Staff guided us to the special activities in town-temple and shrine lighting with street vendors, and a monthly antique market at Toji Shrine! These ladies are Excellent resources! Rooms very clean and comfortable. Fabulous traditional dinner that I could never order on my own!

We stayed here during Christmas 2015. The inn was small and intimate. The services were superb. The staff were always greeting us, smiling and very thoughtful and attentive to our needs. They recommended restaurants and helped us to book, gave us tips. The beds were so comfortable, better than the hot spring hotel we stayed later in Hakone. Highly recommend...

We loved staying at Obanabo. The authenticity and friendliness of the staff was terrific! The communal baths were different to what we are accustomed to and took a bit of getting use to but was all apart of the experience. The breakfast was tasty and great tradition. This hotel isn't just your accommodation it's an experience of Japan. All the...

Absolutely beautiful property with personal service. Perfect for those seeking a quiet retreat while enjoying authentic cuisine and the best of Japanese service. The rooms are simple and gorgeous and a small onsite onsen is wonderful for those traveling in colder months.

My expectations for Ohanabo were high given its stellar ratings on Tripadvisor, and my stay there confirmed its excellent status. To begin with, the service there was the best I've experienced anywhere - all staff were extremely cheerful, friendly and hospitable, and they were always happy to go the extra mile to help with little things like how to get...

10mins walk to the train station so if you are doing day trips to nara or osaka this is perfect. The rooms are very nice. The bigger ones have toilet and the smaller ones don't. But the shared toilet was nice and clean and always available. There were Many of them too so no worries. The shared bath is cozy...

We really wanted to try the ryokan experience and we chose this one because of the great reviews. We stayed for four nights and it was a great experience. The accommodation is (not surprisingly) pretty basic with a futon on the floor that can be pretty uncomfortable if you are over 1m85. Actually for tall and not very flexible people...

Would recommend Ohanabo whole heartedly the most welcoming experience we've had during our entire japan trip. Felt like staying with family Positives: 1. Location - 5min walk from central Kyoto station 2. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Were kind enough to store our luggage when we arrived early and also when we left late. The best service we've experienced anywhere...

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon and we can't recommend it enough. The staff are very friendly and we found the room warm and comfortable. The pillows are a little strange ( made out of some kind of seeds?) but we found the bedding comfortable. They bring you lovely tea and treats when you check...

The location of this ryokan was easy to reach from Kyoto station. Staff are so polite, friendly and helpful. We had a very warm welcome here. There is a bike rental shop a few doors down - it was great to hire a bike and have the freedom to ride around Kyoto. The room we stayed in was spacious and...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
