We found out after arriving in Japan that a lot of accommodation is booked up early on, so we had very limited available options. Hence our stay at Tommy Rich Inn Kyoto. The location of this accommodation is pretty decent; within walking distance from the metro station. The staff were friendly however spoke limited English, but this was not a...

Hard to say what I might have found had a booked earlier, not waited to the last minute. The location certainly was great, within walking and bus distance of a lot of what you want to see in Kyoto. Not fancy. Sort of like a European pension, but with a shared shower, not a traditional Japanese bath. The front desk...

The secret to staying in Kyoto, particularly on weekends or holidays is to book really really early. I confess I failed on that one. As a result Tomy Rich was just about all that was available in a relatively central location. It also was one of the few left at the time I booked that offered a Japanese style accommodation....

We stayed in a room designed for two people, but asked for an extra bed. We were charged an extra half again on the price, which is considerable when it was a ryokan-style room, so we were on the floor anyway and with three of us, has no space to move. The hotel was hugely expensive for what it offered....

This backpacker hostel has communal showers and z-beds and is generally quite poorly maintained - we were very surprised by the showers, we hadn't experienced this at any of the other hotels we stayed in Japan If that's what you're after, then I suppose it's ok, but you can get a nice modern business hotel with private bathroom in Kyoto...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

“Although the 5th floor is a hike after a long day walking through the sites of Kyoto, 551 has access to a balcony which has a great view over much of the city. A great place to see Kyoto waking up and hear the bells that start ringing at 8 AM.”

“Don't choose the room with beds as you will be in a tiny room. At least the ryokan style rooms have a bit more space when the beds are not down.”
