Thank you very much for staying at our Japanese-style hotel 、Toshiharu Japanese-style hotel. And you'll write thankful word-of-mouth communication, and I appreciate. If there is a chance to come to Kyoto again, I'm waiting by all means.

This was our first trip to Japan and Kyoto and we loved staying in a traditional small Ryokan (7 rooms total) the pictures are accurate. Definitely have the Japanese breakfast of many lovely bowls of different tastes. The hosts are very attentive and speak some English. We loved that couples could use the onsen together (there is a Japanese bath...

Thank you very much for staying at our Japanese-style hotel 、Toshiharu Japanese-style hotel. And you'll write thankful word-of-mouth communication, and I appreciate. I think that I couldn't use wifi, and I apologize for that. Free wifi of all the rooms can usually use our Japanese-style hotel. If there is a chance to come to Kyoto again, I'm waiting by all...

Excellent hospitality, lovely place and wonderful experience. We arrived quite early and left late but were able to leave our luggage here. In fact, before our check in, the host took our things and put them in the room. Loved this glimpse of cultural experience!

After a day of sightseeing, coming back to this ryokan is bliss. It's more than 160 years old and the glass is 100 years old, the proud lady owner says. Yes the futon is a bit thin but the baths are modern. The old wood floors creak but then they are160 years old. Guests must remember to speak softly and...

The rooms were lovely although the futons were a little uncomfortable. Probably quite traditional but I have slept on many with more padding in the mattresses. The place was very clean and the bathroom a great experience for an authentic Japanese soak in the tub. The walls are very thin so the other guests talking kept us up for a...

My wife and I spent three nights here. The owners really went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable even though we made a few errors with the customs and culture. You probably know about sleeping on the floor and sharing the bathroom. I did not enjoy sleeping on the floor but I would not have missed the...

My husband and I had a fantastic experience staying at Toshiharu Ryokan. We stayed in the room on the ground floor with a private garden. The room was clean and comfortable and very basic - as it should be. The weather at the time was chilly....which made the room, the bed and the heated floor pads absolutely divine. The bed...

Despite of the name of the hotel, I think this place is more like Minshuku (B&B) rather than Ryokan (up scale traditional hotel). Being a Japanese and grew up at traditional Japanese house, it was like I came back to my grand ma's. The room I stayed was small but enough to sleep overnight and cozy. You can see and...

Can't say enough good thing about this place. Stayed there December 2014 with a family of 4 with 2 teens. Fantastic hosts - communication was a bit of a challenge, but we were always met with welcome smiles and kind gestures. If anything the communication challenge only added to the experience. Beautiful rooms and gardens with cool narrow hallways connecting...

My friend and I were looking for a place where we can enjoy the ryokan experience and Toshiharu gave us just that! Firstly, the service was just impeccable, from her warm smile to welcome us back from the cold streets outside to the prompt hot tea and sweets as we drop our weary bodies down in our room. She then...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
