tatami floor, sit on the tatami floor and be in a quiet, typical neighborhood. All the staff speak english and...

Staff was very helpful during our stay, they provided us handy tips for sightseeing and recommended us to his fav Ramen place in town. Location of the hostel can be a good walk from main road, we rented a bike for 500yen for the day and that make it so much easier for us to get around town. Breakfast from...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
