The location of this hotel, which is actually one and the same building with Ryokan Sakura, is wonderful for a first-timer to Kyoto. Situated in a very old neighborhood across from the beautiful Nishi Honganji temple, it is perfect for evening strolls and daytime shopping in the old and rare Buddhist shops surrounding it. It's a short walk or a...

We spent 3 nights in early November. We walked from the train station and had a hard time finding it from the website; I expect they've fixed that! The rooms were very clean and the staff super friendly and helpful (they even mailed something we had left behind to an acquaintance in Tokyo!) The location was great for walking: getting...

Kaede Ryokan and Sakura Ryokan are one and the same property. A good 10 minute walk from Kyoto station the property was a little difficult to find at first..but it's one street back from the main street on which Nishi Honganji can be found. The room was spotlessly clean.A lot of thought has gone into making this place feel traditionally...

Pros: - Nice room: Japanese style (like in the movies!) with traditional bedding and low table. There were clean Yukata in the rooms to wear that were enhancing our experience of the japanese tradition. - Friendly staff: speaking great english, helped us get bus tickets for the city and a map with all the bus routes, also to book the...

Pros: Good location in town -- close enough to walk, bike, or catch train to everything in Kyoto Excellent staff, especially the hostess Toko; perfect English, friendly, offered tourism advice, booked taxis and restaurants, printed boarding passes, etc Nice layout -- meals were convenient, rooms were VERY clean and perfect for a short stay. We did not have any problems...

What you get at Ryokan Sakura is a clean, lovely, divine-smelling Japanese style room with Japanese bedding, friendly english-speaking staff who will help you plan your day's activities and proximity to the kyoto station. Really the biggest pro here was the staff - they are genuinely friendly and patient and helpful. But you will pay a PRINCELY sum for these...

The place is wonderful if you want to spend few days in Kyoto experiencing the Japanese style rooms. Of course rooms are small, but the price and location and cleanliness makes this place worthwhile. The staff is friendly and extremely available. We asked for our luggages to be shipped to Tokyo (cause you cannot carry so many luggages with you...

We had a good stay for 2 nights in a japanese room. The room was clean and the ryokan is well kempt. I said in the title that it is a "light" ryokan, because it really is more like a McRyokan than the real deal, but if you want the tatami mat experience in a larger setting this if good....

Nice room, great service (staff speaks good to sufficient English), cultural activities offered regularly for a reasonable price in the evening (calligraphy, origami, talks with locals...). Optional breakfast (Western or Japanese). Lots of practical details on local attractions cared for. Price was good, too, for a modern ryokan, at least when booked early. We would love to stay there again...

Stayed 3 nights in Sakura Ryokan near Kyoto Station on Feb 22- 25 2013. Very warm and friendly staff, able to give very good advice on transport and place to visit. Ryokan is located within a small alley 2 st from Kyoto Station, not easy to find if you arrive at night. Also alley houses has no unit number. Suggest...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
